<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Microencapsulation of phenolic extracts of <I>Clitoria ternatea</I> (CT) petal flower extract through extrusion method of alginate with calcium chloride (CaCl2) was studied. Encapsulation efficiency varied in the range from 74.17 ± 0.83% to 84.87 ± 0.29% depending on the percentage of CT (5–20%), alginate (1–2%), and CaCl2 (1.5–5%). The results showed that the optimized condition of CT-loaded alginate beads (CT beads) was as follows: 10% CT, 1.5% alginate, and 3% CaCl2 (w/v). Under this condition, the maximal antioxidant capacity of 11.76 ± 0.07 mg gallic acid equivalent/gbeads and the encapsulation efficiency of 84.83 ± 0.40% were obtained. The microencapsulation was found to have smooth surface shape with a particle size distribution of 985 ± 0.53 μm and improve the thermal stability with 188 °C. There was the absence of chemical interactions between CT and alginate as verified by using FT-IR. The microencapsulation of CT significantly retains higher amount of polyphenols and improves antioxidant capacity, pancreatic α-amylase inhibitory activity, and bile acid binding after the gastrointestinal digestion. This study provides a novel food-grade encapsulation formulation to improve the stability as well as the biological activity of plant polyphenols.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> CT was encapsulated in calcium alginate beads. </LI> <LI> Encapsulated CT retained polyphenols and antioxidant activity. </LI> <LI> Encapsulating CT increased pancreatic α-amylase inhibitory activity after digestion. </LI> <LI> Encapsulating CT increased bile acid binding after digestion. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

The present study was performed to reveal the current status and risk factors of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in the villages of Kenethao district, Xayaburi Province, Lao PDR. Fecal specimens were collected and examined for S. stercoralis using Koga-agar plate culture technique. Among 516 individuals, the prevalence of S. stercoralis and hookworm infection was 44.2% and 17.1%, respectively. Co-infection was detected in 13.2% of the cases. The prevalence did not significantly differ between males and females (P=0.193). However, the prevalence of S. stercoralis infection increased significantly with age (P=0.041). Of the risk factors examined, both performing farming activities (P=0.001) and walking barefoot when going outside of the house (P=0.003) showed significant correlations with S. stercoralis infections. Our results suggest that S. stercoralis is highly endemic in this area. The National Helminth Control Program of Lao PDR should take actions to control S. stercoralis infection. In addition, provision of health education about the benefits of wearing shoes would be important for reducing infection in the study area. Moreover, the application of high-sensitivity diagnostic approaches is needed to obtain the true impact of S. stercoralis infections in all rural communities in order to provide surveillance activities in Lao PDR.
Hydrodynamics and mass transfer behavior in multiple draft tube airlift contactors

draft tube configuration was demonstrated to give a better gas-liquid mas transfer when compared with a conventionalone-draft-tube system. The airlift with a larger number of draft tubes allowed a higher level of buble entrainment, which rendered a high downcomer gas holdup. This resulted in a higher overall gas holdup in the contactor. Liquidvelocity was also enhanced by increasing the number of draft tubes. The ratio between downcomer and riser cross sec-tional areas, Ad/Ar, had a great effect on the system performance, where a larger Ad/Ar led to a lower downcomer liquidvelocity and smaller quantity of gas bubbles being dragged into the downcomer. This resulted in low gas holdup, andconsequently, low gas-liquid interfacial mas transfer area, which led to a reduction in the overall volumetric mas trans-fer coeficient. The presence of salinity in the system drastically reduced the bubble size and subsequently led to anenhancement of gas entrainment within the system. As a result, higher gas holdups and gas-liquid interfacial area wereobserved, and hence, a higher rate of gas-liquid mass transfer was obtained.

Objective: The long interspersed elements (LINE-1, L1s) are a group of genetic elements found in large numbers in the human genome that can translate into phenotype by controlling genes. Growing evidence supports the role of epigenetic in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the DNA methylation levels in LINE-1 in a tissue-specific manner using cumulus cells from patients with PCOS compared with normal controls. Methods: The study included 19 patients with PCOS and 22 control patients who were undergoing controlled ovarian hyperstimulation. After oocyte retrieval, cumulus cells were extracted. LINE-1 DNA methylation levels were analysed by bisulfite treatment, polymerase chain reaction, and restriction enzyme digestion. The Connection Up- and Down-Regulation Expression Analysis of Microarrays software package was used to compare the gene regulatory functions of intragenic LINE-1. Results: The results showed higher LINE-1 DNA methylation levels in the cumulus cells of mature oocytes in PCOS patients, 79.14 (${\pm}2.66$) vs. 75.40 (${\pm}4.92$); p=0.004, but no difference in the methylation of cumulus cells in immature oocytes between PCOS and control patients, 70.33 (${\pm}4.79$) vs. 67.79 (${\pm}5.17$); p=0.155. However, LINE-1 DNA methylation levels were found to be higher in the cumulus cells of mature oocytes than in those of immature oocytes in both PCOS and control patients. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the epigenetic modification of LINE-1 DNA may play a role in regulating multiple gene expression that affects the pathophysiology and development of mature oocytes in PCOS.

A synthetic peptide was prepared based on the antigenic region of Paragonimus westermani pre-procathepsin L, and its applicability for immunodiagnosis for human paragonimiasis (due to Paragonimus heterotremus) was tested using an ELISA to detect IgG4 antibodies in the sera of patients. Sera from other helminthiases, tuberculosis, and healthy volunteers were used as the references. This peptide-based assay system gave sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values of 100%, 94.6%, 96.2%, 100%, and 88.9%, respectively. Cross reactivity was frequently seen against the sera of fascioliasis (75%) and hookworm infections (50%). Since differential diagnosis between paragonimiasis and fascioliasis can be easily done by clinical presentation and fascioliasis serology, this cross reaction is not a serious problem. Sera from patients with other parasitoses (0-25%) rarely responded to this synthetic antigen. This synthetic peptide antigen seems to be useful for development of a standardized diagnostic system for paragonimiasis.
