A Research on Methods for English Native-Speakers’ Teaching in Korean EFL Classes

        Seungbin Roh 한국영어어문교육학회 2006 영어어문교육 Vol.12 No.3

This research conducted between March and December of 2005 has focused on analyzing a diverse range of educational services provided by English native-speaking instructors teaching in Korea. This study includes quantitative research findings from 238 university students. This dual-semester research study focuses on our most recent Korean EFL(English as a Foreign Language) programs provided for university students who wish to improve their English ability. Many students hope to partake in lectures taught by Native English Speaking teachers(hereafter NS teachers), and many universities are also willing to open additional courses for these students. However, in order for lectures to be most effective, NS instructors need to be appropriately trained or qualified teachers in order to successfully educate their students. Furthermore, NS teachers need to constantly review their teaching styles and strategies to allow for professional development and to ensure an improvement in their teaching methodology. Overall, this research provides whole English lecture views of NS teachers that is data-driven regarding designing, implementing, evaluating, and reforming the education of English taught by NS teachers working in Korea.

      • Feasibility Study of Synthesizing Graphene Quantum Dots From the Spent Resin in a Nuclear Power Plant

        Seungbin Yoon,Woo Nyun Choi,Jaehoon Byun,Hee Reyoung Kim 한국방사성폐기물학회 2022 한국방사성폐기물학회 학술논문요약집 Vol.20 No.1

The feasibility study of synthesizing graphene quantum dots from spent resin, which is used in nuclear power plants to purify the liquid radioactive waste, was conducted. Owing to radiation safety and regulatory issues, an uncontaminated ion-exchange resin, IRN150 H/OH, prior to its use in a nuclear power plant, was used as the material of experiment on synthesis of graphene quantum dots. Since the major radionuclides in spent resin are treated by thermal decomposition, prior to conducting the experiment, carbonization of ion-exchange resin was performed. The experiment on synthesis of graphene quantum dots was conducted according to the general hydrothermal/solvothermal synthesis method as follows. The carbonized ion-exchange resin was added to a solution, which is a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid in ratio of 3:1, and graphene quantum dots were synthesized at 115°C for 48 hours. After synthesizing, procedure, such as purifying, filtering, evaporating were conducted to remove residual acid from the graphene quantum dots. After freeze-drying which is the last procedure, the graphene quantum dots were obtained. The obtained graphene quantum dots were characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The AFM image demonstrates the topographic morphology of obtained graphene quantum dots, the heights of which range from 0.4 to 3 nm, corresponding to 1–4 graphene layers, and the step height is approximately 2–2.5 nm. Using FT-IR, the functional groups in obtained graphene quantum dots were detected. The stretching vibrations of hydroxyl group at 3,420 cm?1, carboxylic acid (C=O) at 1,751 cm?1, C-OH at 1,445 cm?1, and C-O at 1,054 cm?1. The identified functional groups of obtained graphene quantum dots matched the functional groups which are present if it is a graphene quantum dot. In Raman spectrum, the D and G peaks, which are the characteristics of graphene quantum dots, were detected at wavenumbers of 1,380 cm?1 and 1,580 cm?1, respectively. Thus, it was verified that the graphene quantum dots could be successfully synthesized from the ionexchange resin.

Mobile Phone-based Real-time Dangerous Object Recognition for the Visually Impaired

        Seungbin Kim,Hartono Rodi,Tshibang Patrick A Kalend,Namkyun Baik,Kyoo Jae Shin 대한전자공학회 2023 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.12 No.2

This paper proposes a dangerous object recognition Android application for the visually impaired using a smartphone. Among the one-stage and two-stage detectors, which are representative object recognition methods, the one-stage method is more suitable for real-time object recognition. Among them, more accurate object recognition is possible using the SSD network. In addition, the visually impaired cannot see the screen or the front properly in their daily life, so it informs them of dangerous situations in advance through sound. The system helps the visually impaired using a priority queue that notifies the visually impaired with a different sound according to a high-priority object. The experiment results of the proposed system are expected to bring positive results when applied to the smartphones of visually impaired people.

Research on Comparing the Recognition of English Education and Policy of College Students of Three Eastern Asian Countries

        Seungbin Roh 한국영어어문교육학회 2014 영어어문교육 Vol.20 No.1

This study investigates how East Asian college students in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan respectively recognize their own country's English education and related policies. This study then analyzes the differences in responses of students from the three different countries by comparing and contrasting. In Asia, the value of the English language has become higher and more dominant than any other period in history. As a result, many Asian countries are not only investing a lot of their budget to support these nations to learn English but also to establish various English educational policies. 156 college students have been randomly selected and have voluntarily taken part in this research. The research used a questionnaire that included 10 questions regarding English education and policy. The results revealed that according to students' nationalities, there are obvious differences in how students recognize English education and policy. In contrast to Japanese and Taiwanese students, Korean students predominantly agreed on the most sustainable 4 items and rejected 4 others among 10 questions. Japanese students concurred to 4 of the items while Taiwanese students reject 6 items. Based on the results, Korean college students are more stressed due to English becoming more prevalent in Korean culture, economic, and education, etc., than students from the other two countries.

Antibody-mediated oral delivery of therapeutic DNA for type 2 diabetes mellitus

        Seungbin Cha,Sun Hwa Lee,Sung Hun Kang,Mohammad Nazmul Hasan,김영준,조성필,Yong-kyu Lee 한국생체재료학회 2018 생체재료학회지 Vol.22 No.3

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic progressive metabolic disease that involves uncontrolled elevation of blood glucose levels. Among various therapeutic approaches, GLP-1 prevents type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients from experiencing hyperglycemic episodes. However, the short half-life (< 5 min) and rapid clearance of GLP-1 often limits its therapeutic use. Here, we developed an oral GLP-1 gene delivery system to achieve an extended antidiabetic effect. Methods: Human IgG1 (hIgG1)-Fc-Arg/pDNA complexes were prepared by an electrostatic complexation of the expression plasmid with various ratios of the positively modified Fc fragments of an antibody (hIgG1-Fc-Arg) having a targeting ability to FcRn receptor. The shape and size of the complexes were examined by atomic force and field emission electron microscope. The stability of the complexes was tested in simulated gastrointestinal pH and physiological serum condition. Cellular uptake, transport, and toxicity of the complexes were tested in the Caco-2 cells. Biodistribution and antidiabetic effect of the complexes were observed in either Balb/c mice or Lepdb/db mice. Results: A 50/1 ratio of the hIgG1-Fc-Arg/pDNA produced a complex structure having approximately 40 ~ 60 nm size and also demonstrated protection of pDNA in the complex from the physiological pH and serum conditions. Cellular uptake and transport of the complex were demonstrated in Caco-2 cells having FcRn receptor expression and forming the monolayer-polarized structure. The cellular toxicity of both delivery vehicle and the complex revealed their minimal toxicity comparable with nontoxicity of a commercial transfection reagent. Biodistribution of the complex showed the detectable distribution of the complex in the most parts of gastrointestinal tract due to ubiquitous expression of the FcRn receptors. An in vivo type 2 diabetes treatment study of oral administration of hIgG1-Fc-9Arg/pGLP-1 complexes showed absorption and expression in GI tract of either Balb/c mice or Lepdb/db mice. Conclusion: In this study, we developed an oral GLP-1 gene delivery system on the platform of cationic hIgG1-Fc-9Arg. Prolonged t1/2, less immunoactivity, and better bioactivities of hIgG-Fc-9Arg/pGLP-1 complexes appeared to be a promising approach to achieve potent treatment of type 2 diabetes treatment.
