Feed Intake, Digestibility, and N Retention in Cattle Fed Rice Straw and Para Grass Combined with Different Levels of Protein Derived from Cassava Foliage

        Sath, K.,Sokun, K.,Pauly, T.,Holtenius, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.7

Eight male cattle of Local Yellow breed with an average live weight of 121 kg and an average age of 18 months were used to evaluate the effects of different levels of sun-dried cassava foliage supplementation (Manihot esculenta) on intake, digestibility and N retention. Rice straw ad libitum and para grass (Brachiaria mutica) at 1% DM of BW comprised the basal diet. The study was arranged as a $4{\times}4$ double Latin square design, with cassava foliage contributing 0, 0.8, 1.6 or 2.4 g CP/kg BW. The cattle selected cassava leaves in preference to petioles. Petiole intake decreased from 64 to 48% of offered petioles when the cassava foliage proportion increased from the lowest to the highest level. The cattle consumed all the leaves at the two lower levels of cassava foliage inclusion and 91% at the highest level. Rice straw intake decreased significantly as the level of cassava foliage increased. Intake of DM, OM, NDF, and ADF increased significantly with increasing intake of cassava foliage. Daily DM intake per 100 kg BW increased from 2.7 to 3.2 kg with increasing cassava foliage intake. No effect on CP digestibility was detected when the level of cassava foliage increased. Digestibility of DM, OM, NDF and ADF was significantly higher in the group fed no cassava foliage than in the other groups. N retention increased from 16 to 28 g/d with the first level of cassava foliage inclusion, but levelled out at the two highest levels. N excretion increased in both faeces and urine as a response to higher intake of cassava foliage. Maximum N retention occurred when 40% of total N intake came from cassava foliage (equivalent to 1.3 g CP/kg BW).

Mineral Status in Cattle Fed Rice Straw and Para Grass Combined with Different Levels of Protein Derived from Cassava Foliage

Sath, K.,Pauly, T.,Holtenius, K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.1

Eight male cattle of the Local Yellow breed with an average live weight of 121 kg and an average age of 18 months were used to evaluate the effects of different levels of sun-dried cassava (Manihot esculenta) foliage supplementation on mineral metabolism in growing cattle fed rice straw and para grass as basal diet. The cassava foliage intake was lower than the planned levels. DM consumption was significantly affected by cassava foliage supplementation, with the largest intake observed at the two highest levels of cassava foliage supplementation. Rice straw intake showed the opposite pattern, with lower intake at higher cassava foliage supplementation. No refusals occurred for para grass in any of the treatments. Ca, P, Mg, K, S and Mn intake increased significantly with increasing intake of cassava foliage, but Na intake was not affected by treatment. Faecal excretion of Ca, Mg, S and Mn increased significantly with increasing cassava foliage intake. There were no differences between P, K and Na excretion in faeces. There was a significant diet effect on Mg, S and Mn digestibility. Mg and Mn digestibility increased with increasing cassava foliage supplementation, while S digestibility decreased. Ca, P, K and Na digestibility was not affected by diet. There was a significant effect of treatment on P retention, with the highest value observed for supplementation with 1.6 g CP/kg BW cassava foliage. Ca and Mg showed similar trends, with the highest retention again for supplementation with 1.6 g CP/kg BW cassava foliage. There were weak but significant positive correlations between nitrogen retention and the macro minerals Ca, P and Mg. Furthermore, retention of all these minerals was positively correlated. Mineral losses in urine were not affected by dietary treatment with the exception of P excretion, which was affected by treatment. In conclusion, cassava foliage is a good Ca source which compensates for the low Ca content in rice straw and para grass, but P deficiency appears to be exaggerated in cattle with higher cassava intake. The results suggest that under these conditions growing cattle on a high cassava intake would benefit from P and S supplementation.

