Ⅰ. What Pope Francis Said and Did A. Meeting with Civil Authorities and the Diplomatic Corps B. Eucharist with Church Leaders C. Encounter with Families D. Holy Mass at the Tacloban Airport E. Encounter with the Youth at the University of Santo Tomas F. Concluding Eucharist at the Rizal Park Ⅱ. What Has Happened and What Has Not Yet Happened A. The Phenomenal Impact and Reception B. The Awful Needs Which Still Remain

Extrinsic compression of the subaxial vertebral artery (VA) may cause rotational occlusion syndrome (ROS) and contribute to vertebrobasilar insufficiency potentially leading to symptoms and in severe cases, to posterior circulation strokes. The present literature review aimed to report the main clinical findings, diagnostic work-up, and surgical management of the subaxial VA-ROS, the diagnosis of which can be difficult and is often underestimated. An illustrative case is also presented. A thorough literature search was conducted to retrieve manuscripts that have discussed the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of ROS. Total 41 articles were selected based on the best match and relevance and mainly involved case reports and small cases series. The male/female ratio and average age were 2.6 and 55.6±11 years, respectively. Dizziness, visual disturbances, and syncope were the most frequent symptoms in order of frequency, while C5 and C6 were the most affected levels. Osteophytes were the cause in >46.2% of cases. Dynamic VA catheter-based angiography was the gold standard for diagnosis along with computed tomography angiography. Except in older patients and those with prohibitive comorbidities, anterior decompressive surgery was always performed, mostly with complete recovery, and zero morbidity and mortality. A careful neurological evaluation and dynamic angiographic studies are crucial for the diagnosis of subaxial VA-ROS. Anterior decompression of the VA is the cure of this syndrome in almost all cases.

Background Breast augmentation with implants is the most commonly performed cosmetic plastic surgery in Brazil and worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess patient satisfaction and quality of life following subpectoral breast augmentation with either microtextured or macrotextured implants, using the BREAST-Q. Methods A prospective study was conducted with 40 women with hypomastia undergoing subpectoral breast augmentation. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups to receive either microtextured or macrotextured breast implants. All participants were assessed preoperatively (baseline) and after 2 and 4 months of surgery for quality of life and patient satisfaction with the surgical results, using the BREAST-Q augmentation module, a patient-reported outcome measure. Results The patients had amean age of 28.96.45 years. Themicrotextured (n¼20) and macrotextured (n¼20) groups were homogeneous for sex, age, education level, marital status, and number of children (p>0.05). Both groups showed significant improvement in satisfaction with breasts (p<0.001), psychosocial well-being (p<0.001), and sexual well-being (p<0.001) at the 2- and 4-month follow-up visits compared with baseline. The observed improvements were associated with high effect size values of 5.09, 3.44, and 3.90, respectively. In contrast, significant decreases from baseline in physical well-being scores (p¼0.001) were found 2 and 4 weeks after surgery in both groups. Conclusion Subpectoral breast augmentation with either microtextured or macrotextured breast implants improved satisfaction with breasts and quality of life in patients with hypomastia.

Shape memory alloys are mainly used in medical devices and surgical implants due to their biocompatibility. Machining these alloys into intricate patterns can be challenging due to their poor thermal conductivity which could lead to a poor surface finish. The poor surface finish causes a release of toxic elements such as Nickel, leading to contact allergies and thus deteriorating its biocompatibility. Using the right cooling technology can help improve their machinability and overcome issues related to surface integrity. The current study investigates the effect of milling parameters (cutting-speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) and different cooling strategies (flood coolant, cryogenic liquid nitrogen, and a hybrid approach) on the surface integrity of F2063 Ni55.6Ti44.4 shape memory alloy. In addition, the effect of cryogenically treating the cutting tool for further enhancement of surface finish was investigated. A considerable modification on the milled surfaces was observed when using the hybrid cooling/milling approach and cryo-treated tools in terms of morphological, chemical compositional, crystallographic, and microhardness. In addition, this modified surface had a noticeably improved bioactivity due to enhanced hydrophobicity (with contact angle 92°) and surface topography (Ra: 341.69 nm), which favoured cell adhesion and proliferation. The results indicate that the modified Ni55.6Ti44.4 alloy surface might be adequate for use in medical applications.

The goal of the this study was to evaluate the mutagenic/antimutagenic effects of conventional (BRS133) and transgenic (BRS 245 RR) soybeans (CS and TS, respectively) in vivo using the bone marrow micronucleus (MN) test, histopathological analysis, chromosome aberration test (CAT), and mitotic index (MI) determination. Six-week-old male Swiss mice were fed with pelleted commercial diet mixed with CS or TS at 10% or 20%. Two experimental designs (MN and CAT) were conducted simultaneously with 10 groups each during a 15-day period. Animals were treated with pelleted commercial diet, CS (10% or 20%), or TS (10% or 20%), and on day 14 they also received cyclophosphamide (CP) (50mg/kg i.p.). The 10% and 20% CS and TS diets did not significantly decrease the frequencies of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes in bone marrow induced by CP. However, the CAT indicated that the 10% and 20% CS diets significantly (P<.05) protected nucleated bone marrow cells against chemical-induced mutagenesis and also produced a significant (P<.05) decrease in the total percentage of spontaneous aberrations. Among the treatments with TS, only the 10% TS diet reduced the percentage of total aberrations induced by CP. The results also indicated that the treatment with 20% TS alone significantly (P<.05) decreased the MI, indicating cytotoxic effects related to the treatment. Taken together, our results suggest that, under the tested conditions, TS and CS have antimutagenic properties and are not toxic.

Platonia insignis Mart. (Clusiaceae) is a medicinal plant from the Brazilian Amazon region. The present study evaluated the biological potential of the ethanol extract (Pi-EtOH) and ethyl acetate fraction (Pi-EtOAc) of the P. insignis fruit shells on the cardiovascular system of rats. Pi-EtOH or Pi-EtOAc (12.5, 25, and 50mg/kg) was administered intravenously in normotensive rats (260–300 g), and the mean arterial pressure and the heart rate were monitored. The Pi-EtOH induced hypotension ( - 11.56– 0.89, - 7.43– 0.85, and - 17.56– 1.97 mmHg) followed by bradycardia in two highest doses ( - 8.89– 3.62 and - 15.79– 1.83 beats/min) and Pi-EtOAc, at the same doses, induced hypotension ( - 11.2– 1.03, - 14.48– 1.13, - 29.89– 2.67 mmHg)more intensively, followedby tachycardia at thedose12.5and25mg/kg(15.64– 2.06, 19.31– 1.92 beats/min) and bradycardia at a dose of 50mg/kg (- 9.98– 7.33 beats/min). The hypotensive response from Pi-EtOAc was not attenuated when used in the pretreatment with L-NAME, verapamil, propranolol, and hexamethonium. However, when using yohimbine, the hypotensive effect was inhibited ( - 4.42– 1.28 (P< .05), - 3.29– 0.99 (P< .05), 2.06– 1.18 mmHg (P< .05); Student’s t-test). Hence, the Pi-EtOAc seems to act similarly to the a2-adrenergic agonist in this hypotensive effect.
