        Objective: We describe various clinical presentations of female urethral meatal stricture, which may mimic other pelvic floor disorders and result in diagnostic delay. Diagnosis, management, and outcome results are reported Materials and Methods: We reviewed retrospectively 26 consecutive cases of female urethral meatal stricture. Patient characteristics, history, clinical presentation, symptom score, maximal flow rate, residual urine, diagnosis, management and short-term follow up are reported. Results: Mean patient age plus or minus standard deviation was 54 years. Most 21 (81%) cases were referred as diagnostic dilemmas with symptoms present for 1 month to 30 years. Mean interval between onset of symptoms to diagnosis was 5.8 years. The most common symptoms were residual urine sensation (77% of cases), frequency (54%), pelvic pain (46%), dysuria (46%), weak stream urine (27%), urgency (15%) and 17 patients (65%) have combined symptoms. 16 patients (62%) had been treated with oral and/or vaginal medication and/or psychotherapy. The female urethral meatal stricture was visible on physical examination in 21 patients (81%) and cystoscopy in 5 patients (19%). Of these visible urethral meatal stricture, 11 patients (45%) contained recurrent urinary tract infection, 9 patients (35%) contained urethral mucosal prolapse, 7 patients (27%) contained urethral diverticulum, and 3 patients (12%) contained stress urinary incontinence. 18 patients (69%) who has been treated with oral and/or vaginal medication or psychotherapy was not successfully improved. Treatment consist of urethral meatal excision and/or everted urethral mucosal excision and/or urethral diverticulum excision and/or anti-incontinence surgery when indicated. Subsequently 24 patients (92%) had improved symptom score, but 2 patient was not changed. In 9 patients new symptom developed. Conclusions: Female urethral meatal stricture have several urinary symptoms and may mimic other pelvic floor disorders. This condition should be considered in women with frequency, residual urine sensation, pelvic pain, dysuria and etc. Medical treatment is not sufficient but surgical treatment is usually simple, safe and effective in alleviation associated symptoms.

      • The Nature of Scientific Methods and its Implication for Inquiry Activities in Science Classrooms

        In this article, the nature of scientific methods was examined in terms of four methodological aspects of science, including getting data, discovering a law, inventing a theory, and predicting and testing. The investigation revealed that although the inductive and deductive logics played some roles in the course of scientific inquiry, the abductive method was employed in the process of discovering a law and inventing a theory. Based on this, it was suggested as an implication for science education that the abductive method should be used as a model for organizing student inquiry activities in science classrooms.

        Superconducting MgB2 Wire Drawing Considering Anisotropic Hardening Behavior and Hydrostatic Effect

        Numerical modeling was conducted to investigate the deformation behavior of powder mixture during multi-pass drawingprocesses for multi-filamentary MgB2wire. A modified Drucker-Prager Cap (DPC) model with an elliptical cap surface usingthe new material characterization method was developed to capture the anisotropic hardening behavior and hydrostatic effectof the powder mixture. A number of uniaxial die compaction, cold isostatic pressing, diametrical compression, and uniaxialcompression tests were conducted using different powder densities to characterize the modified DPC model. A commercialfinite element software ABAQUS with a user subroutine was used to simulate the drawing of the MgB2wire. The densityand area fraction of the powder mixture during the wire-drawing process were verified with experimental results. The differencein packing density at the inner and outer filaments of the MgB2wire was successfully captured by simulation. Inaddition, the effect of the initial packing density on the superconducting properties of MgB2wire was numerically studied. It is shown that the increase in the superconducting area, which results from a high initial packing density, should be moreeffective compared to the increase in the grain connectivity in enhancing the critical current properties for the MgB2wirewhen the final packing density is saturated after a number of drawing processes.

