        Hong JeongHa's Tianyuanshu and Zhengcheng Kaifangfa

        Tianyuanshu and Zengcheng Kaifangfa introduced in the Song-Yuan dynasties and their contribution to the theory of equations are one of the most important achievements in the history of Chinese mathematics. Furthermore, they became the most fundamental subject in the history of East Asian mathematics as well. The operations, or the mathematical structure of polynomials have been overlooked by traditional mathematics books. Investigation of GuIlJib (九一集) of Joseon mathematician Hong JeongHa reveals that Hong's approach to polynomials is highly structural. For the expansion of $\prod_{k=11}^{n}(x+a_k)$, Hong invented a new method which we name Hong JeongHa's synthetic expansion. Using this, he reveals that the processes in Zhengcheng Kaifangfa is not synthetic division but synthetic expansion.

        The Effect of Sa-am acupuncture on Knee Osteoarthritis

        Objective: Acupuncture has been widely used throughout the world for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (knee OA). This study investigated whether acupuncture, particularly Sa-am acupuncture, could be effective in relieving pain and improving the symptoms of knee OA. Method: This study was conducted as a prospective, randomized, controlled, and patient- and investigator- blinded clinical trial. Forty volunteers with knee OA participated in the study. All participants were screened through an inclusion and exclusion criteria. Thirty four participants completed the clinical trial. In total, forty subjects were randomly selected to receive Sa-am acupuncture. Eight sessions of acupuncture were given at the contralateral side of the problematic knee for 4 weeks. Korean translation of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (KWOMAC) scores were measured twice: at the beginning and end of the clinical trial period. Both the Patient Global Assessment and physical health scores based on the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey were also used to measure the results. Results: Compared to the pre-trial scores, the Sa-am acupuncture group (n=34) showed a significant decrease in KWOMAC total scores according to a paired t -test. The Sa-am acupuncture group also showed significant improvement in the Patient Global Assessment when compared to the pre-trial. Conclusions: Sa-am acupuncture for knee OA resulted in an improved KWOMAC total score. This was mostly driven by the function component score that was greatly affected by acupuncture. However, further studies with expanded designs are needed to solidify this finding with scientific rigor.

        Chosun Mathematics in the early 18th century

        1592년과 1636년 양대 전란으로 전통적인 조선 산학의 결과는 거의 소멸되어, 17세기 중엽 조선 산학은 새로 시작할 수밖에 없었다. 조선은 같은 시기에 청으로 부터 도입된 시헌력(時憲曆, 1645)을 이해하기 위하여 서양수학에 관련된 자료를 수입하기 시작하였다. 한편 전통 산학을 위하여 김시진(金始振, 1618-1667)은 산학계몽(算學啓蒙, 1299)을 중간(重刊)하였다. 이들의 영향으로 이루어진 조태구(趙泰耉, 1660-1723)의 주서관견(籌書管見)과 홍정하(洪正夏, 1684-?)의 구일집(九一集)을 함께 조사하여 이들이 조선 산학의 발전에 새로운 전기를 마련한 것을 보인다. After disastrous foreign invasions in 1592 and 1636, Chosun lost most of the traditional mathematical works and needed to revive its mathematics. The new calendar system, ShiXianLi(時憲曆, 1645), was brought into Chosun in the same year. In order to understand the system, Chosun imported books related to western mathematics. For the traditional mathematics, Kim Si Jin(金始振, 1618-1667) republished SuanXue QiMeng(算學啓蒙, 1299) in 1660. We discuss the works by two great mathematicians of early 18th century, Cho Tae Gu(趙泰耉, 1660-1723) and Hong Jung Ha(洪正夏, 1684-?) and then conclude that Cho's JuSeoGwanGyun(籌 書管見) and Hong's GuIlJib(九一集) became a real breakthrough for the second half of the history of Chosun mathematics.

        In the winding system, the constant tension control is too important. In this study, we've investigated about a variable PID system as a function of a radius of winding roll. As a result, it was possible to measure a winding roll radius in the real time by making a mathematical model for measuring a winding roll radius. Finally, we've compared PID parameters as a function of winding roll radius after getting PID parameters in terms of the Ziegler & Nichols(ZN) method.

