In recent years, with the global climate change, the intensity, frequency and duration of drought have increased significantly, which has become the main limiting factor for agricultural development in many areas. Glycine betaine (GB) is an effec- tive stress-resistant substance. In this experiment, the effects of the genetic engineering of GB synthesis on photosynthetic apparatus of tobacco under drought stress were studied using transgenic tobacco (T) accumulating GB and wild-type tobacco (K326, WT). Potted tobaccos were subjected to drought stress (controlled irrigation, 25 °C ± 1 °C, a relative humidity: 75–80%) for 9 days, photosynthetic gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll a fluorescence, structure of chloroplast and thyla- koid membrane, and protein function of thylakoid membrane were examined under different drought stress time (days). The results showed that T tobacco could accumulate GB and the accumulated GB improved the resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus to drought stress. Under drought stress, the damage of chloroplast and thylakoid lamellae in T tobacco was less than that in WT tobacco, the accumulation of GB in T tobacco could maintain the stability of thylakoid membrane, improved the unsaturated fatty acid index (IUFA) of thylakoid membrane lipid, increased the contents of digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and decreased the ratio of monogalactosyl diaylglycerol (MGDG) to DGDG. In addition, under drought stress, the accumulation of GB in T tobacco alleviated the photo-inhibition of PSII, and the increase of xanthophyll cycle de-epoxidation may be one of the reasons for the enhancement of PSII function.

Arthropod insects are important pests that feed on leaves and young shoots often causing 10 to 20% loss in tea yield. Evaluation of the effect of major cultural practice such as pruning on the ecological aspect of the arthropod insects and their natural enemies is essential to develop a sound IPM program for organic tea plantation. The impac of summer pruning in mid-May on the arthropod communities was investigated with 3 different pruning intensities,i.e. light, heavy, and no pruning, in Hubei organic tea plantation. Light summer pruning had significant impact on the species and number of tea bush insect pests and their natural enemies within 1 month after pruning, and it lasted by2 months. Heavy pruning had greater impacts. Light pruning postponed the first peak in occurrence of Empoasca vitis (Gothe) for 20 days and the peak of Acaphylla theae Watt for 30 days. Heavy pruning postponed the first peak of Empoasca vitis (Gothe) for 25 days, and completely avoided the damage on tea bush from Acaphylla theae Watt. difference in diversity indices and the ratio of ‘natural enemies/insect pests’ of the arthropod communities on tea bushes by 3 and 4 months after pruning, respectively. The results suggest that light pruning can be used to control insect pests in organic tea plantations with the effect lasting for two months. Heavy pruning had a better control of insect pests than light pruning, but it is hardly to recommend without confirming the balance among sustainability of tea bush vigor in growth and tea yield in the following year, population of natural enemies and the efficacy of insect pest control. The optimum intensity of pruning may differ by individual tea plantation as the age and vigor of tea bush, soil fertility and management of tea bush nutrition differ by each tea plantation.

Background: Advanced pancreatic cancer (APC) is a fatal disease with limited treatment options. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) as adjuvants for radiotherapy (RT) in APC and compare their treatment potentials using network meta-analysis. Methods: We systematically searched three English and four Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to July 25, 2023. The primary outcome was the objective response rate (ORR). Secondary outcomes included Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score, overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs). The treatment potentials of different CHIs were ranked using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). The Cochrane RoB 2 tool and CINeMA were used for quality assessment and evidence grading. Results: Eighteen RCTs involving 1199 patients were included. Five CHIs were evaluated. Compound Kushen injection (CKI) combined with RT significantly improved ORR compared to RT alone (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.21–1.86). Kanglaite (KLT) plus RT (RR 1.58, 95 % CrI 1.20–2.16) and CKI plus RT (RR 1.49, 95 % CrI 1.16–1.95) were associated with improved KPS score compared to radiation monotherapy, with KLT+RT being the highest rank (SUCRA 72.28 %). Regarding AEs, CKI plus RT was the most favorable in reducing the incidence of leukopenia (SUCRA 90.37 %) and nausea/vomiting (SUCRA 85.79 %). Conclusions: CKI may be the optimal choice of CHIs to combine with RT for APC as it may improve clinical response, quality of life, and reduce AEs. High-quality trials are necessary to establish a robust body of evidence. Protocol registration: PROSPERO, CRD42023396828.

