Imperial Topography in C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet

        ( Seongeun Jin ) 한국근대영미소설학회 2018 근대 영미소설 Vol.25 No.2

        C. S. Lewis’s travel narrative, in general, seems to compose his theological perspective of the world reflecting the probability of restoring lost faith. Nonetheless, underneath the context, the complex anxiety of the declining British Empire is intermingled throughout the narrative. Applied to Mary Louise Pratt’s term “contact zone,” in the essay, C. S. Lewis’s Out of the Silent Planet (1938) examines the moral dilemma of emancipating the colonies and, at the same time, re-empowering the Empire. More specifically, underneath the fantasy narrative in Out of the Silent Planet, Lewis’s story prevails to the ambiguous aspects of imperial history in England. The story is influenced by the tradition of English knights who protect the weak, as we can see in the literary tradition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. A white male protagonist displays knightly values as compared to Victorian gentlemen who hunt, cultivate languages and education, and are warriors. Thus, the main protagonist’s reactions to violence in Out of the Silent Planet display a somewhat ambivalent imperialist attitude because of a national narrative in terms of reflecting the nostalgic values of declining empires.

However, the effects of retinol as a pretreatment are unknown. Thus, this study evaluates the effects of retinol as a pretreatment for skin improvement. Methods: Middle-aged women were recruited as participants in this study and were divided into four groups, namely, without retinol pretreatment (G1), retinol pretreatment for 4 weeks (G2), 8 weeks (G3), and 12 weeks (G4). The test was conducted 15 times. Before peeling, participants in the G1, G3, and G4 groups were pretreated with retinol cream on their skin for the indicated time periods, whereas those in G1 did not receive the pretreatment. Skin erythema index, moisture content, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and roughness were measured before the experiment, on the peeling day, and 1 and 2 weeks after peeling. Results: Significant differences in the skin erythema index, moisture content, TEWL, and roughness were found between the pretreated and non-pretreated groups. The pretreated groups experienced higher moisture content, lesser erythema, lower TEWL, and lesser roughness than the non-treated group. In addition, G4 had a larger improvement than G3, and G3 had a larger improvement than G2. Conclusion: The results showed that long-term use of retinol is effective in relieving erythema, dehydration, and skin irritation.

A Study on Military Makeup Design With Camouflage Characteristics during CRISIS

        Seongeun Park,Jungsoon Choi J-INSTITUTE 2021 International Journal of Crisis & Safety Vol.6 No.2

Purpose: Since the beginning of times, humans have had to deal with food, clothing, and shelter. As they evolved and progressed, they did not have any medium of protection when dangers emerged from the environment, like animals. The origins of the army, was as a group of humans who had to protect themselves. Camouflage started when humans had to protect themselves from other humans, rather than animals or external factors, so they needed an additional protection apart from weapons. Method: This study concluded that military camouflage pattern characteristics were concealment, display, and distortion, respectively. Based on these features, camouflage makeup patterns were conceived. Concealment is hiding in order to permeate terrain in a war; showiness is a means of showing one’s rank or situation by means of a military uniform; and distortion is similar showing a distorted appearance by concealing it. Results: Based on Camouflage Art, which shows us as if we re one in our surroundings.Using the camouflage characteristics of the military look, three works were made with makeup, symbolic colors were added to make each characteristic visible, and objects were used to express them. Conclusion: This work is a research on makeup patterns that use protective media such as camouflage in crisis. It is believed that this study can have a good influence not only in the industrial application of beauty but also in the military and fashion circles.

