Prediction of SST for Operational Ocean Prediction System

A practical algorithm for prediction of the sea surface temperatures (SST)from the satellite remote sensing data is presented in this paper. The fluctuations of SST consist of deterministic normals and stochastic anomalies. Due to large thermal inertia of sea water, the SST anomalies can be modelled by autoregressive or Markov process, and its near future values can be predicted provided the recent values of SST are available. The actual SST is predicted by superposing the pre-known SST normals and the predicted SST anomalies. We applied this prediction algorithm to the NOAA AVHRR weekly SST data for 18 years (1981-1998) in the seas adjacent to Korea (115-$145^{\circ}E$, 20-$55^{\circ}N$). The algorithm is applicable not only for prediction of SST in near future but also for nowcast of SST in the cloud covered regions.

Antioxidant Activity of Collagen Extracts Obtained from the Skin and Gills of Oreochromis sp.

Efforts aimed at reduction of fishing waste generated during the evisceration and filleting are scarce. The fishing waste is used in the production of low value-added products, such as flours or silages. It is important to visualize an alternative and profitable use of this waste, as it constitutes a serious environmental problem. This research determined the antioxidant properties of collagenous extracts of skin and galls of Oreochromis sp. The raw materials were characterized by proximal chemical analysis. Three treatments were applied to extract the collagen: salt-soluble collagen, acid-soluble collagen (ASC), and pepsin-hydrolyzed collagen (PHC). The collagenous fractions were hydrolyzed (0.1% pepsin). The recovered collagen yield and antioxidant activity were determined to hydrolyzed collagen (HC) and nonhydrolyzed collagen (NHC). The ASC skin showed the highest extraction yield (3.02%). For galls, only the PHC extraction was feasible (0.16%). Antioxidant analysis of NHC did not reveal radical scavenging activities. HC displayed a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl %RSA of 22.58 (ASC skin) and 10.34% (PHC galls), and a 2,2′-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] %RSA of 30.40% (PHC skin) and 29.43% (PHC galls), respectively. The ASC skin and PHC gall extracts exhibited 94.40% and 81.54% in ferric-reducing antioxidant power, and 43.63 and 38.08 μg ascorbic acid equivalents per milli liter for total antioxidant capacity, respectively. The collagen extracts showed %RSA and chelation of pro-oxidant metal ions. Different mechanism of antioxidant action was identified for the extracts: radical scavengers for HC and metal ion chelators for NHC. In conclusion, red tilapia skin collagen is recommended as an active ingredient of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, or functional foods, for the identified bioactive properties.
Effect of a Soluble Cocoa Fiber-Enriched Diet in Zucker Fatty Rats

The effects of a soluble cocoa fiber (SCF) were studied in Zucker fatty rats. Two groups of Zucker fatty rats were fed the following diets: standard diet and 5% SCF-enriched diet. A group of Zucker lean rats fed the standard diet was used for results comparison with obese Zucker animals. Solid and liquid intakes, body weight, plasma glucose, lipid profile, and systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were recorded weekly. At the end of the experimental period insulin was determined, and fat apparent digestibility (FAD) and insulin resistance were calculated. The Zucker fatty rats fed 5% SCF-enriched diet showed less weight gain and food intake than those fed the standard diet. The group fed the fiber-enriched diet showed lower values of the total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and triglyceride levels than the standard group. FAD was also lower in the fiber group. Both SBP and DBP were decreased. In addition, SCF reduced plasma glucose and insulin, and as a consequence the insulin resistance was also decreased. Our data demonstrate that SCF resulted in an improvement of the studied risk factors associated with cardiometabolic disorders.

Apparently no research has been done to examine the effects of plyometric training on the agility of college badminton players. Thus, this study examined the effects of 6-weeks plyometric training programme on the agility of college students. A total of 42 college co-curriculum badminton students, aged 18-20 years participated in this study. Cluster sampling was used to select the two groups of students and subsequently the groups were randomly assigned to the control (n=23, male=7, female=16) and experimental (n=19, male=8, female=11) groups. Both groups were trained according to the compulsory co-curriculum programme once a week for six weeks. Additional plyometric training was provided to the experimental group. Illinois Agility Test (IAT) was used to determine the effect of plyometric training during pre and post intervention on agility. Control and experimental groups showed significant improvement in the mean agility scores during the post test as compared with the pre test (t=-2.48; p=0.001; and t=-2.89; p<0.001 respectively). The experimental group exhibited greater improvement (7%) as compared to the control group (2.5%) (p=0.012) based on their pre test mean scores. In short, plyometric training improved the agility of college co-curriculum badminton players and plyometric training is recommended for training in improving agility in other sports as well.

A series of α-terthiophenc derivatives were prepared and their protein kinase C inhibitory activity were evaluated. The aldehyde derivatives were most potent inhibitors (IC(50) < 1 ㎛). α-Terthiophene monoaldehyde was inactive in the inhibitions of protein kinase A, mitogen activated protein kinase and protein tyrosine kinase.
