Hart Crane′s Aberrant English

Reed, Brian International Association for Humanistic Studies i 2003 인문언어 Vol.5 No.-

When Hart Crane′s poem cycle The Bridge was published in 1930, a group of influential reviewers accused Crane of immaturity, sentimentality, and lack of focus. They condemned crane′s wayward, fuzzy mysticism as backwards-looking and self-defeating. Even sympathetic critics, such as Harold Bloom, have consistently portrayed Crane′s poetry as the pyrotechnic final fizzle of late romanticism. These persistent, public reservations, however, have not prevented an impressive proliferation in secondary literature concerning Crane since the late 1960s. His promiscuity, alcoholism, erratic behavior, relative poverty, tragic death, and total commitment to art have since earned him the labels of New World Rimbaud and proto-Beat. His colorful career thus explains in part his retrospective fame. Nevertheless, living hard and dying young do not guarantee artistic immortality. This article poses questions as to why Crane has mattered so much to subsequent generations of U.S. readers and what these readers find so compelling in his poetry. The answer, I would argue, lies in Crane′s idiosyncratic use of language. Far from striving for transparency, he writes in an inimitably obstructive, artificial manner. There is something seductive and absurd in his wild use of words here, I would further argue, we discover the reason behind both Crane′s enduring appeal and his supposed inadequacy as a writer. Crane did "torture" syntax, semantics, and conventional associations, not because he saw his unusual language as an eccentric mannerism but because he saw it as a tool in the service of constructing a "myth of America" and reintegrating the human and divine. Understanding thy he considered this to be the case clarifies Crane′s achievement and illuminates why his work still seems so relevant today.

“Some Old Dream of Kingship”: Christopher Brennan’s Poems (1913) and Modernism’s Place

        Reed Brain M. 국제언어인문학회 2013 인문언어 Vol.15 No.3

Australian poetry rarely plays a role in academic narratives about the origins of English-language literary modernism. This essay spotlights Christopher Brennan’s italies (1913) as an example of a text that deserves more widespread attention. Its author recoils from the historical processes pushing Australia to separate from Britain, and he recognizes that the “old dream of kingship,” the colonial imaginary, cannot be sustained intact and inviolate. He responds by withdrawing from the world and self-reflexively? exalting the book as the only place the old magic can survive. Modernism, in this scenario, is born through evasion, displacement, and escape. What saves italies-what insures that it is more than retro-imperial escapism--is its thorough-going disruptive, broken texture. The act of imagination necessary to reject decolonization wrenches language until it becomes strange and new.

Photometric Observations of Eccentric Accretion in Algol-type Binary Stars

Reed, Phillip A. The Korean Space Science Society 2012 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.29 No.2

Some Algol-type interacting binary stars exhibit strange photometric variations that can be phase-dependent and/or secular. This paper discusses the possibility of explaining these observed variations as resulting from an accretion structure eclipsing one or both of the stars. Some previous studies are reviewed and suggestions for future work are made, including the prospective of incorporating data from the Kepler Observatory.

      • Validation of participant screening processes for simulator sickness management

        Reed N.,Diels C.,Parkes A.M. 한국자동차공학회 2008 한국자동차공학회 Symposium Vol.2008 No.9

The incidence of simulator sickness impacts all simulators that purport to provide drivers with a realistic experience. It has symptoms similar to motion sickness but can occur in the absence of physical motion of the observer. TRL was commissioned by the Scottish Executive to train 700 professional commercial vehicle drivers on two full mission truck simulators. Monitoring the incidence and effects of simulator sickness were paramount to the success of the programme. The aim of the driver training was to improve driver safety and fuel efficiency. Drivers on the programme completed a short familiarisation drive before completing two sets of four exercises, spending about an hour in the simulator in total. The simulator recorded drivers’ fuel efficiency, gear changes, speed, and time taken. Drivers also completed questionnaires as part of the training programme, one of which was the simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) proposed by Kennedy, Lane, Berbaum, and Lilienthal (1993), completed before and after driving the simulator. This enabled drivers’ subjective feelings of sickness to be recorded. Drivers rated their experience in the simulator very highly and showed significant improvements in their driving performance. Driver age and previous experience of motion sickness were both correlated with reported sickness level. There was also a significant correlation between drivers’ attitudes to technology and their susceptibility to simulator sickness. The implications of these results for the development of screening processes to reduce the incidence of simulator sickness, consequences for the use of simulators for driver training, and the effectiveness of such a screening questionnaire on a small simulator training programme are discussed.

      • Bcl-2 and other Inhibitors of Apoptosis : Mechanisms of Action

Reed, John C. 가톨릭 의과학연구원 1998 가톨릭 의과학연구원 국제학술대회 Vol.2 No.-

Inhibition of programmed cell death and apoptosis represents a major step in the pathogenesis of most cancers, promoting clonal expasion of neoplastic cells, evasion of immune responses, and resistance to chemo- and radiotherapy. The suppression of cell death pathways can be achieved by alterations in the expression or function of apoptosis-regulating proteins that act in the prosimal, intermediate, or distal portions of the pathway. Examples of each of these will be discussed, including suppression of Fas/CD95-induced death by the Fas-binding protein FAP-1 (proximal), interference with mitochondria-dependent steps of cell death by Bcl-2 (intermediate), and direct suppression of caspases by IAP-family proteins (distal).

      • Whole Earth Telescope observations of the subdwarf B star KPD 1930+2752: a rich, short‐period pulsator in a close binary

        Reed, M. D.,Harms, S. L.,Poindexter, S.,Zhou, A.‐,Y.,Eggen, J. R.,Morris, M. A.,Quint, A. C.,McDaniel, S.,Baran, A.,Dolez, N.,Kawaler, S. D.,Kurtz, D. W.,Moskalik, P.,Riddle, R.,Zola, S.,Østense Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2011 Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Vol.412 No.1

ABSTRACT

KPD 1930+2752 is a short‐period pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star. It is also an ellipsoidal variable with a known binary period of 2.3 h. The companion is most likely a white dwarf and the total mass of the system is close to the Chandresekhar limit. In this paper, we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope (WET) photometric observations during 2003 and a smaller multisite campaign of 2002. From 355 h of WET data, we detect 68 pulsation frequencies and suggest an additional 13 frequencies within a crowded and complex temporal spectrum between 3065 and 6343 μHz (periods between 326 and 157 s). We examine pulsation properties including phase and amplitude stability in an attempt to understand the nature of the pulsation mechanism. We examine a stochastic mechanism by comparing amplitude variations with simulated stochastic data. We also use the binary nature of KPD 1930+2752 for identifying pulsation modes via multiplet structure and a tidally induced pulsation geometry. Our results indicate a complicated pulsation structure that includes short‐period (≈16 h) amplitude variability, rotationally split modes, tidally induced modes and some pulsations which are geometrically limited on the sdB star.

Terms for Bodies of Water in A Posteriori and Mixed Artificial Languages

Alan Reed Libert,Christo Moskovsky 세종대학교 언어연구소 2015 Journal of Universal Language Vol.16 No.2

In this paper we look at words for bodies of water (e.g., words for ‘lake’ and ‘river’) in a large number of a posteriori and mixed artificial languages. After presenting the data and briefly discussing some of them, we analyze some aspects of them, including which meanings seem to be more basic than others. For example, words meaning ‘river’ appear to be unmarked with respect to words meaning similar, but smaller, bodies of water (e.g., ‘brook’), since some artificial languages derive the latter from the former, but no languages in our sample derive the latter from the former. This sort of analysis can be applied to other semantic fields in artificial languages.