      • 피씨비(PCB) 中毒에 미치는 프라센타(Placenta)의 效果

        This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of placenta on the toxicity of KC-400 in rabbits. Rabbits were treated with 800㎎ of KC-400 in 2㎖ olive oil via IP injection intermittently day after day for a week and were successively administered with 2㎖ of the placenta extracts via I. V. injection twice a day after day as well as with the placenta extracts with 50 ㎎ of vitamin C as well. The results obtained in this experiment were as follows: 1. When the experimental animals were treated with human placenta, there wasn't any alteration of the hematochemical indicators such as RBC, WBC, Hgb, Het, serum Cholesterol, s-GOT, s-GPT, serum Alkaline Phosphatase and Total lipids in serum. 2. According to the experiment of PCB poisoning, while s-C, s-GPT, s-ALP, and s-TL were increased, RBC, WBC, Hgb and Het were decreased during the experimental periods respectively. 3. The placenta extracts normalized the hematochemical indicators of the PCB poisoned animals after one day treated by the placenta extracts. 4. The combined treatment with the placenta extracts and vitamin C was the same effect as the single placenta treatment only; they were not significant in the t-test. 5. The placenta extracts inhibited the serum tyrosinase activity of the rabbits which was induced by PCB in vivo and in vitro respectively. By the combined treatment with the placenta extracts and vitamin C, the activity of tyrosinase was remarkably inhibited in comparison with the single treatment with the placenta alone.

      • 韓國産 복어毒의 毒性學的 硏究

        Tetrodon poisoning also known as fugu poisoning, occurs chiefly in countries surrounding the South China Sea. It has been known for long time that tetrodotoxin which is the purified toxic principle is responsible for the poisoning. Crystalline tetrodotoxin is the most potent of the substances that can interfere with the production of action potentials in excitable cells and also unique in action only on changes in sodium permeability. It was reported that the occurence of tetrodotoxin as well as its distribution in the tissues is varied from species to species. Furthermore, the seasonal variation of toxicity was observed in ovaries of female tetrodon fish. Fugu ocellatus obscurum which is one species of tetrodon families inhabit only around Yellow Sea of Korea and Yantzu-Chiang of China. In this study, tetrodotoxin was extracted and purified from Fugu ocellatus obscurum and the toxicity of the tetrodotoxin was compared with the toxin from other species. In addition, the toxicological and pharmacological tests were performed and the results were as followings. 1. Among the various tissues of Fugu ocellatus obscurum, ovaries, liver and bile juice exhibited the potent toxicity while skin and testis of tetrodon fish showed relatively low toxicity. 2. LD_50 of the crude tetrodotoxin was about 11.8 ㎍/kg and that of the purified toxin. was 11.2㎍/kg 3. Infrared spectrum of the purified tetrodotoxin was almost exactly same pattern as the spectrum of standard tetrodotoxin. 4. The gas chromatographic isolation of TMS, derivatized substance of C_9-base was useful on a OV-101, especially, owing to the selective sensitivity for detection of TSD, the assay of tetrodotoxin in microquantity has been analyzed successfully. Also, tetrodotoxin could identified by means of GC/MS obtained from molecular ion at m/e 407 and fragment at m/e 392 (M-15) due to the C_9-base TMS. 5. The twitch tension of gastrocmemius muscle induced by tibial nerve stimulation was reduced gradually by the cumulative tetrodotoxin (5㎍/kg every 10 minutes) upto 30 minutes, and then the tension was completely abolished. The blood pressure and heart rate, however, showed maximal depression at the final concentration of 10㎍/kg of the tetrodotoxin, and no further depression thereafter. 6. In the isolated rabbit atria, the tetodotoxin produced minimal depression. In the isolated rabbit duodenum, a large doses of tetrodotoxin caused dose-related increase of motility. But pretreatment with tetrodotoxin did not affect the acetylcholine of norepinephrine response in the isolated duodenum.