Titanium dioxide thin films with silver dopant (Ag-TiO2) were successfully prepared on glass substrates using the thermaloxidation method. Ag-doped titanium films were prepared using direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) magnetron cosputteringsystems. The thermal oxidation temperature and Ag content effects on the phase evolution, microstructure, andphoto catalytic activity of TiO2 film were studied. The crystalline structures and photo catalytic activity of the annealed AgdopedTiO2 films were methodically investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanningelectron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The results exhibited that thethermal oxidation process at 550 oC clearly caused rutile phase formation in the 2.7% Ag-doped TiO2 films directly affectingthe photo catalytic activity. The Ag-doped TiO2 films showed good photo catalytic activity under UV-light radiation, with 59%methylene blue dye degradation rate.

Identification of the gene(s) responsible for floweringtime in Arabidopsis has significant implications. We used theT-DNA insertion library of Arabidopsis thaliana to screen anearly-flowering mutant that exhibits accelerated floweringunder short-day conditions. AP22.65, a novel flowering-timegene in that species, was isolated and identified via genomewalkingand bioinformatics analysis. The flowering time ofAP22.65-complementing plants was similar to that of theCol-0 wild type (WT). Conversely, its overexpression delayedflowering. Consistent with this phenotype, expression ofAP22.65 was decreased in the ap22.65-1 mutant, recoveredin AP22.65-complementing plants, and increased in AP22.65-overexpressing plants. Compared with the WT, expressionlevels of critical genes in different flowering pathways, i.e.,SPY, FLC, GI, CO, FT, and LFY, were down-regulated inloss-of-function mutants. Expression of AP22.65 was distributedin flowers, siliques, rosette leaves, and whole seedlings. Therefore, this gene may be a negative regulator of Arabidopsisflowering.

Background: Shufeng Jiedu capsule has been widely used in China for acute upper respiratory tract infections (AURTIs). The aim of this study was to evaluate its effectiveness and safety for AURTIs. Methods: Randomized controlled trials comparing SFJD with conventional drug for patients with AURTIs were included. Eight databases were searched from their inceptions to February 2021. Data was synthesized using risk ration (RR) or mean difference (MD) with their 95% confidence interval (CI). The primary outcome was resolution time of typical symptoms. Results: Twenty-five RCTs involving 3410 patients were included. SFJD in combination with conventional drug was associated with; in common cold shortening the duration of fever (MD −1.54 days, 95% CI [−2.15,−0.92], I2 = 80%, n = 385, 3 trials) and cough (MD −1.22 days, 95% CI [−1.52, −0.93]); in herpangina, shortening the duration of fever (MD -0.68 days, 95% CI [−1.15, −0.21], I2 = 68%, n = 140, 2 trials) and blistering (MD −0.99 days, 95% CI [−1.23, −0.76], n = 386, 3 trials); in acute tonsillitis and acute pharyngitis shortening the duration of fever (MD −1.13 days, 95% CI [−1.36, −0.90], I2 = 33%, n = 688, 7 trials) and sore throat (MD −1.13 days, 95% CI [−1.40, −0.86], I2 = 84.1%, n = 1194, 10 trials). SFJD also improving their cure rate with a range (1–5 days). No serious adverse events were reported. Conclusion: Low certainty evidence suggests that SFJD appears to shorten the duration of symptoms in AURTIs, improve cure rate and seems safe for application. However, high quality placebo controlled trials are warranted to confirm its benefit.
