Subfertility in Males: An Important Cause of Bull Disposal in Bovines

        Mukhopadhyay, C.S.,Gupta, A.K.,Yadav, B.R.,Khate, K.,Raina, V.S.,Mohanty, T.K.,Dubey, P.P. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.4

The study had two objectives, namely, to estimate the andrological disorders leading to disposal of Karan Fries (KF), Sahiwal cattle and Murrah buffalo bulls and to study the effect of various factors (species/breeds, season of birth and period of birth) on male reproductive parameters. Records on occurrence of subfertility problems and disposal pattern of bulls maintained at the National Dairy Research Institute herd were collected for 15 years (1991 to 2005). Percentage of bulls producing freezable semen was less in the crossbred cattle (58.46%) as compared to Sahiwal (81.69%) and Murrah bulls (81.05%). Various subfertility traits like poor libido and unacceptable seminal profile were found to be the significant reasons (p<0.01) for culling of the breeding bulls. Inadequate sex drive was the main contributing factor for bull disposal in Sahiwal (22.55%) and Murrah bulls (15.12%) whereas poor semen quality and freezability were most frequently observed in KF bulls (24.29 and 7.29 percent, respectively). Least squares analyses of different male reproductive parameters showed that species/breeds had significant effect (p<0.05) on all traits except for frozen semen production periods (FSPP). Periods of birth were significantly different (p<0.05) for all traits except for semen volume. Age at first semen collection (AFSC), age at first semen freezing (AFSF) and age at disposal (AD) were highest in Murrah, while frozen semen production period (FSPP) and semen production period (SPP) were highest in KF and lowest in Sahiwal. The age at first semen donation and breeding period could be reduced by introducing the bulls to training at an early age. These results revealed a declining trend in AFSC, AFSF, FSPP, SPP and AD, thereby indicating an improvement in reproductive performance over the years. The age at first semen donation in bovines can be reduced by introducing the young male calves to training at an early age, which could increase the dosage of semen obtained from each male.

      • Simultaneous Transitions in Cuprate Momentum-Space Topology and Electronic Symmetry Breaking

        Fujita, K.,Kim, Chung Koo,Lee, Inhee,Lee, Jinho,Hamidian, M. H.,Firmo, I. A.,Mukhopadhyay, S.,Eisaki, H.,Uchida, S.,Lawler, M. J.,Kim, E.-A.,Davis, J. C. American Association for the Advancement of Scienc 2014 Science Vol.344 No.6184

<P><B>Under the Dome</B></P><P>The superconducting transition temperature <I>Tc</I> of copper oxides has a dome-shaped dependence on chemical doping. Whether there is a quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the dome, and whether it is related to the enigmatic pseudogap, has been heavily debated. Two papers address this question in two different families of Bi-based cuprates. In (Bi,Pb)2(Sr,La)2CuO6+δ, <B>He <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 608) found that the Fermi surface (FS) undergoes a topological change as doping is increased, which points to the existence of a QCP at a doping close to the maximum in <I>Tc</I>, seemingly uncorrelated with the pseudogap. <B>Fujita <I>et al.</I></B> (p. 612) studied a range of dopings in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ to find an FS reconstruction simultaneous with the disappearance of both rotational and translational symmetry breaking, the latter of which has been associated with the pseudogap. These findings point to a concealed QCP.</P>

      • MODELING OF A REPULSIVE TYPE MAGNETIC BEARING FOR FIVE AXIS CONTROL INCLUDING EDDY CURRENT EFFECT

        T.Ohji,S.C.Mukhopadhyay,M.I wahara,S.Yamada 전력전자학회 1998 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.- No.-

So far a single-axis controlled repulsive type magnetic bearing system have been designed and fabricated in our laboratory employing the repulsive forces operating between the stator and rotor permanent magnet for levitation. The radial axis is uncontrolled passive one The higher speed of operation is limited due to the vibration along the uncontrolled axis and the increase of control current due to eddy current interference. This paper will discuss a detailed modeling of the repulsive type magnetic bearing system for five axis control including the eddy current effect and the method of reduction of eddy current effect Simulation results using Matlab will be presented.<br/>

Subfertility Problems Leading to Disposal of Breeding Bulls

        Khatun, Marzina,Kaur, Simarjeet,Simarjeet, Simarjeet,Mukhopadhyay, C.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2013 Animal Bioscience Vol.26 No.3

