An Analysis of Sentence Types in Korean and Russian Television Commercials
Rhee Hy-Sook(이희숙) 한국중원언어학회 2001 언어학연구 Vol.- No.5

In this paper, we investigate the Russian proverbs which contain woman indicators or talk about women, and explore metaphorical expressions found in them. We proceed this study within the theoretical frameworks of ‘ontological metaphors’ and ‘the great chain of being metaphor’ that Lakoff & Johnson (1980) and Lakoff & Turner (1989) proposed. We discuss the formal mechanisms used in Russian women proverbs classifying them into ‘animal, plant, thing’ metaphors. In this discussion, we set up some hypothetical situation in order to show how we could apply the theoretical frameworks. We also point out that since in old days Russian people bear negative perspectives on women, they treat women with contempt and look down on them. Women are unintelligent and inferior to men; therefore, they should not involve in social activities. But some proverbs which seem to be formed in Soviet era show that this perspective has been changed to allow women to involve in social activities.

The purpose of this research is to investigate which component compounds of Russian belong to. In order to accomplish this purpose, we first examine Russian compounding phenomena by classifying various kinds of compounds in terms of grammatical categories, syntactic and semantic properties. And we demonstrate the similar and dissimilar properties between compounds and phrases in Russian. Finally, we conclude that the Russian compounds behave like lexical units rather than phrasal ones and that Russian compounding occurs in lexical component, not in syntactic. However, some compounds were originally products of syntactic process which later became compounds through the lexicalization.

This study is a comparative analysis of Russian and Korean idioms related to women by classifying them in terms of lexical and semantic features. Idioms are considered as the reflections of daily life, culture, society, history, geological environment; that is, the mentality of each ethnic group. The purpose of this study is to comprehend aspects of women in two ethnic groups by discovering unique properties of women-related idioms in both languages. Through the comparative analysis of women-related idioms, we better understand how our ancestors look upon the female gender. This study reveals that women in both Russian and Korean society are highly valued when they play a role as obedient wife to husband, quiet housewife, gentle girl, and caring mother. When women show deviant behavior from these ethical norms accepted by the society, they are to blame. Women having characteristics of rude and intemperate behavior, high intellectual ability, unappealing physical appearance, as well as unmarried old women are also reproached. Thus, idioms reflect the social superiority of men over women.

This paper deals with compounding in English and Russian. It is interesting to compare English with Russian, because these languages belong to the same language family, but they have developed in different directions. The properties of compounds are discussed to set up a general schema to represent the structure of the compounds in both languages. In the discussion the differences and similarities of compounds in both languages are mentioned. I classify compounds with respect to the lexical categories, and show that both languages have a similar inventory of compounds. I suggest the removal of some cells from the table by employing the processes which are already known for the different linguistic phenomena. Combining forms in neoclassical compounds are discussed, and it is pointed out that they are bound roots.

This paper attempts to demonstrate new facts of linguistic processes using grammaticalization. It deals with general properties of grammaticalization and aims at a characterization of issues of how linguistic processes operate systematically within a particular language system. I consider the specific cases of grammaticalization with respect to the verb `to give` in Korean and Russian.
