Effect of Three Different Species of Hay on Dry-matter Intake and Serum Cortisol of Ewes
Sekine, J.,Abdel-Rahman, Mootaz A.M.,Ismail, A.El-Moez A.,Dosoky, R.M.,Kamel, H.E.M.,Hishinuma, M. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.9
To determine whether the feeding of different species of hay affects the dry-matter intake and the serum cortisol level of sheep, 6 non-pregnant, non-lactating ewes were offered alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay (Al), oats (Avena sativa) hay (Ot) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) hay (Pr) under 6 kinds of treatment including 1) change from Al to Ot, 2) Al to Pr, 3) Ot to Al, 4) Ot to Pr, 5) Pr to Al, and 6) Pr to Ot. The experimental design was a 6${\times}$6 Latin square with a 14 day period of which 9 days were a preliminary period and 5 days as a digestion trial period. The change in hay feeding was done abruptly on the first day of each period without an adaptation period. The blood from the jugular vein was collected on the first, third and the last day of each period through a sterile catheter for the analysis of cortisol. The dry-matter intake was recorded daily throughout the period. The mean daily intake of dry matter (DM, g/kg live weight) was significantly different among the 3 species of hay (Al>Ot>Pr; p<0.05). The digestibility of DM for Al and Ot was the same, but that for Pr was significantly lower than Al and Ot (p<0.05). The mean serum cortisol levels were significantly different among the hays (p<0.05). The level for Pr was the highest and that for Al was the lowest. The abrupt change of hay feeding of 6 treatments produced a significant change in the serum cortisol levels. The DM intake was inversely related to the change of the cortisol level. It is suggested that the animal' intake response to different species of hay may be partly motivated by the psychological feelings toward the hay offered.
EFFECT OF AGE ON THE LEVEL OF SERUM ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE ACTIVITY OF JAPANESE BLACK STEERS
Sekine, J.,Udagawa, K.,Morita, Z.,Oura, R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1989 Animal Bioscience Vol.2 No.2
The level of serum alkaline phosphatase activity was determined in 7 Japanese Black steers at different ages. The isoenzyme activity of non-bone origin was estimated using a heat-inactivation technique. The activity of serum alkaline phosphatase (SALP, K-A unit) decreased as age (AGE, mo.) increased: SALP = 14.15 - 0.17 (${\pm}\;0.03$) AGE, r = -0.81, P<0.01, $S.E.\;{\pm}\;0.28$. The variation of the activity was greater in younger age than the older. The temperature of $58^{\circ}C$ for the treatment of heat inactivation of bovine serum appeared to be suitable. The percentage of heat inactivated enzyme activity negatively correlated with age and positively with the level of serum alkaline phosphatase activity. The activity of SALP of non-bone origin was inferred to stay at about constant level irrespective of age and that of bone origin decreased with age.
METABOLIZABLE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS FOR MAINTENANCE AND GROWTH OF SUCKLING CALVES GIVEN MILK REPLACER
Sekine, J.,Oura, R.,Morita, Z.,Morooka, T.,Asahida, Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1988 Animal Bioscience Vol.1 No.2
A total of 38 energy balance trials were done for calves fed a liquid milk replacer, calf starter and second cut mixed hay. Milk replacer supplied 81% of the total dietary energy. Live weight of calves averaged 54.1 (S.D 6.2) kg and daily gain 0.37 (${\pm}0.23$)kg. The metabolizability of gross energy averaged 0.822. A regression was calculated relating energy retention (ER, $kJ/kg^{0.75}$) to the intake of metabolizable energy (IME, $kJ/kg^{0.75}$): ER = 0.72 (${\pm}0.12$) IME - 330, r = 0.702, P < 0.01, $S.E.{\pm}18.0$. Metabolizable energy for maintenance (MEm) was calculated to be $458kJ/kg^{0.75}$ when ER = 0. The amount of IME over MEm for an individual animal (Meg, $kJ/kg^{0.75}$) was regressed on averaged daily gain (ADG, kg): Meg = 413 (${\pm}91$) ADG + 0.2, r = 0.650, P < 0.01, $S.E.{\pm}21$. The amount of ME requirement for suckling calves was estimated using values obtained above.
