Optimization Weighted Matrix of Non-Negative Matrix Factorization for Image Compression

Many methods have been applied in image compression and Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is one of some approach which could be applied in image compression. Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) was a realtively new approach to decompose data into two factors with non-negative entries. This paper shows that the NMF method can be applied in image compression using a model of 2x2 pixels weighted matrix rather than using the model of 200x200 pixels, 10x10 pixels and 4x4 pixels weighted matrix. This paper also shows that the 2x2 Weighted matrix model example of ((65536, 1), (1, 65536)) was the best weighted matrix for NMF image compression. Finally, this research proved that by using the weighted matrix with higher determinant value could gain smaller size compressed image.

Beyond neo-liberalism: Higher education diploma inflation in Taiwan

This paper asserts that neo-liberalist thought has played a profound role in explaining the expansion of higher educational institutions in recent years in Taiwan, and Taiwan has encountered resulting challenges, with an oversupply of diplomas compared to demand. By adopting neo-liberalism as a theoretical approach, this study examines the discourse and legitimization underlying higher education evolution in Taiwan. The rise of neo-liberal thought has accelerated the expansion of a number of universities, but neither neo-liberal thought nor neo-liberalism itself can satisfy the need to explain the changes taking place in the higher education market, especially the value of obtaining a higher education degree in a modernizing society. Therefore, this paper argues that alternative ideologies, for example Post-Fordism and state commercialism should become influential ideologies for managing higher education institutions.

An In vitro Method for the Determination of Microbial Barrier Property (MBP) of Porous Polymeric Membranes for Skin Substitute and Wound Dressing Applications

Barrier property of materials to microbes is an important aspect in many applications like wound dressingsand skin substitutes. Lack of a standard method for the evaluation of microbial barrier property limits the considerationof this important aspect by many bioengineers and biomaterial scientists. Thus, in this study we areintended to develop a standard method for the quantitative assessment of Microbial Barrier Property (MBP) andexpress this in terms of percentage in comparison with a control which resembles a bare wound or a standard existingwound coverage material. In this study, we have evaluated the microbial barrier property of electrospun materialswith different pore spaces and our study showed that this method can be successfully used for the assessment of bacterialbarrier property of materials intended for wound dressing and skin substitute applications. Further, the resultsshowed that the MBP will vary with the test conditions. This methodology can be used to measure the microbialbarrier property of wide range of materials like skin substitute materials, wound dressings, medical textiles and manyother materials where microbial prevention is important. This methodology can also be extended to the specificdetermination of bacterial, fungal or viral barrier property with minor modifications.

Secondhand Smoking Among Children in Rural Households: A Community Based Cross-Sectional Study in Bangladesh

Objectives This study aimed to determine the factors associated with reducing exposure to secondhand smoke among children in households of rural Bangladesh. Methods A cross-sectional study of 410 smokers and non-smokers, in 6 villages of Munshigonj district was conducted. Data were collected randomly using a self-administrative questionnaire. Differences between variables were assessed using Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test (as appropriate). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to investigate associations. All results were presented as unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval. The level of statistical significance was reached when p < 0.05. Results A smoker in the household was determined to be a risk factor associated with exposure of other household members to secondhand smoke (p < 0.001). Higher education, strict implementation of household smoke-free rules, a higher influence of social norms and culture, as well as moderate knowledge on exposure to secondhand smoke were considered as preventive factors associated with exposure of others in the home to secondhand smoke. Conclusion Exposure to secondhand smoke is an extensive and preventable risk factor for children, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke will have a largely positive effect in the community. An effective public health intervention model may reduce secondhand smoking.

Regulation of Wound Healing and Fibrosis by Hypoxia and Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1

Wound healing is a complex multi-step process that requires spatial and temporal orchestration of cellular and non-cellular components. Hypoxia is one of the prominent microenvironmental factors in tissue injury and wound healing. Hypoxic responses, mainly mediated by a master transcription factor of oxygen homeostasis, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), have been shown to be critically involved in virtually all processes of wound healing and remodeling. Yet, mechanisms underlying hypoxic regulation of wound healing are still poorly understood. Better understanding of how the wound healing process is regulated by the hypoxic microen¬vironment and HIF-1 signaling pathway will provide insight into the development of a novel therapeutic strategy for impaired wound healing conditions such as diabetic wound and fibrosis. In this review, we will discuss recent studies illuminating the roles of HIF-1 in physiologic and pathologic wound repair and further, the therapeutic potentials of HIF-1 stabilization or inhibition.

Sinodima jenisi gen. et sp. nov., a new wingless click-beetle from the mountains of Hunan, China (Elateridae: Dendrometrinae: Dimini)

Sinodima gen. nov., a new genus in the click-beetle tribe Dimini Candèze, 1863 from the mountains in Hunan, China, is described and figured here to accommodate S. jenisi sp. nov. The new genus is easily recognizable from all other Dimini by the following combination of characters: short antennomeres II and III; transverse pronotum with inconspicuous anterior angles; arcuate prosternal process; mesoventrite with straight frontal margin and oblique and straight sides; absent hind wings; and absent sclerites or spines in the bursa copulatrix. Additionally, we compare Sinodima gen. nov. with the morphologically similar genera, and discuss the systematic position of this genus within Dimini.

Compensation Techniques for TWTA non-linear intermodulation of Satellite WiBro

OFDM (직교 주파수 분할 다중화) 신호의 높은 PAPR은 시스템의 송신단에서 전력증폭기의 비선형적 특성으로 인해 비선형 왜곡이 불가피하게 발생한다. 이 현상은 대역 내 왜곡과 대역 외 방사를 초래한다. 본 논문에서는 다항식 (polynomial) 모델에 기반한 사전왜곡(pre-distortion) 기법으로 이러한 문제를 보상하는 기법을 제안한다. 비선형 및 역비선형 다항식 모델 추정은 LSE(Least Square Error) 알고리즘으로 수행한다. 또한 시스템의 성능 향상을 위해 피크제거와 클리핑 결합기법을 이용해 OFDM 신호가 전력증폭기의 포화 영역 근처에서 동작함으로써 발생하는 왜곡된 신호의 진폭을 제거한다. The high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system introduces inevitable non-linear distortion in the transmission due to the amplifier non-linear property. This causes both in-band distortion and out of band spectrum re-growth. In this paper we tried to compensate the problem by using polynomial based redistortion. Estimation of both the non-linear and inverse non-linear polynomial is achieved using the Least Square Error (LSE) method. Using these parameters closed form pre-distorter can be easily created. We also used the ‘partial peak cancellation and clipping’ method to remove the high peak present in the non constant amplitude of the OFDM signal responsible to drive the amplifier in near saturation region for better performance of the system
