Pastoral Counseling with Survivors of Family Violence
Vol.36 No.-
In this article I have tried to give some insight into the struggles of persoms who have experienced abuse in their families, the effects of this work on us as pastoral counselors, and the theological issues that are part of the healing work. Survivors in pastoral who seek help from pastoral counselors face denial and dissociation, shame and guit, anger, and despair and depression, As pastoral counselors, we also have the same feelings and we are forced to dig down deep into our own faith. What kind of world has God created? What are the depths of human sin and evil? How much suffering can persons endure? And where is the hope for healing and a better future? All of these are theological questions. Our work can be inspiring for us. Karen was an example her own father, and her abuse was made worse by the techings and practices of the church. But through the skills of a therapist and the prayers and support of ordinary Christian laypersons, she experienced healing. Now I know that others can have the same experiences. When I feel overwhelmed by another story of horror, I remember Karen, and my memory helps me to believe that others can find healing also. I praise God that help is available for survivors of violence through pastoral counselors who live the resurrection faith.
Domestic Violence and Pastoral Counseling
Vol.38 No.-
Mark 5:24-34 tells the story of a woman with a flow of blood who came to Jesus for healing. Many preachers have used this story to illustrate Jesus compassion for the poor, his miraculous power of healing, and the power of the woman's faith. Some have used it to show that Jesus challenged the sexist taboos and treated women with equal respect to men. Today I want us to focus just on Verse 26: "She had endured much under many physicians and had spent all that she had: and she was no better, but rather grew worse."
Preventing Family Violence: An Educational Model
2004 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.5
The author explores the emotional and intellectual issues of teaching theological students about prevention of family violence. One way to deepen the experience of learning is to engage the students in teaching others. This article presents one model of using psychodrama to help a group of students present the issues within the context of an educational experience for students outside the classroom This model can be adapted for other teaching situations where emotional understanding is important alongside intellectual growth.
Gender, Violence and Process Theology
Vol.2008 No.
Gender violence is systematic abuse of women and children because of their subordinate status in patriarchal societies. Families and intimate relationships have epidemic levels of sexual and physical abuse in many societles.u The lecture includes two case studies and discussion of five principles of Process Theology. I argue that social agencies and churches that understand themselves in relationship to these five principles will be more compassionate and just in their responses to survivors and perpetrators of violence against women and children.