Comparative Analysis of ABM/P-15, Bone Morphogenic Protein and Demineralized Bone Matrix after Instrumented Lumbar Interbody Fusion

        Sathe, Ashwin,Lee, Sang-Ho,Kim, Shin-Jae,Eun, Sang Soo,Choi, Yong Soo,Lee, Shih-min,Seuk, Ju-Wan,Lee, Yoon Sun,Shin, Sang-Ha,Bae, Junseok The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.6

Objective : ABM/P-15 (anorganic bone matrix/15-amino acid peptide fragment) is a commercially available synthetically manufactured P-15 collagen peptide fragment, that is adsorbed on ABM. This study was done to investigate the efficacy of ABM/P-15 in achieving fusion in the lumbar spine and comparing it with that of recombinant bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM). Methods : A retrospective observational study of prospectively collected data of 140 patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion surgeries in a single specialty spine hospital between 2016 and 2020, with a minimum 6-month follow-up was conducted. Based on the material used for the augmentation of the bone graft at the fusion site, the patients were divided into three categories namely ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM group. Results : ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM were used in 46, 44, and 50 patients, respectively. Patient characteristics like age, gender, bone mineral density, smoking history, and presence of diabetes mellitus were comparable amongst the three groups. Average follow-up was 16.0±5.2, 17.9±9.8, and 26.2±14.9 months, respectively in ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM groups. The fusion was achieved in 97.9%, 93.2%, and 98% patients while the average time-to-union was 4.05±2.01, 10±4.28, and 9.44±3.49 months (p<0.001), respectively for ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM groups. The average pre-operative Visual analogue scale score was 6.93±2.42, 7.14±1.97, 7.01±2.14 (p=0.900) for ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2 and DBM groups, respectively, which reduced to 1.02±0.80, 1.21±0.96, and 0.54±0.70 (p=0.112), respectively at the last follow up. Pre-operative Oswestry disability index scores were 52.7±18.02, 55.4±16.8, and 53.56±19.6 (p=0.751) in ABM/P-15, rhBMP-2, and DBM groups, which post-operatively reduced to 33.77±15.52, 39.42±16.47, and 38.3±15.89 (p=0.412) and further to 15.74±8.3, 17.41±10.45, and 16.76±9.81 (p=0.603), respectively at the last follow-up. Conclusion : ABM/P-15 appears to achieve union significantly earlier than rhBMP-2 and DBM in lumbar spinal fusion cases while maintaining a comparable clinical and complication profile.

Correlation of Paraspinal Muscle Mass With Decompensation of Sagittal Adult Spinal Deformity After Setting of Fatigue Post 10-Minute Walk

        배준석,Ashwin Sathe,이세민,Alexander A. Theologis,Vedat Deviren,이상호 대한척추신경외과학회 2021 Neurospine Vol.18 No.3

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in spinopelvic parameters before and after the setting of muscle fatigue along with its correlation with pre-existing paraspinal and psoas muscle mass. Methods: Single-center retrospective review of prospectively collected data was conducted on 145-adults with symptomatic loss of lumbar lordosis (LL). Radiographs were taken before and after walking for 10 minutes. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to calculate paraspinal muscle (PSM) cross-sectional area (CSA), mean signal intensity, fatty infiltration (FI), and lean muscle mass at thoracolumbar junction (T12) and lower lumbar level (L4). Psoas CSA was calculated at L3. Patients were divided into 2 groups namely compensated sagittal deformity (CSD) (SVA ≤4 cm, PT>20°) and decompensated sagittal deformity (DSD) (SVA>4 cm, PT>20°) based on prewalk measurements. Results: Initial mean SVA was 1.8 cm and 11 cm for CSD and DSD respectively (p<0.01). After walking, significant deteriorations in SVA, PT–LL (p<0.01) were observed in CSD without significant change in thoracic kyphosis (TK). All sagittal parameters in DSD deteriorated significantly. DSD group had significantly poorer PSM quality at T12 and L4 compared to CSD group. In CSD group, sagittal decompensation correlated with muscle quality, i.e., decreases in LL (ΔLL) correlated with CSA of PSM/vertebral body (VB) at L4 (r= -0.412, p=0.046) while increases in TK (ΔTK) correlated with CSA of PSM/VB at T12 (r=0.477, p=0.018). ΔSVA and ΔPT correlated with FI at L4 (r=0.577, p=0.003 and r=-0.407, p=0.048, respectively). DSD group, had weak correlations (-0.3<r<-0.1) between changes in sagittal and PSM parameters. Conclusion: PSM quality in adults with spinal deformity correlates with patients’ ability to maintain an upright posture and sagittal decompensation after walking for 10 minutes.

