        Underwater sound channel in the northeastern East China Sea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In May 2015 a shallow-water acoustic variability experiment (SAVEX15) was conducted in the northeastern East China Sea. Surprisingly, an underwater sound channel that is typical for deep water was discovered in this shallow water waveguide (∼100 m deep) with the channel axis at around 40 m. For a broad-band source (0.5–2.0 kHz) deployed close to the channel axis, channel impulse responses observed by a vertical array exhibited a complex arrival structure with a large delay spread (e.g., 160 milliseconds). Most arrivals are found to be surface and bottom reflected, while a pair of high-intensity refracted arrivals are embedded in the early reflected arrivals. Broadband simulations based on a normal mode propagation model show good agreement with data.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> An underwater sound channel (USC) typical for deep water is found in the shallow northeastern East China Sea. </LI> <LI> Detailed observations on the environments and underwater acoustic data are presented. </LI> <LI> A complex structure of sound arrivals observed under the USC is separated into refracted and surface/bottom reflected ones with a broad-band simulation. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Jhang, Sea-Bun & Yang, Sang-Baek. 1998. CP Specifier Analysis of It-Clefts in English. Linguistics, 6-2, 23-43. The purpose of this paper is to provide some evidence for a CP specifier of cleft constructions in English and to give a uniformed analysis of it-clefts. We demonstrate some problems of previous analyses: dual analyses by Pinkham & Hankamer (1975) and Chomsky (1977), successive cyclic wh-movement, preposing clefted constituents, negation scope, and binding theory B & C. We show that the CP specifier analysis can give an explanatory adequacy over the previous analyses, providing some evidence that cleft behaves like wh-question. We hope that this paper will be contributed to motivating the further study of the cleft structure in the Minimalist Program for current linguistic theory.         Jhang, Sea-Bun. 1999. WH-questions in American Sign Language and Korean Sign Language. Linguistics 7-3, 297-319. The purpose of this paper is to compare some aspects of wh-questions in American Sign Language and Korean Sign Language, and to show that the data from KSL share some arguments provided by the two current disputing analyses of the rightward and leftward wh-movement. In both ASL and KSL, a nonmanual wh-marking functions as a grammatical marker, and wh-words are in situ, or they optionally appear in sentence-final position. In addition, the two languages have the distribution of nonmanual syntactic wh-marking in common. When manual wh-material is available in sentence-final position, the spread of wh-marking over the rest of the sentence is optional; otherwise, spread is obligatory. Two pieces of evidence from KSL in favor of rightward analysis are (i) extraction of wh-words from within an embedded clause and (ii) left-dislocation of wh-words in sentences containing spatial verbs. In contrast, there are three pieces of evidence from KSL in favor of leftward wfi-mmovement: (i) variants of extraction of wh-words from within an embedded clause, (ii) sentence-initial wh-object, (iii) focus function of right-peripheral Wh-material in wh-doubles sentences.         CASE REPORT : Familial Mediterranean Fever With Complete Symptomatic Remission During Pregnancy

        Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder, ethnically restricted and commonly found among populations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. FMF is the most prevalent autoinflammatory disease; is characterized by recurrent, self-limited episodes of fever with serositis; and is caused by Mediterranean fever gene (MEFV) mutations on chromosome 16. We describe a case of adult-onset FMF with complete symptomatic remission during pregnancy, without the use of colchicine. A 25-year-old woman had presented with periodic fever, abdominal pain, and vomiting since she was 21. Her abdominal computed tomography scan showed intestinal nonrotation. She underwent exploratory laparotomy and appendectomy for her symptoms 1 year prior. She had a symptom-free pregnancy period, but abdominal pain and fever recurred after delivery. Mutation analysis of the MEFV gene revealed two point mutations (p.Leu110Pro and p.Glu148Gln). We report an adult female patient with FMF in Korea with complete symptomatic remission during pregnancy. (Intest Res 2015;13:287-290)

