Forsythia suspensa Extract Has the Potential to Substitute Antibiotic in Broiler Chicken

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the potential for Forsythia suspensa extract (FSE) to substitute for antibiotic in broiler chicken. First, a well-diffusion assay procedure and a 2-fold dilution method were used to determine the bacteriostatic activity of FSE on Escherichia coli K88, staphylococcus aureus, and salmonella was assayed. An inhibitory effect of FSE was observed on the growth of these bacteria. This effect seems to be dose depended, which disappeared after 25.00, 12.50, 1.56 mg/ml. Second, a 42-d trial with 252 broiler chickens (d 1, $38.7{\pm}1.1$ g BW) was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of FSE in broiler chicken. The feeding program consisted of a starter diet from d 1 to 21 and a finisher diet from d 22 to 42. Dietary treatments included were: i) NC: negative control fed a corn-soybean meal based diet; ii) PC: positive control group fed based diet with chlortetracycline; and iii) FC: a test group fed with 100 mg FSE/kg diet. In this study growth performance did not differ among treatments during the starter period. However, dietary supplemental chlortetracycline and FSE increased (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) compared with NC during the finisher and overall phase. Apparent digestibility of calcium on d 21, digestibility of energy and calcium on d 42 of FC was greater (p<0.05) than NC. Moreover, cecal Escherichia coli counts for birds from FC were lower (p<0.05) than NC. Dietary FSE supplementation also improved (p<0.05) villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratios in both duodenum and ileum and decreased (p<0.05) crypt depth in the duodenum. Duodenum villus height and villus height to crypt depth ratio in both duodenum and ileum from the FC group were also greater (p<0.05). Serum growth hormone and IGF-1 were not influenced by different treatments. Apparently, FSE has the potential to substitute for antibiotic in broiler chicken.
Effect of Metallic Slab Cladding on Photonic Crystal Band Structures

We study the effect of a metal cladding on the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. In this paper, we present some photonic band structures of square and triangular lattice-hole-patterned photonic crystal slabs. The results for the perfect electric conductor (PEC) or the metal cladding cases are shown. We used both the plane wave expansion (PWE) method and the nite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and we compared them to each other. We explain how each cladding changes the band structure and we suggest the amount of change, especially at the Γ point in the photonic band diagram.
Optical Properties of Tunable Metalic Nano-Tubes by Using an Interband Transition

The optical properties of a tunable metal-coated nano polymer are described in this study. The optical properties of metal-coated nano-polymer tubes are calculated by using a Finite- Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. To calculate the metalic part in the tube, we used Drude's model with the FDTD method. To obtain the optical properties, we also applied the optical theorem to the FDTD method. The optical properties of metals come from their optical constants and plasmonic structure. We calculate two kinds of metals, nickel and silver, to show the tunable optical properties. Also, we analyze the tubes by changing the thicknes of the metal coating. We verify tunable optical properties for silver by using an interband transition.

<P>Nanostructures of magnesium (Mg) doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) were successfully deposited on conducting fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass plates by cathodic electrochemical deposition method at different potentials and temperature conditions. The deposited samples were characterized by XRD and SEM techniques to confirm their structures, morphologies and optical properties. These measurements show that Mg doped ZnO has a wurtzite structure and that the strongest intensity of the (002) peak is found at 60 degrees C and -1.0 V. Tunable transmittance of Mg doped ZnO has a band gap energy from 3.45 eV to 3.82 eV, which is the direct evidence of doping.</P>

Background/Aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with diabetes. The cumulative impact of both diseases synergistically increases risk of adverse events. However, present population analysis is predominantly conducted with reference to non-NAFLD individuals and has not yet examined the impact of prediabetes. Hence, we sought to conduct a retrospective analysis on the impact of diabetic status in NAFLD patients, referencing non-diabetic NAFLD individuals. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018 was used. Hepatic steatosis was defined with United States Fatty Liver Index (US-FLI) and FLI at a cut-off of 30 and 60 respectively, in absence of substantial alcohol use. A multivariate generalized linear model was used for risk ratios of binary outcomes while survival analysis was conducted with Cox regression and Fine Gray model for competing risk. Results: Of 32,234 patients, 28.92% were identified to have NAFLD. 36.04%, 38.32% and 25.63% were non-diabetic, prediabetic and diabetic respectively. Diabetic NAFLD significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, chronic kidney disease, all-cause and CVD mortality compared to non-diabetic NAFLD. However, prediabetic NAFLD only significantly increased the risk of CVD and did not result in a higher risk of mortality. Conclusions: Given the increased risk of adverse outcomes, this study highlights the importance of regular diabetes screening in NAFLD and adoption of prompt lifestyle modifications to reduce disease progression. Facing high cardiovascular burden, prediabetic and diabetic NAFLD individuals can benefit from early cardiovascular referrals to reduce risk of CVD events and mortality.
