        Young people entering into colleges or universities commonly experience stress such as academic expectations, independent living away from home, uncertainties about future careers and difficulties in forming relationships. A recent national survey in Malaysia showed that one in five teenagers are suffering from depression (18.3%), two in five anxiety (39.7%), and one in ten stress (9.6%). In the past decade, the number of suicide or attempted suicide among college and university students have been increasing at an alarming rate. Besides mental health issues, there are serious concerns on the high unemployment among Malaysian graduates. Of the 250,000 students who graduate annually, one in five are unemployed with 35% being degree holders. The top three reasons identified by employers are lack of proficiency in English, lack of skillsets and lack of soft skills. These concerns highlight the need to equip students with soft skills to understand themselves and to relate to the world around them. Taylor’s University embodies holistic education with its core purpose “To educate the youth of the world to take their productive place as leaders in a global community”. Recognizing these gaps, the university has transformed its curriculum in 2018 by incorporating Life Skills modules which are based on Emotional Intelligence to all its first-year undergraduates. It aims to develop students’ personal and social competencies to help them navigate successfully in a world described as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). Students are guided by Life Skills facilitators through self-discovery process and collaborative activities using Experiential Learning pedagogy. In the two semesters of 2018, a total of 2,036 first-year Degree students had completed the programme with 87% of the students stating that they found the programme beneficial. In a separate cohort of 90 scholars, 48% of the students expressed an increase in confidence in regulating their emotions, 22% expressed an increase in their ability to adapt culturally and 26% expressed an increase as a confident communicator. The findings and commentaries from students support the benefits of Emotional Intelligence which helps students in managing their emotions, their academic tasks and develop healthy relationships.

        Effect of Dental Practicality Index training using an online video on decision-making and confidence level in treatment planning by dental undergraduates

        Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Dental Practicality Index (DPI) training using an online video on the treatment planning decisions and confidence level of dental undergraduates (DUs). Materials and Methods Ninety-four DUs were shown 15 clinical case scenarios and asked to decide on treatment plans based on 4 treatment options. The most appropriate treatment plan had been decided by a consensus panel of experienced dentists. DUs then underwent DPI training using an online video. In a post-DPI-training test, DUs were shown the same clinical case scenarios and asked to assign the best treatment option. After 6 weeks, DUs were retested to assess their knowledge retention. In all 3 tests, DUs completed the confidence level scale questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the related-samples Wilcoxon signed rank test and the independent-samples Mann-Whitney U test with the level of significance set at p < 0.05. Results DPI training significantly improved the mean scores of the DUs from 7.53 in the pre-DPI-training test to 9.01 in the post-DPI-training test (p < 0.001). After 6 weeks, the mean scores decreased marginally to 8.87 in the retention test (p = 0.563). DPI training increased their confidence level from 5.68 pre-DPI training to 7.09 post-DPI training. Conclusions Training DUs using DPI with an online video improved their decision-making and confidence level in treatment planning.       • Advances in self-healing supramolecular soft materials and nanocomposites

        The ability to rationally tune and add new end-groups in polymers can lead to transformative advances in emerging self-healing materials. Self-healing networks manipulated by supramolecular strategies such as hydrogen bonding and metal coordination have received significant attention in recent years because of their ability to extend materials lifetime, improve safety and ensure sustainability. This review describes the recent advancements in supramolecular polymers self-healing networks based on hydrogen bonding, metal-containing polymers and their nanocomposites. Collectively, the aim of this review is to provide a panoramic overview of the conceptual framework for the interesting nexus between hydrogen bonding and metal–ligand interactions for enabling supramolecular self-healing soft materials networks and nanocomposites. In addition, insights on the current challenges and future perspectives of this field to propel the development of self-healing materials will be provided.

        Changes in prostate-specific antigen kinetics during androgen-deprivation therapy as a predictor of response to abiraterone in chemonaïve patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer

        Purpose: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) has a poor prognosis. Abiraterone acetate (AA), enzalutamide, and chemotherapy are first-line treatments for patients with mCRPC. This study examined prognostic factors for AA response in the form of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics throughout androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) in chemonaïve patients with mCRPC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively included data from 34 chemonaïve patients with mCRPC who had received AA at some point between January 2017 and December 2018. We separated patients into two study arms according to the decrease in PSA percentages after use of AA for 3 months. We correlated PSA kinetics parameters with response and compared the two study groups with respect to PSA kinetics. Results: The patients’ median age was 77 years. In the total group of patients, 64% had a response to AA, whereas 35% did not. The ratio of the PSA level at nadir to the level during ADT was significantly higher in the AA-sensitive group (19.78 vs. 1.03, p=0.019). Conclusions: Patients who experienced a dramatic change in PSA level during ADT were more likely to be resistant to AA after progression to mCRPC. Chemotherapy rather than AA might be more suitable as a first-line treatment for these patients.

        Extended use of Prostate Health Index and percentage of [-2]pro-prostate-specific antigen in Chinese men with prostate specific antigen 10–20 ng/mL and normal digital rectal examination

        Purpose: We investigated the extended use of Prostate Health Index (PHI) and percentage of [-2]pro-prostate-specific antigen (%p2PSA) in Chinese men with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) 10–20 ng/mL and normal digital rectal examination (DRE). Materials and Methods: All consecutive Chinese men with PSA 10–20 ng/mL and normal DRE who agreed for transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided 10-core prostate biopsy were recruited. Blood samples were taken immediately before TRUS-guided prostate biopsy. The performances of total PSA (tPSA), %free-to-total PSA (%fPSA), %p2PSA, and PHI were compared using logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic, and decision curve analyses (DCA). Results: From 2008 to 2015, 312 consecutive Chinese men were included. Among them, 53 out of 312 (17.0%) men were diagnosed to have prostate cancer on biopsy. The proportions of men with positive biopsies were 6.7% in PHI<35, 22.8% in PHI 35–55, and 54.5% in PHI>55 (chi-square test, p<0.001). The area under curves (AUC) of the base model including age, tPSA and status of initial/repeated biopsy was 0.64. Adding %p2PSA and PHI to the base model improved the AUC to 0.79 (p<0.001) and 0.78 (p<0.001), respectively, and provided net clinical benefit in DCA. The positive biopsy rates of Gleason 7 or above prostate cancers were 2.2% for PHI<35, 7.9% for PHI 35–55, and 36.4% for PHI>55 (chi-square test, p<0.001). By utilizing the PHI cutoff of 35 to men with PSA 10–20 ng/mL and normal DRE, 57.1% (178 of 312) biopsies could be avoided. Conclusions: Both PHI and %p2PSA performed well in predicting prostate cancer and high grade prostate cancer. The use of PHI and %p2PSA should be extended to Chinese men with PSA 10–20 ng/mL and normal DRE.
