Slightly-slacked dropout for improving neural network learning on FPGA
Sota Sawaguchi,Hiroaki Nishi 한국통신학회 2018 ICT Express Vol.4 No.2
Neural Network Learning (NNL) is compute-intensive. It often involves a dropout technique which effectively regularizes the network to avoid overfitting. As such, a hardware accelerator for dropout NNL has been proposed; however, the existing method encounters a huge transfer cost between hardware and software. This paper proposes Slightly-Slacked Dropout (SS-Dropout), a novel deterministic dropout technique to address the transfer cost while accelerating the process. Experimental results show that our SS-Dropout technique improves both the usual and dropout NNL accelerator, i.e., 1.55 times speed-up and three order-of-magnitude less transfer cost, respectively.

The handsheets were prepared from softwood bleached sulfate pulp added with a soap-type rosin sizing agent. The rosin sizing agents on the surface of the handsheets were chemically modified with OsO₄ vapor. The rosin existing in the surface layer of the depth of 10nm and 1nm were characterized by using ESCA and TOF-SIMS, respectively. The results show that the rosin sizing agents in the very thin surface layer were well characterized by OsOf peak intensities in ESCA. OsOf peak intensities increased with the increase in the added amount of rosin.<br/> However, the secondary negative ion intensity were not properly characterized in TOF-SIMS, because the secondary OsOx ions intensity had a minimum with the increase in the added amount of rosin. The positive ion intensity originated from the other site than Os atom showed a proper characterization.

Purpose: As the number of total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) increases, the incidence of femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA is also increasing. This review aimed to suggest a new surgically oriented classification system for femoral periprosthetic fractures. Methods: We investigated the classifications, and current treatment trends for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA by means of a thorough review of the relevant literature. Results: Numerous studies reported good results of surgical treatment with modern fixatives including locking compression plates and retrograde intramedullary nails. However, few classifications of femoral periprosthetic fractures reflect the recent developments in surgical treatment. Conclusions: We recommend that surgical management be considered the firstline treatment for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA. Our new classification will help in deciding the surgical treatment option for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA.