WATER TURNOVER OF GROWING CATTLE FED FRESH CUT GRASS OR HAY AND GRAZED ON PASTURE
Sekine, J.,Morita, Z.,Asahida, Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1988 Animal Bioscience Vol.1 No.3
Water turnover and consumption of steers fed either fresh cut grass or hay and water turnover of steers grazed in summer or in fall were determined using 18 Holstein steers weighing 226 to 382 kg. Steers consumed 7.0 or 7.5 kg of dry-matter from hay or fresh cut grass. Animals fed hay drank significantly more water than those given fresh cut grass (P<0.01). Total water consumption, however, was greater in steers fed fresh cut grass than those given hay (P<0.05). Water turnover was about the same as total water consumption with a tendency for slightly higher values in water turnover irrespective of feeding regimes. Steers grazed in summer had greater water turnover than those grazed in fall. Water turnover was about the same in steers fed fresh cut grass and grazed in summer but decreased in steers on the dry ration or grazing in a cool season of the year.

To determine the effect of time after feeding on distribution of particle size of digesta in the gastrointestinal tract, 16 sheep given orchardgrass first cut hay were slaughtered at 2, 8, 16 and 24 hours after feeding and digesta in diverse sites of the tract were sieved into four fractions of particle size larger than $1180{\mu}m$, 300-1180, 45-300 and less than 45. Following results were obtained: 1) In the reticulo-rumen, the proportion of particles larger than $1180{\mu}m$ decreased with the time after feeding, while the other particle size fractions did not change with time after feeding. 2) In the post-ruminal alimentary tract, the proportion of particles larger than $1180{\mu}m$ was significantly smaller than that in the reticulo-rumen and distribution of fractions of every particle size stayed consistently at about the same level irrespective of the time after feeding. 3) In the cecum, the fraction of particle size less than $45{\mu}m$ appeared to be selectively retained when the passage rate was considered.
Present Status of Power Sustem Research in Japan
Sekine, Yasuji The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 1978 전기의 세계 Vol.27 No.5
1.Power utilities and CRIEPI are very active in almost all aspects of power systems research. 2.About 50% of research activity of CRIEPI is made under the joint work with power utilities. 3.Research motivation of manufactures are mainly stimulated by the need of power utilities and manufacturers are closely collaborating with power utilities. 4.Main effort of universities is concentrated upon the theoretical aspects of network analysis and the means of stability improvement. Univer sities are doing research rather independently of industry unless inexceptional cases. 5.Universities are making a significant contribution to the exploration of new horizon of power systems engineering, namely, in the research on the social impact on the future of power system. 6.Current main interest of power systems reserch is centered around the stability problem and power system operation and control. Research activity in power system planning is rather low as compared to that in these two major fields. A similar statement holds for the analysis of electromagnetic transients and short circuit analysis. However a new research field is sprouting in the area of power system protection.
WATER DRINKING BEHAVIOUR OF STEERS FED EITHER FRESH CUT FORAGE OR FIRST CUT HAY
Sekine, J.,Morita, Z.,Oura, R.,Asahida, Y. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1988 Animal Bioscience Vol.1 No.3
To study the effect of moisture content of the diet on drinking behaviour and the amount of water drunk, observations were made on 8 Holstein steers fed either fresh cut forage or first cut hay. The observations were made in a barn with a mean temperature of about $13^{\circ}C$. Drinking occurred mainly within 3 hours after feeding for the steers fed hay, while those fed soilage drank casually. Frequency of drinking (F) was related to the dry-matter concentration (DMC, %) of herbage: F = 0.47 (${\pm}0.09$) DMC - 6.5, $SE={\pm}0.4$, r = 0.86, P<0.01. Intake of drinking water for each 100 kg of live weight (IDW/100kg) for steers fed soilage was related to the dry-matter concentration: IDW/100kg = 0.55 (${\pm}0.06$) DMC - 8.7, $SE={\pm}0.3$, r = 0.94, P<0.01. The intake of water in each drinking period for animals fed fresh forage was curvilinearly related to the drinking frequency; for the hay-fed steers there was a negative linear relationship. When the drinking frequency for steers fed the fresh forage increased to the same as that observed for the hay, water intake in each drinking period was the same as found for the hay-fed steers.
