Objective: N -acetylcysteine (NAC) is a novel therapeutic agent with multiple mechanisms of action in the central nervous system and a favourable side effect profile. Clinical evidence indicates that adjunctive NAC may reduce the severity of depressive symptoms in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: A 12-week randomised controlled trial of 2,000 mg/day adjunctive NAC for MDD found no significant improvement at the primary endpoint (week 12) but did see improvements at the post-discontinuation interview (week 16). Within the context of patient-centered treatment, mixed-methods qualitative analysis was also included to explore factors that may determine individual responses to adjunctive NAC treatment. These data were drawn, under blinded conditions, from clinician notes recorded in the case report form. Using the DSM-5 symptom profile for MDD as the initial framework, themes were developed and explored. Frequencies were compared between placebo and NAC groups. Results: Per protocol analysis of individual themes across the six interviews revealed group differences in favour of NAC for overall depressive affect, optimism, relationships and reduced functional impairment. Conclusion: This study provides further evidence for the utility of the mixed methods approach complimenting the primary findings using traditional quantitative analyses, as well as being able to capture additional, often more subtle, evidence of individual symptom-level change that reflects improvement in functional abilities in response to NAC supplementation. The use of mixed methods to explore outcomes from psychiatric studies should be considered in future to work towards improved patient-centred care and both confirm quantitative findings and generate novel hypotheses.
SucA-dependent uptake of sucrose across the outer membrane of Caulobacter crescentus
Samantha K. Modrak,Martha E. Melin,Lisa M. Bowers 한국미생물학회 2018 The journal of microbiology Vol.56 No.9
Caulobacter crescentus is an aquatic Gram-negative bacterium that lives in nutrient-poor environments. Like several other aquatic and phytopathogenic bacteria, Caulobacter cells have a relatively large number of genes predicted to encode TonB-dependent receptors (TBDRs). TBDRs transport nutrients across the outer membrane using energy from the proton motive force. We identified one TBDR gene, sucA, which is situated within a cluster of genes predicted to encode a lacIfamily transcription factor (sucR), amylosucrase (sucB), fructokinase (sucC), and an inner membrane transporter (sucD). Given its genomic neighborhood, we proposed that sucA encodes a transporter for sucrose. Using RT-qPCR, we determined that expression of sucABCD is strongly induced by sucrose in the media and repressed by the transcription factor, SucR. Furthermore, cells with a deletion of sucA have a reduced uptake of sucrose. Although cells with a non-polar deletion of sucA can grow with sucrose as the sole carbon source, cells with a polar deletion that eliminates expression of sucABCD cannot grow with sucrose as the sole carbon source. These results show that the suc locus is essential for sucrose utilization while SucA functions as one method of sucrose uptake in Caulobacter crescentus. This work sheds light on a new carbohydrate utilization locus in Caulobacter crescentus.
Operationalising the Theory of Social Quality
Samantha B. Meyer,Tini C. N. Luong,Paul R. Ward,George Tsourtos 서울대학교 사회발전연구소 2010 Journal of Asian Sociology Vol.39 No.2
The Theory of Social Quality (TSQ) has not yet had extensive empirical testing for due to the difficulty of developing a validated and reliable tool to ‘measure’ social quality. A survey investigating social quality was piloted (n = 33) and analysed for test-retest and inter-item reliability in Australia, August 2009. Questions were considered reliable if the results from the test re-test analyses (Kappa, or Spearman Correlation tests) and the interitem reliability test (Cronbach’s α) were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) or the coefficients were (≥ 0.70) for any of the questionnaire items. Two questions and 34 items were removed from the survey. These preliminary data support the reliability and validity of the survey as an instrument for measuring social quality. In addition, the tool provides a means for operationalising the TSQ in future empirical research.
Cytogenetic Analysis of Bienertia sinuspersici Akhani as the First Step in Genome Sequencing

Background C4 plants are efficient in suppressing photorespiration and enhancing carbon gain as compared to C3 plants. Bienertia sinuspersici Akhani is one of the few species in the family Amaranthaceae that can perform C4 photosynthesis within individual chlorenchyma cells, without the conventional Kranz anatomy in its leaf. This plant is salt-tolerant and is well-adapted to thrive in hot and humid climates. To date, there have been no reported cytogenetic analyses yet on this species. Objective This study aims to provide a cytogenetic analysis of B. sinuspersici as the first step in genome sequencing. Methods Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) karyotype analysis was conducted using the metaphase chromosomes of B. sinuspersici probed with 5S and 45S rDNA and Arabidopsis-type telomeric repeats. Results Results of the cytogenetic analysis confirmed that B. sinuspersici has 2n = 2x = 18 consisting of nine pairs of metacentric chromosomes. Two loci of 45S rDNA were found on the distal regions of the short arm of chromosome 7. Nine loci of 5S rDNA were found in the pericentromeric regions of chromosomes 1, 3, 4, 6, and 8, which also colocalized with Arabidopsis-type telomeric repeats; while four loci in the interstitial regions of chromosome 5 and 8 can be observed. The single locus of 5S rDNA that was found in chromosome 8 appears to be hemizygous. Conclusion The FISH karyotype analysis, based on the combination of rDNAs, telomeric tandem repeat markers and C0t DNA chromosome landmarks, allowed efficient chromosome identification and provided useful information in characterizing the genome of B. sinuspersici.

Firefly populations are threatened globally by habitat alteration, pesticide use, and anthropogenic sources of light. Lamprigera fireflies were recently reported at an urban city park in Kuala Lumpur, Peninsular Malaysia. Here we report on the responses of Lamprigera larvae to artificial light from street lamps on paved park trails. Larvae were located farther from artificial light sources when street lamps were illuminated than when they were not, and mostly where light intensities were lowest, off park trails. Larvae that were located within the direct field of illumination tended to be immobile, whereas, when street lamps were turned off, they actively travelled paved trails. Larvae positioned directly in the path of downwelling light from street lamps at dusk may therefore experience an effectively longer diurnal period, limited time for active foraging, and greater exposure to pedestrian traffic.

From the beginning of the twentieth century, ‘Modernism’ impacted and transformed art and clothing. Pablo Picasso and Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel were two of the most central characters in Modernism working simultaneously in their disciplines. Picasso’s innovations, particularly in abstract art and Chanel’s fashion designs, that dramatically departed from the previous corseted and highly decorative styles, were so significant that they have left an influence on contemporary art and fashion. This study will compare their visual works and documented evidence of their motivations, within the contextof their cultural backgrounds, to reveal meaning in the occurrences of overlaps. This approach has examined the historical, cultural background of the artist and designer’s environment from different perspectives, adding to previous research in this area. Through this research, outcomes of the analysis have shown similarities and divergences in the wider genres of art and fashion and the practice of the artist and fashion designer. The reference list to this text, used in the survey, gives a comprehensive overview of pertinent publications disseminating Picasso and Chanel’s visual works, oral perspectives and cultural impact.
