        Predation behavior of Podisus nigrispinus on Spodoptera eridania

        The behavior and effective predation time can affect the prey death in pest biological control programs. This work studied the Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) behavior on Spodoptera eridania (Cramer, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) caterpillars, and its implications in case of prey escape. The preference bioassay (B1) aimed to verify the caterpillars body region (anterior: head and thorax; median and posterior) preferred by the predator and its implication in prey mortality. The predation duration bioassay considered the following effective predation times: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 min; the caterpillars were removed after each predation time, to simulate prey escape, and the dead were counted until the seventh day. This experiment was performed in two ways: with randomly selected and not repeated predators (B2); and with the same predators in successive times (B3). The predator preferred to attack the caterpillars anterior region. The caterpillars mortality increased with increasing effective predation time. The mortality was 90% after 64 min under B2. This value was estimated for 16 min under B3. The P. nigrispinus prefers to attack the caterpillars anterior region and mortality of S. eridania caterpillars was favored in predators that have suffered predation interruption.

        Provision of a protein-rich supplement for grazing suckling female beef calves to improve productive performance and metabolic response

        Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the provision of a proteinrich supplement on productive performance, and metabolic profile on grazing suckling female beef calves in tropical conditions during 150 d of experimentation. Methods: Fifty-six Nellore suckling female calves, and their respective dams were distributed in a completely randomised design and made to undergo two treatments as follows: UNS (without supplementation), and SUP (supplementation with 5 g/kg body weight [BW] of a protein supplement). Throughout the experiment, animal performance and metabolic profile were evaluated. Also, ureagenesis and gluconeogenesis were assessed for gene expression. Results: SUP female calves showed a higher voluntary intake (p≤0.03) of the diet components evaluated, digestibility of organic matter (p≤0.02) and microbial nitrogen production (MICN; p≤0.02) compared to UNS female calves. In its turn, serum urea nitrogen (p≤0.01) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (p≤0.03) levels and ureagenesis (p≤0.04) increased in SUP female calves compared to UNS female calves. Blood glucose and triglyceride levels were not affected by supplementation. The average daily gain (ADG) from SUP female calves was higher (p≤0.02) compared with UNS female calves. However, supplementation did not affect the body measures of the animals. Conclusion: In summary, provision of a protein-rich supplement improves the intake and nutrients digestibility, ADG and final BW and increases metabolic indicators of the protein status in grazing suckling female beef calves in tropical conditions.         Effect of official judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses

        This study aimed to verify the effect of judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses during an official tournament in medalists and nonmedalists. Thirty-four male judo athletes participated in an offi-cial judo tournament. Before the first match and immediately after each match, maximum isometric handgrip strength and rate of perceived ex-ertion overall and in specific areas were assessed. Analysis of variance for repeated measures was used to compare variables before the first match and after each match, and t-test was used to compare medalists and nonmedalists with the level of significance set at 5%. Also, effect size (ES) analysis was used. The results showed decrease in handgrip strength in both hands from the third match (P<0.05). The rate of per-ceived exertion (RPE) increased from the first match and remained high over the subsequent matches (P<0.001). A very large effect for nonmed-alist group (ES=3.44) and large effect for medalist group (ES=1.94) was found in the third match compared to prematch. Forearm and fingers were the body regions most cited by athletes in both groups. We con-cluded that an official judo competition induced significant drop in hand-grip strength from the third match and increased the RPE from first match. Medalists seem to have better recovery after the third match compared to nonmedalists.