Development of plasmacytoid and conventional dendritic cell subtypes from single precursor cells derived in vitro and in vivo

        Naik, Shalin H,Sathe, Priyanka,Park, Hae-Young,Metcalf, Donald,Proietto, Anna I,Dakic, Aleksander,Carotta, Sebastian,O'Keeffe, Meredith,Bahlo, Melanie,Papenfuss, Anthony,Kwak, Jong-Young,Wu, Li,Shortm NATURE AMERICA INC 2007 NATURE IMMUNOLOGY Vol.8 No.11

The development of functionally specialized subtypes of dendritic cells (DCs) can be modeled through the culture of bone marrow with the ligand for the cytokine receptor Flt3. Such cultures produce DCs resembling spleen plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), CD8+ conventional DCs (cDCs) and CD8− cDCs. Here we isolated two sequential DC-committed precursor cells from such cultures: dividing 'pro-DCs', which gave rise to transitional 'pre-DCs' en route to differentiating into the three distinct DC subtypes (pDCs, CD8+ cDCs and CD8− cDCs). We also isolated an in vivo equivalent of the DC-committed pro-DC precursor cell, which also gave rise to the three DC subtypes. Clonal analysis of the progeny of individual pro-DC precursors demonstrated that some pro-DC precursors gave rise to all three DC subtypes, some produced cDCs but not pDCs, and some were fully committed to a single DC subtype. Thus, commitment to particular DC subtypes begins mainly at this pro-DC stage.

Contrast Enhanced Ultrasonography and CT Features of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in a Dog

        Saran Chhoey,Soyeon Kim,Kroesna Kang,Sath Keo,최지혜 한국임상수의학회 2023 한국임상수의학회지 Vol.40 No.5

A large abdominal mass was incidentally found in a 13-year-old mixed-breed dog and was confirmed to be a cecal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and post-contrast computed tomography (CT) showed mild contrast enhancement of the mass, indicating low blood flow. The tumor origin was determined to be the cecum by identifying the vessels supplying the mass on post-contrast CT. The exophytic growth of the tumor left the cecal lumen intact without obstruction. This report described the CEUS and CT perfusion of the cecal GIST and perfusion evaluation can help diagnose and characterize GISTs in dogs.

Electrochemical determination of semicarbazide on cobalt oxide nanoparticles: Implication towards environmental monitoring

        Balaji B. Mulik,Ajay V. Munde,Raviraj P. Dighole,Bhaskar R. Sathe 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.93 No.-

The electrochemical determination of semicarbazide (SCB) executed by using cobalt oxide (Co3O4)nanoparticle modified electrode which was fabricated by using simple precipitation method. The assynthesizednanoparticles have been well characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Furrier transforminfra-red (FTIR), UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopic techniques, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray(EDAX), BET surface area, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and transmission electron microscopic (TEM)techniques. The XRD shows face centred cubic (FCC) structure, the FTIR demonstrated a major bandsappeared at 574 cm 1 and 669 cm 1 are suggesting the (Co-O) vibrational mode of Co3O4. The TEM ofCo3O4 NPs has been confirmed its ultra-small particle size is of2 nm 0.5 nm. Whereas, EDAX showsthe only cobalt and oxygen are available confirms Co3O4 having high BET surface area. The fabricatedCo3O4 acted as a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of SCB by using linearSweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in0.5 M KOH solution. Significantly, anodic onset potential observed at 0.2 V vs. SCE, linear range of scanrate and concentration (1 mM–100 mM) with (LOD 0.13 and LOQ 0.46) and high current and potentialstability with pH dependent behaviour confirms Co3O4 based electrocatalytic system is good for oxidativedetermination of SCB. The selectivity of the sensor also tested by using mixture of other environmentalactive species with SCB by using LSV measurements. This proposed system is applicable in food andpharmaceutical industries for the determination of SCB as an amperometric sensor.