Flannery O’Connor’s Racial Grotesqueness and Metaphorical Black Codes in “The Artificial Nigger” and “Judgment Day”

        Seongeun Jin(진성은) 한국영미문학교육학회 2018 영미문학교육 Vol.22 No.2

This paper examines the American geographical descriptions of racism and a long history of racial separations in Flannery O’Connor’s “The Artificial Nigger” (1955) and “Judgment Day” (1965). O’Connor’s writing displays ambiguity between restoring the white’s lost comfort zone and acknowledging the rebellious changes in modern society. Whites lost status because in the American South African-American people and foreigners began to substitute for whites’ in professional roles in the mid-twentieth century. O’Connor’s white characters psychologically reside in the glorious world of the past. The American South has a special background due to the defeatism since the Civil War. In the paper, I argue that O’Connor’s stories show the social changes regardless of her complex views of mystery and religion. In addition, she to some degree rebels against the reader’s expectation of equilibrium by shaking the conventional Southern structure and unveiling a reality of the upcoming Civil Rights movement regarding racial equality.

Synthesis of Silver Nanowire Arrays by Thermal Decomposition of Silver Acetate

        Seongeun Lee,오한준,이준희,이오연,지충수,정용수 대한금속·재료학회 2009 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.15 No.4

Rapid progress in nanotechnology has made it increasingly easier to nanostructure metal materials. This paper describes the formation of uniform silver nanowires by reducing silver acetate with PLLA polymer. The silver nanowires were prepared by wetting a porous template at 350 °C using 1.5 wt.% CH2Cl2 solution containing PLLA/silver acetate in a ratio of 1:1. A thermal analysis in the temperature range of 100 °C to 400 °C was carried out by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). An exothermic reaction peak associated with pure silver occurred at 352 °C at a heating rate of 5 °C/min. From the attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectra analysis of the silver and PLLA composites, it was obtained that the absorption peak of the PLLA became weak by heating to successively higher temperatures in the range of 230 °C to 350 °C. The DSC and ATR results showed that the PLLA can be directly and easily removed at 350 °C, leaving the pure metal inside the pores. The silver nanowires consisted of nanoparticles whose average diameter was about 26.5 nm. And those nanowires with an aspect ratio of about 13 showed an UV-vis absorption peak, which is attributed to the surface plasmon excitation at 350 nm and 377 nm. Transatlantic Connections and the Gothic Imagination in Louisa May Alcott’s Flower Fables

        ( Seongeun Jin ) 한국근대영미소설학회 2019 근대 영미소설 Vol.26 No.3

On the surface, Louisa May Alcott reinforces strict morals for women in the Victorian period. However, Alcott wrote well-known sentimental stories such as Little Women (1879) and Jo’s Boys (1886) to earn money for her impoverished family. Thus, she did not value them much herself, calling them “moral pap” or baby food. Although her sentimental stories garnered popular and critical attention, her gothic thrillers have not been fully studied. Her body of gothic stories has been overlooked primarily because a number of the tales were unknown. This study of Alcott’s gothic works attempts to remedy that gap. It also focuses upon the gothic theory embraced by the author and on the transatlantic connections that appear in the stories. In the paper, I will specifically demonstrate how Alcott’s Flower Fables (1854) incorporates her concern about the sphere of American influence within the seemingly scriptural and mythical images, and further, how this motif is developed in her other gothic stories.

Effects of Various Solution Wetting Conditions on the Morphology and the Crystallization of Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Nanotubes

Seongeun Lee,Byunggwan Lee,Jinwook Choi,정용수,오한준,지충수 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.54 No.3

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanotubes were fabricated by using solution wetting methods with nanoscale AAO templates whose pore diameters were about 90 nm and 190 nm when prepared by anodizing in oxalic-/and phosphoric-acid solutions, respectively. Wetting of the AAO template was done under two conditions of heat treatments, annealing at 200℃ and then cooling to 130℃ and annealing for 1 h at 130℃ after having been kept at room temperatures. The synthesis of nanowires and nantubes was particularly affected by the annealing condition. The attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy result suggested that the PVDF nanotubes crystallized exclusively in the α form while the nanowires formed in a mixture of α and γ phases. These results indicate that the morphology and the crystallization of the PVDF nanostructures are affected by the annealing time and temperature and by the solution wetting conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns with a relatively high intensity at the (020) plane showed that a texture is induced in α-PVDF nanotubes when a wetting solution of 10 wt% PVDF in DMF is used.