        한일병합 100년, 한국문학의 식민성과 탈식민성 ; 1920년대 인도 시인의 유입과 탈식민성의 모색

        근대시의 발전 경로에서 인도 시인의 영향은 이중적이다. 첫째는 인도에 대한 조선의 관심이 주로 서양을 매개로 한다는 점이다. 간디, 타고르, 나이두, 네루 등은 모두 서양이 주목한 정치인(혹은 종교인), 시인이라는 공통점을 갖는다. 그들은 서양에 의해서 인정받은 동양인이다. 여기에는 서구적 근대성의 시선이 작동하고 있다. 둘째는 인도의 저명인사들이 대개 ``반근대``, ``반문명``의 태도를 취한다는 점이다. 그들은 서구적 근대성의 시선에서 자유로우며, 서구문명과 서구적 근대를 부정하는 근거로 ``동양``을 제시하고 있다. 그들은 동양인의 자존심을 회복시켜주고 있다. 하지만 ``동양 담론``은 일본의 식민지 이데올로기 중의 하나이다. 동양의 동일성은 한일병합의 근거로 작용한 바 있다. 인도에서 ``동양 담론``은 ``탈근대`` ``탈문명``을 통해서 ``탈식민화``의 가능성을 내포하지만, 조선에서 ``동양 담론``은 근대문명의 동양적 결정판인 ``일본의 식민지 이데올로기``에 깊이 감염되어 있다. 동양 담론이 (서구적) 근대화의 이데올로기와 충돌하지 않았던 것이다. 하지만 1920년대 인도 시인의 영향은 달랐다. 그들이 서구적 근대화에 대한 반성의 계기를 마련해주고 있기 때문이다. 그 흔적은 타고르의 영역판 시집을 둘러싼 번역 문제에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 타고르의 시집 번역에서 가장 큰 문제는 해당 시집의 ``종교성``을 부각시키는 문제였다. 특히 『기탄잘리』의 영역판에 등장하는 ``thou``의 번역이 문제였다. 오천석은 ``thou``를 ``님/그대``로 번역하여 종교적 성격보다 연애시의 성격을 강조하였는데, 김억은 그것을 철저하게 ``you``와 구별하면서 ``주님/하느님``으로 번역하여 종교성의 의미를 살리고자 했다. 하지만 타고르의 대표 시집 3권을 완역한 이후 김억은 ``thou``와 ``you``의 동일성을 ``동양적 특성``으로 강조하게 된다. 오천석의 번역어인 ``님/그대``에 자신의 번역어인 ``주님/하느님``의 뜻이 포함될 수 있다는 것이다. 한용운의 지적처럼 ``님``은 연인에서 국가, 부처까지 무한 확장이 가능한 개념이 된 것이다. ``님``을 매개로 해서, 문학과 종교(초월)의 통일성, 님과의 합일을 통한 주체의 소멸 등의 동양적 성격이 오히려 근대적 ``서정시``의 성격으로 자리잡게 된다. 이른바 ``전통 서정시``의 기본적인 모델이 완성된 것이다. 이것은 서구적 노블의 정착을 목적으로 하는 근대 소설의 발전 경로와 다른 점이다. 또한 조선에도 ``님의 상실-회복``의 서사가 정착하게 되고, 조선(=님)의 르네상스를 이데올로기로 정립하게 된다. 근대를 기점으로 이전과 이후가 서로 결합하는 사고가 정착된 것이다. ``근대 이전``이 ``근대 이후``의 가능성을 모색하게 하는 낡은 창고로서 주목받게 된 것이다. 30년대의 ``신라``의 재발견은 그 일부에 해당한다. Indian poets such as Gandhi, Tagore, Naidu, Nehru and more influenced in the development of modern Korean poetry in two contradictory ways. First of all, Koreans were initially interested in the above mentioned poets in that they were most admired in the West. It is obvious that Koreans were strongly conscious that these political (or religious) poets were the Orientals recognized and praised by Westerns. In a certain way, it is implied that Koreans highly regarded Western perspective and modernity. On the other hand, it is noticeable that most of the eminent figures in India were against modernization and civilization. Not only did they reject to be confined to Western modernity but also unreservedly pictured the East in opposition to Western civilization and modernization. They indeed regained self-esteem and respect as Orientals. Nonetheless, it cannot be ignored that discourse on the Orient was central to Japanese imperialism and colonial ideologies. In fact, the Japanese colonization of Korea was once justified in the name of the Oriental identity. While discourse on the Orient in India suggested the possibilities of post-colonization with post-modernization and post-civilization, the discourse in Korea was deeply imbued with Japanese colonial ideologies which were regarded as the Oriental representative of modern civilization. In other words, discourse on the Orient in Korea was not incompatible with the ideologies of Western modernization. However, under the influence of Indian poets in the 1920s, Koreans were challenged to reconsider Western modernization. A controversy over translating Tagore`s poems in English into Korean was exemplary in case. What was at issue in translating Tagore`s poetry was its religious implication. Especially, how to translate ``thou`` in the English version of 『Gitanjali』 into Korean was debated. Oh Cheonseok translated ``thou`` as ``you`` indicating a lover. In doing so, the poem was more likely to be romantic than religious. In contrast, Kim Uk distinguishably understood it as ``God/Lord/Jesus`` to underline the religious implication of the poem. However, after translating all three volumes of Tagore`s poems, Kim stressed that characteristically there was no difference between ``thou`` and ``you`` in terms of an Oriental sensibility. He thus argued that Oh`s word ``you`` was equivalent to his word ``God/Lord/Jesus`` as Han Youngun`s ``Nim(you)`` was variously conceptualized as a lover, nation, Buddha, and more. From the concept of ``Nim,`` rather, Oriental characteristics such as the unity of literature and religion and the deconstruction of poetic subject into oneness with ``Nim`` have been distinguished as those of modern poetry. This is to say that the elementary model of ``traditional`` lyric poetry came to be complete. Also, it is what differs the development of modern Korean poems from that of modern Korean novels which aimed at the settlement of Western novels` style. Moreover, the narrative on ``the loss and recovery of Nim`` took root in Korea, and the Renaissance of the nation identified with Nim was established as ideology. Since the modern era, a notion to incorporate ``before the era`` and ``after the era`` has been diffused in a great degree. ``Before the modern era`` (pre-modernity) was much studied as ``an original storage`` to appreciate the potentials of ``after the modern era``(post-modernity). In the end, it partly resulted in the rediscovery of ``Shilla`` in the 1930s.

