Korean Education as a Foreign Language for College Students in Japan Based on Applied Linguistics
( Tamie Saeki ) 범태평양응용언어학회 2004 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.8 No.2
The studies about "language and culture/society" and "language and psychology" are important matters in the area of FL (foreign language) education which aims at communicative competence in applied linguistics. (Okada, 1999; Park & Nakano, 2000; Saeki, 2002). Korean learning increased suddenly from around 2002 in Japan. Korean courses in Japanese colleges also increased (International Cultural Forum 2003). As a result, requirements for a fuller Korean education are increasing. However, although there are a lot of studies about linguistic approaches, it is difficult to find any studies about Korean education as a FL which focus on "language and culture/society" aimed at communicative competence. The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual learning situation vis-a-vis learning motivation, textbooks, and the pursuit of effective college Korean education in Japan aiming at communicative competence by applying the studies on psycholinguistics (Park, 1991, 1998), and sociolinguistics (Park, 1991; Hall, 1983). This paper is likely to be the first one of its kind in Japan to discuss the Korean language as a FL for Japanese students aimed at communicative competence.
Spalling of the Oxide Scales Foemed on Stainless Steels During Cooling
Saeki, Isao,Ogama, Tetsuro,Furuichi, Ryusaburo,Kikkawa, Shinichi 한국부식방식학회 2003 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.2 No.5
High temperature oxidation of SUS430 and SUS304 stainless steels in 16.7 kPa O₂ - 20.3 kPa H₂O- balanced N2 atmosphere at 1273 K was studied focused on the scale spalling during cooling after an isothermal oxidation. Spalling of the oxide scale during cooling occurred only for SUS304 stainless steel. The oxide scale was composed of two layers and they detached at the interface between them. The reason for the spalling could not be explained only by thermal stresses applied to the specimen during heating and cooling. A new mechanism for scale spalling was proposed based on combination of thermal stresses and thermal shock caused by a fast Martensite transformation of substrate metal.
The Perry Centennial of 1953 in Okinawa
Chizuru Saeki 서울대학교 국제학연구소 2012 Journal of International and Area Studies Vol.19 No.2
This paper examines the significance of the Perry Centennial festival of 1953, the 100-year anniversary of the United States’ opening Okinawa of 1853. The U.S. government regarded the Centennial as an excellent opportunity to promote American democracy in Postwar Okinawa, particularly at the moment when Soviet pressure in Asia increased. In order to prevent Communist aggression and gain Okinawan people’s understanding on U.S. policy in East Asia, the U.S. used the Perry Centennial to emphasize the mutual unity and security with Okinawa. The U.S. military government in Okinawa sought to present the drama of Commodore Matthew C. Perry’s diplomacy and the success of his historic naval expedition to underscore the world leadership of the United States in 1953. The article examines such America’s cultural diplomacy toward Okinawa, and describes how the Perry Centennial of 1953 helped shape the public opinion on U.S. policy in Cold War in Okinawa.
