The most widely known form of multifunctional aircraft structure is smart structures for structural health monitoring (SHM). The aim is to provide automated systems whose purposes are to identify and to characterize possible damage within structures by using a network of actuators and sensors. Unfortunately, environmental and operational variability render many of the proposed damage detection methods difficult to successfully be applied. In this paper, an original robust damage detection approach using output-only vibration data is proposed. It is based on independent component analysis and matrix perturbation analysis, where an analytical threshold is proposed to get rid of statistical assumptions usually performed in damage detection approach. The effectiveness of the proposed SHM method is demonstrated numerically using finite element simulations and experimentally through a conformal load-bearing antenna structure and composite plates instrumented with piezoelectric ceramic materials

Four Reinforced Concrete (RC) single span structural walls having various opening sizes and locations were constructed and tested under lateral reversed cyclic loading at the structural laboratory of Kyoto University. These specimens were scaled to 40% and represented the lower three stories of a sixstoried RC building. The main purposes of the experimental tests were to evaluate the shear behavior and to identify the influence of opening ratios on the cracks distribution and shear strength of RC structural walls. The shear strength of the specimens was estimated by combining the shear strength of structural wall without openings and the reduction factor that takes into account the openings. Experimental and analytical results showed that the shear strength was different depending on the loading direction due to opening locations. A two-dimensional finite element analysis was carried out to simulate the performance of the tested specimens. The constructed finite elements model simulated the lateral load-drift angle relations quite well.
Visual Thinking Tools in Enhancing ESL Students' Writing Ability
Rafik-Galea, Shameem The English Teachers Association in Korea 2005 영어어문교육 Vol.11 No.2
Writing is a difficult skill for many people, both for children and adult alike and generally most people find it difficult to write down their thoughts effectively. Numerous studies have revealed that teachers find it frustrating to teach writing and many failed to help ESL students develop their writing ability. The theoretical emphasis on process oriented writing instruction has, in general brought about positive changes in the way writing is taught and has become widely accepted in the teaching of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL). Although the interpretation and implementation of the process approach varies considerably from instructor to instructor, nevertheless, the emphasis on process writing has brought about significant and beneficial changes in teachers' orientations to writing. Despite the theoretical recognition of writing as a recursive process, many ESL/EFL classrooms continue to teach writing as a linear sequence of planning, pre-writing, writing, revising and editing and has not enhanced ESL/EFL students writing ability to the desired level. There appears to be a missing link in helping students to crystallize their thoughts before writing. Studies have shown that incorporating visual thinking tools into the process approach of ESL writing can enhance students' ability to write. This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study on the effects of using visual thinking tools in enhancing ESL students writing.
Enhancing Writing Skills Through Portfolios
Rafik-Galea, Shameem The English Teachers Association in Korea 2004 영어어문교육 Vol.9 No.2
College going students who are non-native speakers of English enrolled in English language programmes are not acquiring the needed academic writing skills. Many of these students do not have positive attitudes towards writing, thus forcing language instructors to look for ways of motivating students to write in order to improve writing skills. This action research project investigates the use of portfolio writing to improve writing ability among pre-university students. Research on the use of portfolio writing suggests that it is a useful way for developing interest in writing and for developing effective writing skills over a period of time. Portfolios support the best thinking in composition pedagogy in that it encourages process writing. Although the portfolio is considered a writing product, as a whole it is evidence of the students writing process. An important feature in using portfolios is that students are able to focus on their writing without constantly worrying about grades. Instructors have noticed that students make greater improvement in their writing when their focus is shifted from punitive feedback through letter grades to constructive feedback in the form of suggestions for further revision. This paper describes the use of writing portfolios as an effective means of teaching writing. The findings revealed that writing portfolios helped develop confidence in writing and decreased anxiety towards writing. (217 words)

Background Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the airways narrowing, caused by a hypersensitivity reaction. Recently, an elevation of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an indicator of inflammation, has been associated with disease severity such as asthma. Cytokines in the pathogenesis of asthma cause an increase in neutrophils. The aim of this research is to know the relationship between neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and the severity of an asthma attack at the General Hospital of Dr. Soedirman Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia. Method This research is using a cross-sectional study Method with total subjects consisted of 25 pediatric patients in General Hospital Dr. Soedirman Kebumen from January 2018 until December 2019. Subjects were male and female, aged 1-17 years old who only had a diagnosis of bronchial asthma and no comorbidities and had complete medical record data. The data taken were the severity of the asthma attack (mild-moderate, severe, and asthmatic status) based on GINA diagnostic criteria and the patient's neutrophil and lymphocyte data to calculate the NLR. The data obtained then analyzed using statistical analysis software chi-square type. Result The Results shown that there were 17 subjects with mild-moderate asthma attacks and the mean of the NLR value is 5.23±1.14, there were 4 subjects with severe asthma attacks and the mean of the NLR value is 19.33±5.01, there were 2 subjects with asthmatic status and the mean of the NLR value is 8.3±0.15. The Results of statistical analysis showed that there was a relationship between NLR and the severity of asthma attacks in the subjects with p-value <0.05 (p=0.41). Conclusion There is a relationship between the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the severity of asthma attack in the subjects with p-value <0.05.

Using a rare-earth metal-based catalytic system, methyl oleate has been transformed into corresponding keto-derivatives via a Meinwald rearrangement of epoxidized methyl oleate (EMO). YCl3 efficiently carried out ring-opening of EMO under solvent-free conditions within a short reaction time. Only 3 wt% of YCl3 is enough to deliver selectively keto-products in excellent yields without requiring any column purifications. Also, this catalytic approach is very effective with a representative set of biobased unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Overall, this effective synthesis of keto-derivatives promises novel materials with high biobased content and is very useful for industries of today and the future.
