Producing Localities and Nationhood in a Globalizing Southeast Asian City

This essay discusses social imaginaries and their associated anxieties and varying scales and provenances that overlap and intersect at the site of the “local.” Based on a long-term fieldwork at an urban poor Hindu-Indian “squatter” settlement situated on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), how local survival strategies have morphed alongside the stabilizing imperatives of nation-hood formation are examined. In the case of Malaysia, this has involved perpetuating the colonial categories of “race” and “religion” in tandem with appropriating the newer constructs of “globalization” and the drive to remake Kuala Lumpur into a “World Class City.”
Mathematical Problem Solving for Everyone: A Design Experiment

An impetus for reviving research in mathematical problem solving is the recent advance in methodological thinking, namely, the design experiment ([Gorard, S. (2004). Combining methods in educational research. Maidenhead, England: Open University Press.]; [Schoenfeld, A. H. (2009). Bridging the cultures of educational research and design. Educational Designer. 1(2). http://www.educationaldesigner.org/ed/volume1/issue2/]). This methodological approach supports a "re-design" of contextual elements to fulfil the overarching objective of making mathematical problem solving available to all students of mathematics. In problem solving, components critical to successful design in one setting that may be adapted to suit another setting include curriculum design, assessment strategy, teacher capacity, and instructional resources. In this paper, we describe the implementation, over three years, of a problem solving module into the main mathematics curriculum of an Integrated Programme school in Singapore which had sufficient autonomy to tailor-fit curriculum to their students.
Teachers Solving Mathematics Problems : Lessons from their Learning Journeys

This paper reports on the learning journeys in mathematical problem solving of 21 teachers enrolled on a Masters of Education course entitled Discrete Mathematics and Problem Solving. It draws from the reports written by these teachers on their personal journeys: the commonalities and differences among them in terms of how they look at their own problem solving experiences, what language they employ in talking about problem solving, and what impact the course has on their views about problem solving. One particular aspect of problem solving instruction, a pedagogical innovation called the Practical Worksheet, is addressed in some detail. These graduate students are full-time mathematics teachers with at least two years of classroom experience. They include primary and secondary teachers.

Previous studies indicated that students tended to hold less satisfactory beliefs about the discipline of mathematics, beliefs about themselves as learners of mathematics, and beliefsabout mathematics teaching and learning. However, only a few studies had developed curricular interventions to change students`` beliefs. This study aimed to examine the effect of a problem-solving curriculum (i.e., Mathematical Problem Solving for Everyone, MProSE) on Singaporean Grade 7 students`` beliefs about mathematical problemsolving (MPS). Four classes (n =142) were engaged in ten lessons with each comprising four stages: understand the problem, devise a plan, carry out the plan, and look back. Heuristics and metacognitive control were emphasized during students`` problem solving activities. Results indicated that the MProSE curriculum enabled some students to develop more satisfactory beliefs about MPS. Further path analysis showed that students`` attitudes towards the MProSE curriculum are important predictors for their beliefs.

Hexakis(oxy-4-benzaldehyde)cyclotriphosphazene, 1 was successfully synthesised by nucleophilic substitution reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene, HCCP and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Azotization reaction of p-nitroaniline with phenol formed 4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenol, 2 which was alkykated with heptyl, nonyl, decyl, dodecyl and tetradecylbromide to give a series of nitro compounds, 3a-e. Reduction of 3a-e and 2 formed the subsequent amine compounds 4a-f, 4-(4- alkyloxyphenylazo)phenylamine. Another similar reaction of protected aniline with a series of substituted aniline formed a series of compounds 4g-i. A series of hexasubstituted cyclotriphosphazene molecules containing Schiff base and azo linking units, 5a-i were synthesised from the reaction between intermediates 1 and 4a-i. Further reduction of compound 5i afford compound 5j with amino terminal end. All the synthesised intermediates and compounds were characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and CHN elemental analysis. The liquid crystal properties of intermediates and final compounds were determined using Polarised Optical Microscope (POM) and their phase transitions confirmed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Only intermediates 3a-e showed mesophase of smectic A and compounds 5a-e with alkoxy chain were mesogenic with smectic A and nematic phases. In addition, compound 5h exhibited nematic phase only. However, all the other intermediates and compounds were found to be non-mesogenic. Furthermore, the fire retardant of final compounds were determined using Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) testing. The LOI value of pure polyester resin was increased from 22.53 to 24.71% when incorporated with 1 wt% of HCCP. Moreover, all the final compounds showed a positive in LOI value the highest LOI value was belonged to compound 5i with 27.90%.
Impact of Copper Densities of Substrate Layers on the Warpage of IC Packages

In this paper, the impact of the copper densities of substrate layers on IC package warpage is studied experimentally and numerically. The substrate strips used in this study contained two metal layers, with the metal densities and patterns of these two layers varied to determine their impacts. Eight legs of substrate strips were prepared. Leg 1 to leg 5 were prepared with a HD (high density) type of strip and leg 6 to leg 8 were prepared with UHD (ultra high density) type of strip. The top copper metal layer was designed to feature meshed patterns and the bottom copper layer was designed to feature circular patterns. In order to consider the process factors, the warpage of the substrate bottom was measured step by step with the following manufacturing process: (a) bare substrate, (b) die attach, (c) applying mold compound (d) and post reflow. Furthermore, after the post reflow step, the substrate strips were diced to obtain unit packages and the warpage of the unit packages was measured to check the warpage trends and differences. The experimental results showed that the warpage trend is related to the copper densities. In addition to the experiments, a Finite Element Modeling (FEM) was used to simulate the warpage. The nonlinear material properties of mold compound, die attach, solder mask, and substrate core were included in the simulation. Through experiment and simulation, some observations were concluded.
Relooking "Look Back": A student`s Attempt at Problem Solving using Polya`s Model

Against the backdrop of half a century of research in mathematics problem solving, Polya`s last stage is especially conspicuous-by the scarcity of research on it! Much of the research focused on the first three stages (e.g., Francisco & Maher 2005; Taylor & Mcdonald, 2007), with little or no successful attempts at following through with the subjects. In this paper, we describe a case study of how the innovation of a "Practical Worksheet" within a new paradigm of a "Mathematics Practical" enabled a high-achieving student to push beyond getting a solution for a problem to extending, adapting and generalising his solution. The findings from this study indicate promise in achieving the learning of Polya`s model with notable success in the fourth stage, Look Back.
