A Financial Ratio‐Based Predicting Model for Hotel Business Failure
Shan‐,Shan Zhai,Jeong‐,Gil Choi,Francis Kwansa People&Global Business Association 2015 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.20 No.1
The purposes of this study were to find financial ratios that uniquely characterize failed hotel firms, and develop a multiple discriminant model which can predict business failure in the Korean hotel industry. Nine financial ratios that classify 86 hotel firms into failed and non‐failed groups were identified. Of these nine ratios, two, including debt ratio and fixed assets turnover ratio, were extracted and their prediction accuracy in terms of hit ratio was 91.9%. The model suggests that debt‐burdened firms with low fixed asset turnover ratio are more likely to fail. It means that a prudent debt financing policy is necessary to avoid business failure and fixed assets must be used effectively in order to maintain a viable enterprise. Prediction models for business failure are not homogeneous across all countries. Hotel investors and creditors can benefit from the model in screening out failing firms and lowering their investment risk.

The enhancement of oxygen sensitivity of ZnO macropore film by functionalizing with azo pigment
Peng, Liang,Zhai, Jiali,Wang, Dejun,Zhang, Yu,Zhao, Qidong,Wang, Ping,Pang, Shan,Fan, Zhiyong,Xie, Tengfeng Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.6
Azo-ZnO hybrid films were prepared by functionalizing the ZnO macropore films with azo pigment (1,1'-(biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(diazene-2,1-diyl))dinaphthalen-2-ol). Scanning electronic microscopy, current-voltage, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and Kelvin probe were used to characterize these films. The oxygen sensing characteristics of hybrid films and pure ZnO film were measured under the irradiation of UV light. The results show that the sensitivity of hybrid film is about 500 times higher than that of pure ZnO film. The high sensitivity to oxygen of hybrid films is mainly attributed to the increasing of the photo-generated electron concentration. Enhanced photo-induced charge separation after functionalization is confirmed by the pattern of transient photovoltage. Our results demonstrate that the functionalization with azo pigment is a promising approach to enhance the oxygen sensitivity of ZnO under the irradiation of UV light.

With the rapid development of modern technology, more and more electronic equipment had entered people’s life, causing serious electromagnetic pollution. In this study, a lightweight, ultra-thin and high electromagnetic shielding film was fabricated by copper electroless deposition after solution immersion coating method combining chitosan (CTS) and reduced graphene oxide on glass fabric (Cu/RGO-CTS-coated glass fabric). Chitosan and RGO had synergistic effect for copper deposition, enhancing electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding property. The prepared fabric showed superb conductivity of 8589.3 S/cm and the shielding effectiveness of the Cu/RGO-CTS-coated glass fabric showed as high as 93.6 dB at ultra-thin thickness of 92.4 μm (SSE/t = 3868.8 dB cm2 g-1). Thermal conductivity, antibacterial and hydrophobic properties were also studied. Compared with untreated glass fabric, thermal conductivity of Cu/RGO-CTS-coated glass fabric increased by 437%, protecting electronic equipment from adverse effects at high temperature. Cu/RGO-CTS-coated glass fabric had inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, which could prolong the service life and maintain the appearance of the fabric. Cu/RGO-CTS-coated glass fabric also showed hydrophobicity with self-cleaning function, making it possible for the composite material to be used in many fields such as aerospace industry, microelectronic devices, and transportation to resist electromagnetic interference in high humidity and high pollution environment.

Core/shell polymer microspheres containing carboxyl group were prepared by emulsion polymerization, and then the hollow polymer microspheres (PHMs) were formed by infiltration and swelling after alkalisolution post-treatment. Effects of emulsifier types and initial pH of alkali post-treatment on the particlesize distribution and morphology of PHMs emulsion were investigated. Foamed animal skin material(FAS) was obtained by cross-linking and curing the skin collagen materials with PHMs. The resultsshowed that the optimal initial pH was 9, and a stable PHMs emulsion with a maximum average particlesize of 888.5 nm was obtained. The average particle size order of the PHMs emulsions obtained with differentemulsifiers was: sodium stearate (1028.0 nm) > SDBS (823.6 nm) > cetyltrimethylammonium chloride(607.4 nm). The mechanical strength, porosity, and thermal stability of FAS were enhanced by PHMsdispersing and fixing, while its natural permeability and softness were retained. In addition, the whitenessand ultraviolet aging resistance of FAS were improved obviously. The thermal conductivity of FASwas reduced to 0.034 W/(Km), which was in line with the standard of polystyrene foam board for buildingmaterials. In the range of 2000 7000 Hz, the sound transmission loss of FAS reaches 25 40 dB.

Association of XRCC3 Thr241Met Polymorphisms and Gliomas Risk: Evidence from a Meta-analysis
Liang, Hong-Jie,Yan, Yu-Lan,Liu, Zhi-Ming,Chen, Xu,Peng, Qi-Liu,Wang, Jian,Mo, Cui-Ju,Sui, Jing-Zhe,Wu, Jun-Rong,Zhai, Li-Min,Yang, Shi,Li, Tai-Jie,Li, Ruo-Lin,Li, Shan,Qin, Xue Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.7
The relationship between the X-ray repair cross-complementing group 3 (XRCC3) Thr241Met polymorphism and gliomas remains inclusive or controversial. For better understanding of the effect of XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism on glioma risk, a meta-analysis was performed. All eligible studies were identified through a search of PubMed, Elsevier Science Direct, Excerpta Medica Database (Embase) and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) before May 2013. The association between the XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism and gliomas risk was conducted by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). A total of nine case-control studies including 3,533 cases and 4,696 controls were eventually collected. Overall, we found that XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of gliomas (T vs. C: OR=1.10, 95%CI=1.01-1.20, P=0.034; TT vs. CC: OR=1.30, 95%CI=1.03-1.65, P=0.027; TT vs. TC/CC: OR=1.29, 95%CI=1.01-1.64, P=0.039). In the subgroup analysis based on ethnicity, the significant association was found in Asian under four models (T vs. C: OR=1.17, 95%CI=1.07-1.28, P=0.00; TT vs. CC: OR=1.79, 95%CI=1.36-2.36, P=0.00; TT vs. TC/CC: OR=1.75, 95%CI=1.32-2.32, P=0.00; TT/TC vs. CC: OR=1.11,95% CI=1.02-1.20). This meta-analysis suggested that the XRCC3 Thr241Met polymorphism is a risk factor for gliomas, especially for Asians. Considering the limited sample size and ethnicities included in the meta-analysis, further large scale and well-designed studies are needed to confirm our results.