      • 생약제제인 이공산(異功散)의 Cisplatin 유도 신장독성 보호 및 항산화 효과

Preventive and Antioxidative Effects of Crude Drug Preparation(E-kong-san) on Cisplatin Induced Nephrotoxicity. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 201-211, 1999. -Nephroprotective effects of a crude drug-prearation (E-kong-san) were determined from cisplatin on rabbit kidney proximal tubule and human renal cortical cells by MTT assays and sustained glucose consumption on ciplatin-induced human renal cortical tissue. Levels of creatinine and blood ure nitrogen(BUN) in serum after administration of cisplatin(0.75mg/kg,i.p.) to E-kong-san(0.75g/kg/day,p.o.)-pretreated rats were markedly lower compared to those of cisplatin-treated rats. Moreover, the administration of E-kong-san significantly inhibited the loss of body weight of cisplatin injected rts. These findings suggest that E-kong-san on the cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity led us to investigate whether the effect of this water extract was a result of anti-oxidation. E-kong-san showed strong free radical scavenger activities on 1,1-dipheny1-2picrylhydrazil(DPPH) radical and xanthine/xanthine oxidase(XOD) generated superoxide anion radical(O2-). We further studied the effects of E-kong-san on lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes induced by enzymatic and nonenzymatic methods. E-kong-san exhibited significant inhibition on both ascorbic acid/Fe2+and ADP/NADPH/Fe3+ induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes. Based on these results, we suggest that-E-kong-san attenuate the cisplatin induced cytotoxicity and its mechanism can be eplained by antioxidant.

      • Species and habitat-dependent accumulation and biomagnification of brominated flame retardants and PBDE metabolites

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The occurrence, species- and habitat-dependent distribution of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and PBDE metabolites comprising 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 3 hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), 17 methoxylated (MeO-) BDEs, and 8 hydroxylated (OH-) BDEs were determined in marine environments (sediment and seawater) and 20 biota species in food web in the southern part of Korea. The concentration of HBCDs was statistically higher in both pelagic (5.73–60.1 ng/g lipid weight [lw]) and demersal fish (2.45–31.3 ng/g lw), whereas a higher level of OH-BDEs was observed in benthic invertebrates (2.48–40.7 ng/g lw), suggesting different composition of BFRs and PBDE metabolites between species. The concentrations of TBBPA and MeO-BDEs were significantly higher in pelagic fish (1.31–11.3, 6.15–61.5 ng/g lw) than in demersal fish (not detected [N.D.]–4.45, 0.956–8.52 ng/g lw) and benthic invertebrates (N.D.–8.11, 0.182–4.65 ng/g lw), reflecting a dependence on habitat. Additionally, analogue distribution of PBDEs in pelagic fish was similar to that in seawater, whereas the distribution in demersal fish and benthic invertebrates was similar to the distribution in sediment. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) and trophic magnification factor (TMF) of α-HBCD, some of PBDEs, and 6-MeO-BDE47 were up to 5000 and 1, respectively, suggesting strong bioaccumulation and biomagnification.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Different distributions of BFRs and PBDE metabolites were observed according to the species and habitat of biota. </LI> <LI> The level of HBCDs was higher in pelagic and demersal fish, whereas OH-BDE level was higher in benthic invertebrates. </LI> <LI> The concentrations of MeO-BDEs and TBBPA in pelagic fish were higher than those in demersal fish and benthic invertebrates. </LI> <LI> α-HBCD, some congeners of PBDEs (BDE49, 71, 100), and 6-MeO-BDE47 were strongly biomagnified and bioaccumulated. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • 간세포암과 감별이 어려웠던 악성중피종 치험 1예

        Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm that arises from the mesothelium of a serosal cavity and is a rapidly fatal disease with a median survival of 4 to 12 months for untreated cases. Recently, we experienced a case with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma who was suspected hepatocelluar carcioma by abdominal CT scan and was confirmed by biopsy including immunohistochemical stain(calretinin) after surgery. We performed tumor excisions and wedge resection of the liver(segment Ⅷ)and inserted Tencoff catheter in abdominal cavity at 25th day of post-operation. We treated with intraperitoneal paclitaxel(25mg/m^(2)/day for 5 days) six courses monthly. She was well tolerable and is still living without any evidence of recurrence for 14th month of post-operation.

      • PBDEs and their structural analogues in marine environments: Fate and expected formation mechanisms compared with diverse environments

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The concentrations and relative distributions of 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and 17 methoxylated (MeO-) and 8 hydroxylated (OH-) BDEs were determined in marine environments including sediments, bivalves, and seawater along the southern coast of South Korea to understand their fates and possible formation mechanisms. The relative and substituent distributions of the PBDEs and their structural analogues varied according to the characteristics of the media. PBDEs were dominant in marine sediments and seawater, whereas MeO-BDEs made the highest contributions in bivalves. Similar patterns were previously identified in inland environments in Korea, except in river water where OH-BDEs were dominant. The natural formation of structural analogues might be the main mechanism in marine, as <I>ortho</I>-substituted naturally occurring MeO- and OH-BDEs were dominant in all media and seemed to be more produced than in inland environments. In addition, the higher concentrations of meta-substituted MeO-BDEs nearshore than offshore was observed. This is the first study comparing marine (near- and offshore) and inland to understand the differences in their fate and possible formation mechanisms in each environmental conditions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The distributions of PBDEs and their structural analogues were compared between marine (near- and offshore) and inland. </LI> <LI> PBDEs dominated in abiotic media, whereas MeO-BDEs were dominant in biota. </LI> <LI> Natural formation might be the main mechanism for PBDE structural analogues in marine and was highly occurred than in inland. </LI> <LI> The higher contributions of meta-MeO-BDEs were observed in inland and nearshore than offshore. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • 工具磨耗에 따른 切削力의 動特性에 대한 硏究

        In recent year, owing to the automization of cutting tools, in-process dectction is more and more important. It is necessary to find how to estimate the tool wear because of problem about precision. Most of studies on in-process detection of tool wear have been carried out by prediction of tool life and measurement of force, heat, vibration, AE(acoustic emission) and image processing in cutting. In this paper, we deal with the relations of tool wear by variations in dynamic cutting force and then derived to correlate the wear with the dynamic component cutting force in the machining SUS304 which is welknown as difficult -to-machine material. The results obtained are as follows 1. At the view point of machinability for tool wear, even in case of same uncutchip cross-sectional area, to makes the slenderness ratio higher is advantageous. 2. The characteristics of RMS in cutting forces is correlated the wear and characterized by the tool life. It is suggested that applying the RMS to in-line process is a effective methods for detecting the tool wear.

      • Rat의 포유조절에 따른 난소와 유선의 조직학적 성상

        This experiment was conducted to investigate how the lactation regulation such as restricted-lactation, early weaning during the suckling period influences on ovarian functions in primiparous rats, on the bases of change in histological characteristics of ovary and mammary gland. 1. The ovaries of rats in middle lactation stage maintained the functional corpora lutea full of cytoplasm, and those of rats in late lactation stage contained matured ovarian follicles. 2. The milk was found full in the mammary gland tissue of NL rats, but short in the tissue of RL rats, and all the alveolar tissues were degraded in mammary gland of weaned rats. The alveoli structures of mammary gland of NL rats were uniformed on Day 10, but such uniformity was lost greatly on Day 20.