      • Ficoll을 이용한 닭 염색체 분리 기법에 관한 연구

        본 연구는 닭의 혈액을 이용한 염색체의 분리 방법을 개선하고 자 ficoll을 이용한 순수 백혈구의 분리방법을 개발하고 한편 정밀 핵형 분석을 위한 고해상 염색체를 유기할 수 있는 새로운 배양방법도 제시하였다. 시험 분석은 실용산란계(ISA brown C. C.) 암,수 50개체의 혈액으로부터 백혈구 배양법에 의한 염색체 분리를 수행하고 관행적인 GTG-banding과 high resolution banding을 실시하였다. 닭의 혈액으로 부터 염색체 분리는 ficoll을 이용한 순수 백혈구 분리법을 응용 적용함으로서 중기상의 획득이 획기적으로 개선되었고, 관행적 방법에 비해 월등히 높은 분열지수(mitotic index)를 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 이를 이용한 GTG-banding과 high resolution banding으로서 공히 각 상동염색체별 일관성이 있는 명확하고 특징적 band양상을 얻을 수 있었다. high resolution banding에 의한 대형염색체들에 대한 평균 출현 band수는 150여개로서 관행적인 GTG-banding에 의한 80개의 band보다는 약 70여개정도 많은 band양상을 보였다. 또한 출현 band수의 범위도 GTG-banding의 경우 분석된 염색체간에 다소 큰 변이를 보이나, high resolution banding의 경우 세포들간의 동기화가 이루어져 균일한 양상의 band수를 나타내었다. 따라서 닭에 있어 ficoll처리에 의한 high resolution banding법은 기존 GTG-banding법을 대신할 뿐만 아니라 분자유전학적 연구 등을 위한 보다 정밀한 염색체 표지로서의 역할과 개선된 핵형분석의 자료로서 활용이 가능하리라 사료된다. This study was carried out to develop the method of chromosome preparation from chick blood culture and to identify chick chromosomal mark. Using the ficoll treatment in lymphocyte purification and application of high resolution banding technique in culture, a success result was obtained. The chromosomes were prepared from this culture method with 50 commercial chicks and then we analyzed GTG-banding and high resolution banding. The yield of metaphase spreads and percentage of mitotic index were improved by using of ficoll treatment in lymphocyte culture. The characteristic and distinctive patterns of GTG-band and high resolution band were obtained on each chromosome. The number of discernible bands on macrochromosomes was approximately 150 bands in high resolution banding and 80 bands in GTG-banding. The number of analyzed bands was much more variable in GTG-banding than in high resolution banding. This results implied that the growth cells were synchronized by high resolution banding treatment. Contrasting with a habitual GTG-banding in chicken chromosomes, the ficoll treatment and high resolution banding technique are very useful skill for advanced karyotype analysis and help more precise designation for molecular works.

        ‘전지구적 생명 위기의 극복’은 21세기 인류가 직면한 최대의 과제이다. 지난 수세기 동안의 ‘인간중심주의’, ‘기계론적 세계관’, ‘전지구적 산업화 과정’, ‘과학기술의 급속한 발달’ 등 다양한 요인들의 복합적 작용은 인간의 삶의 토대이자 동반자인 자연생태계의 심각한 손상은 물론 인류의 생존조차 위협하는 ‘전지구적 생명 위기의 시대’를 야기하였다. 이 논문에서는 전지구적 생명 위기 문제를 해결해 나가는 데 있어 양명학의 역할 가능성을 ‘자연과 인간의 한몸 체계’, ‘萬物一體의 仁心과 痛覺’, ‘親愛의 실천 활동’을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 양명학에 있어 인간과 자연생태계(天地萬物)는 유기적ㆍ상보적 관계망으로 이루어진 하나의 생명체이다. 인간은 ‘천지만물의 마음’이라고 하는 우주자연의 중추적 위상을 부여받은 존재로서 자연생태계의 손상을 자신의 아픔으로 느끼는 萬物一體의 仁心을 선험적으로 내재하고 있다. 따라서 인간은 仁心의 발현, 즉 자연생태계의 손상된 부위를 치유하고 나아가 자연생태계를 손상으로부터 보호하고 양육하는 親愛의 실천 활동을 통해서만이 자신의 생명 본질은 물론 전우주작 사명을 실현할 수 있다. 우리는 양명학을 통해 자연을 단지 인간의 욕망 충족을 위한 도구ㆍ수단ㆍ착취ㆍ정복의 대상이 아닌 상처를 치유하고 보살피고 양육해야 하는 親愛의 대상으로 보아야 한다는 철학적 당위성과 교훈을 제공받을 수 있다. The conquest of the global crisis of life is the most important subject that human beings are confronted with in the 21st century. The compound action of such diverse factors as anthropocentrism, mechanical world-view, the global industrialization-process and the rapid development of science and technology in last few centuries has provoked the era of the global crisis of life which not only destructs ecosystem but also threatens the human survival. This thesis is study on the role of Yang-Ming studies to solve the problem of the global crisis of life centered on one organic system of nature and men, the benevolence of Unity of all things, a sense of pain and the practical action of affection. In the view of Yang-Ming studies, the universe is one organic body that consists of organic and reciprocal network between men and all things in the world. Man is the central being of the universe called the mind and heart of all things in the world and then transcendentally has the benevolence of Unity of all things which feels a pain when he is confronted with the injury of ecosystem. So man can not only achieve his own essence of life but also accomplish his universal mission only through the revelation of his benevolence of Unity of all things, that is, the practical action of affection that heal the injury of ecosystem, protect it from injury and bring up it. Such Yang-Ming studies can offer us the philosophical inevitability and teaching that we must not regard the nature as the object of instrument, means, exploitation and conquest to satisfy our own desire but regard it as the object of benevolence and affection.
