Supporting participation of Asia-Pacific SMEs in global value chains

Masato Abe,Marc Proksch 한국무역학회 2017 Journal of Korea trade Vol.21 No.2

Purpose – Global value chains (GVCs) have become increasingly influential in determining the patterns of international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) and in providing growth opportunities in Asia and the Pacific while small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been an engine of economic development. The purpose of this paper is to provide effective development strategies and relevant policy approaches to facilitate dynamic insertion of SMEs into GVCs. Design/methodology/approach – This paper was developed based on various Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific works in the fields of the development of SMEs and GVCs in Asia and the Pacific. Sectoral case studies on agribusiness, garment/apparel, automotive and electronics illustrate SMEs’ effective integration into GVCs. Findings – SMEs face multiple obstacles and challenges which may limit the benefits derived from the development of GVCs in Asia and the Pacific. Policymakers are suggested to design and implement appropriate strategies and polices in order to facilitate the development of SMEs under the ongoing globalization. Research limitations/implications – This paper is mainly based on existing policy papers which were developed by the United Nations Secretariat, its specialized agencies and others. Further empirical and policy studies are expected to be conducted in order to deepen the understanding of the present topics and to come up with practical policy options. Practical implications – Policymakers are suggested to consider strategies and policy options recommended by this paper for their works on SME development and trade and investment promotion. Originality/value – This is the first policy paper which proposes a comprehensive framework for SMEs’ effective participation in GVCs, specifically suggesting seven approaches, namely, SME development; trade policy; behind-the-border and cross-border trade facilitation; regional integration frameworks; FDI promotion; SME clusters; and national innovation system.

Dietary Supplementation with Specific Collagen Peptides Has a Body Mass Index-Dependent Beneficial Effect on Cellulite Morphology

        Michael Schunck,Vivian Zague,Steffen Oesser,Ehrhardt Proksch 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.12

In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, we investigated the efficacy of specific bioactive collagen peptides (BCP) on the cellulite treatment of normal and overweight women. In total, 105 women aged 24–50 years with moderate cellulite were randomized to orally receive a daily dosage of 2.5 g BCP or a placebo over 6 months. The degree of cellulite was evaluated before starting the treatment and after 3 and 6 months of intake. In addition, skin waviness, dermal density, and the length of subcutaneous borderline were assessed. BCP treatment led to a statistically significant decrease in the degree of cellulite and a reduced skin waviness on thighs (P < 0.05) in normal weight women. Moreover, dermal density was significantly improved (P < 0.05) compared to placebo. The subcutaneous borderline showed a significant shortening after BCP intake compared to the beginning of the study, indicating cellulite improvement, but the data failed to reach statistical significance compared to placebo. The efficacy of BCP treatment was also confirmed in overweight women, although the impact was less pronounced in comparison with women of normal body weight. The results of the study demonstrated that a regular ingestion of BCP over a period of 6 months led to a clear improvement of the skin appearance in women suffering from moderate cellulite. Based on the current data, it can be concluded that a long-term therapy with orally administered BCP leads to an improvement of cellulite and has a positive impact on skin health.

Two new sesquiterpenoids from endophytic fungus J3 isolated from Mangrove Plant Ceriops tagal

        Yan-Bo Zeng,Hai-Gang Gu,Wen-Jian Zuo,Li-Li Zhang,Hong-Jin Bai,Zhi-Kai Guo,Peter Proksch,Wen Li Mei,Hao Fu Dai 대한약학회 2015 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.38 No.5

Two new sesquiterpenoids, named 2a-hydroxyxylaranolB (1) and 4b-hydroxyxylaranol B (2), togetherwith a known diterpenoid 3,4-seco-sonderianol (3) wereisolated from the fermentation of endophytic fungus J3 ofCeriops tagal. Their structures were elucidated based onspectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR(HMQC, 1H-1H COSY and HMBC). All compounds wereevaluated for their cytotoxic activities by MTT method, and compound 3 exhibited cytotoxic activities againstK562, SGC-7901, and BEL-7402 cell lines.

      • Protein Kinase and HDAC Inhibitors from the Endophytic Fungus <i>Epicoccum nigrum</i>

        El Amrani, Mustapha,Lai, Daowan,Debbab, Abdessamad,Aly, Amal H.,Siems, Karsten,Seidel, Carole,Schnekenburger, Michael,Gaigneaux, Anthoula,Diederich, Marc,Feger, Daniel,Lin, Wenhan,Proksch, Peter American Chemical Society and American Society of 2014 Journal of natural products Vol.77 No.1

<P>A chemical investigation of the endophytic fungus <I>Epicoccum nigrum</I> isolated from leaves of <I>Mentha suaveolens</I> collected in Morocco resulted in the isolation of five new polyketides, epicocconigrones A and B (<B>1</B> and <B>2</B>), 3-methoxyepicoccone B (<B>3</B>), 3-methoxyepicoccone (<B>4</B>), and 2,3,4-trihydroxy-6-(methoxymethyl)-5-methylbenzaldehyde (<B>5</B>), together with five known compounds (<B>6</B>–<B>10</B>). The structures of the new compounds were unambiguously determined by extensive analysis of the 1D and 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic data. Compounds <B>1</B> and <B>10</B> showed potent inhibition of at least 15 protein kinases with IC50 values ranging from 0.07 to 9.00 μM. Moreover, compounds <B>1</B> and <B>10</B> inhibited histone deacetylase (HDAC) activities with IC50 values of 9.8 and 14.2 μM, respectively. A preliminary structure–activity relationship is discussed. Interestingly, compounds <B>1</B> and <B>10</B> exert mainly cytostatic effects in human lymphoma RAJI and U-937 cell lines.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jnprdf/2014/jnprdf.2014.77.issue-1/np4005745/production/images/medium/np-2013-005745_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/np4005745'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