Subfertility problems are encountered frequently in the cattle and buffalo bulls commercially maintained for semen production in dairy farms and under field conditions for natural insemination. Reports are scarce on the incidence of subfertility in breeding bulls, especially in India. The objective of the present study was to assess the incidence of the male reproductive anomalies leading to disposal of bovine bulls at GADVASU dairy farm, Ludhiana, Punjab (India). Data on frequency of various subfertility and disposal pattern of bulls maintained at the dairy farm, GADVASU, were collected for 12 yrs (1999 to 2010) and compiled from different record registers. Percentage of bulls that produced freezable semen (out of reserved ones) was less in cattle (25.641%) as compared to that of buffalo (30.4%). Various subfertility traits like poor libido and unacceptable seminal profile were found to be the significant reasons (p<0.01) for culling of the breeding bulls. Inadequate sex drive and poor semen quality were the main contributing factors for bull disposal in cattle whereas poor semen freezability was most frequently observed in buffalo bulls. All the male reproductive traits were significantly different (p<0.05) for the periods of birth, except for semen volume, initial motility (IM), age at last semen collection (ALSC) and age at disposal. The ages at first and last semen collection as well as freezing (i.e. AFSC, ALSC and AFSF, ALSF, respectively) and age at disposal (AD) were higher in buffalo. The spermatological parameters and semen production period (SPP) were higher in cattle. The age at first semen donation and breeding period could be reduced by introducing the bulls to training at an early age. The results revealed an increasing trend in individual motility (IM) while semen volume, AFSC, AFSF, AD, FSPP, SPP, ALSC and ALSF showed a decreasing, however, not a definite trend, over the periods. The semen donation traits like, AFSF, of the cattle and buffalo bulls could be predicted from the AFSC, using prediction equation derived in the present study.

Examination of the xanthosine response on gene expression of mammary epithelial cells using RNA-seq technology

        ( Shanti Choudhary ),( Wenli Li ),( Derek Bickhart ),( Ramneek Verma ),( R. S. Sethi ),( C. S. Mukhopadhyay ),( Ratan K. Choudhary ) 한국축산학회(구 한국동물자원과학회) 2018 한국축산학회지 Vol.60 No.7

Background: Xanthosine treatment has been previously reported to increase mammary stem cell population and milk production in cattle and goats. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with the increase in stem cell population and milk production remain unclear. Methods: Primiparous Beetal goats were assigned to the study. Five days post-partum, one mammary gland of each goat was infused with xanthosine (TRT) twice daily (2×) for 3 days consecutively, and the other gland served as a control (CON). Milk samples from the TRT and CON glands were collected on the 10th day after the last xanthosine infusion and the total RNA was isolated from milk fat globules (MEGs). Total RNA in MFGs was mainly derived from the milk epithelial cells (MECs) as evidenced by expression of milk synthesis genes. Significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were subjected to Gene Ontology (GO) terms using PANTHER and gene networks were generated using STRING db. Results: Preliminary analysis indicated that each individual goat responded to xanthosine treatment differently, with this trend being correlated with specific DEGs within the same animal’s mammary gland. Several pathways are impacted by these DEGs, including cell communication, cell proliferation and anti-microbials. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into transcriptomic changes in milk producing epithelial cells in response to xanthosine treatment. Further characterization of DEGs identified in this study is likely to delineate the molecular mechanisms of increased milk production and stem or progenitor cell population by the xanthosine treatment.

Investigation of the dielectrically modulated electron hole bilayer tunnel field effect transistor for biomolecule detections

        Palepu Joshna,Patel Shweta,Sinha Sourabh,Mallidi Ranjith Kumar,Naga Karthik Gannina Venkata,Majumdar Budhaditya,Mukhopadhyay S.C.,Kanungo Sayan 한국물리학회 2023 Current Applied Physics Vol.47 No.-

This work investigates a Dielectrically Modulated Electron-Hole Bilayer Tunnel Field Effect Transistor (DM-EHBTFET) architecture for biosensing applications using extensive numerical device simulation. The proposed DM-EHBTFET structure incorporates extended source and drain pockets in the channel to ensure vertical band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) dominated transduction. The underlying device physics and sensing performance of the proposed DM-EHBTFET has been comprehensively analyzed based on the tunneling length sensitivity and drain current sensitivity, respectively. Finally, an extensive comparative performance study has been undertaken against conventional lateral tunneling (LT) and vertical tunneling (VT) based DMTFETs, as well as reported state-of-art DMTFETs and DMFETs. The results demonstrate that the optimized DM-EHBTFET outperforms both conventional LT-/VT- DMTFETs with more than 500 times and 150 times improvements in sensitivity, respectively, over a range of biomolecule specifications, and more than 100 times sensitivity improvement has been observed in DM-EHBTFET over reported DMFETs/DMTFETs for lower biomolecule dielectric constant.