      • 간경변증 환자에서 도플러 초음파를 이용한 신저항 계수(RI)의 임상적 의의

        Cirrhotic patients may exhibit circulatory derangement and renal dysfunction during the clinical course. Renal dysfunction on cirrhosis can occur without specific causative factors. This functional renal failure in cirrhosis is considered as a consequence of renal vasoconstriction. These alteratons of renal hemodynamics are already present in the early phase of the disease, even in the condition that the conventional kidney function tests are normal. A new method for noninvasive evaluation of arterial tone is duplex Doppler sonography. Among the various sonographic indices proposed, the renal resistive index(RI) is the most widely used for the estimation of intrarenal arteriolar vascular resistence. This study was performed to evaluate the role of Doppler sonography in early detection of renal dysfunction and to assess the clinical significance of RI. In 25 cirrhotic patients without overt kidney failure and ten control subjects, the RI of the acurate artery in both kidneys was measured by Doppler sonography. The mean RI of cirrhotic group was significangly higher than that of control subjects(0,68±0.08 vs -0.62 ±0.05,p<0). Accordiing to Child class, the RI showed increasing tendency from A to C, through witout statistical significance. In this study, the RI was significantly inversely correlated with 24hr urinary sodium amount(r=-0.39, p<0,05)and correlated with serum creatinine(r=6.60,p<0.01). This study indicates that the measurement of RI is a sensitive method to assess intarenal hemodynamics and to detect early changes of the renal dysfunction in cirrhotic patients.

      • 東海岸汽水湖의 陸水學的 硏究

        1. The quality of water and distribution of plankton were investigated of the 6 brackich lakes. Namely Hyang lake, Kwang po lake., Mai lake, Young rang lake, Song ji lake and Hwajin po lake, those which were situated in the east shore during May to December in 1972 and was studied limnological features of those 6 brackish lakes. 2. The average value of Cl'content, hardness and conductivity which had closely influence on the brackish water was measured in those 6 lakes. In the Hwa jin po lake, it found most high value of Cl'content, hardness and conductivity than the other 5 lakes and in the Kwang po lake, it found most lower value of those than the others. 3. From view point of monthly variation of the quality of water, the average value of Cl^-content, hardness and conductivity were a little higher during May and December than during August and October. Compared with the quality of water during May and during Deumber, during May it was substantially higher than during December. In all of the examined lakes except Song ji and Young rang it was substantially higher during August than during September but in Kwang po and Mai lakes, the average value of Cl ̄content, hardness during September were higher than during August. 4. 29 sepecies of zooplankton and 82 species of phytoplankton were found in those 6 brackish lakes and so the total 111 species of plankton were confirmed. The dominant phytoplankton species were Lyngbya majuscula, Cocconeis placentula and Spyrogyra sp. and dominant zooplankton species were Sinbcalamus tenellus, Nauplius of Copepoda and Brachionus calyciflorus in those brackish lakes.

      • 感潮河川水의 陸水學的 硏究 : 漢江下流 金浦大橋附近水域의 水質變動에 관하여 Variation of Water Qualities Near the Kimpo Bridge in the Down Area of Han River

        The variation of water qualities in Kimpo of Han river was surved according to the tidal change and also investigated seasonal and regional variation of water qualities in june on summer season and in cotober on autumn season during 1979. Between the surface and the bottom in this Kimpo of Han river the water qualities didn't found any significant difference and also didn't found any difference in periodically. Considering from the value of Cl^-, SO^-_4^2, Na and total hardness the water qualities in Kimpo of Han river may be influenced by a little of the tidal water. The content of nitrogen, Cl^-, phosphate as a pollutant was foung in autumn on dry seaon higher more than in summer on rainy season. Judging from the seasonal variation of water qualities it was more polluted in autumn on dry season than in summer on rainy season. Especially in the drying season on autumn it was considered to be influenced from the sewverly polluted waste water of Bulgwang river and Anyang river. Compared with the water qualities in each site which have deviced 3 sampling points site 1, 2 and 3. Site 1 is north side of this area in which the waste water of Bulgwang river flow down mainly, site 2 is middle of this ares and site 3 is south side in which the waste water of Anyang river flow down mainly. In generally, the water quslities of all those sampling sites were remarkably polluted and especially in site 3 under the influence of Anyang river was found severly pollution than in site 2. The plankton of saprobic species such as Oscillatoria sp., Vorticella sp., Spirogyra sp. and Mougeotia scalaria, which was indicated for the pollution were found much in this area. So it could recognized that the water quality of Kimpoin Han river were remarkably polluted. Also it found some brackish species of planktons such as Brachionus sp., Sinocalanus tenellus and Alona guttata in this area so it considered to be influenced more or less by tidal water.
