The aim of this study is to identify the potential determinants of household poverty from a range of individual, household and community characteristics. This thesis uses the 2008/2009 household income and expenditure survey (HIES) data to analyse the determinants of household poverty in Fiji. The data was obtained from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics and multivariate analysis using OLS regression was applied in order to understand the degree of correlation and the significance of individual, household and community characteristics for explaining poverty levels in Fiji. Empirical analysis showed some key determinants that have a significant and strong correlation to poverty. Variables such as education level of the household head, household size, and availability of infrastructures such as electricity and income sources. The result indicated that improving levels of education, providing infrastructures such as electricity in rural areas, supporting subsistence agricultural activities to transform to commercial farming, channelling people from informal to formal employment earning regular and stable income, supporting divorced and separated household heads through payments of welfare benefits and reducing family size are some necessary measures in reducing poverty at the household level. These results are important inputs for designing effective and dynamic policies that aim at reducing poverty in Fiji.
