        김정포,오경희 釜山外國語大學校 1998 外大論叢 Vol.19 No.1

International strategic alliances are currently hailed as an effective growth strategy in an era of international market and multinational corporation. The strategic implication is that it allows a firm to specialize in those activities of the value chain that are essential to its competitive advantage, reaping all the benefit of specialization. Other activities are then entrusted to members of the alliance that perform them more efficiently than the core firm, since they specialize in these activities. Simultaneously, all the firms enjoy the added flexibility of not having fixed commitments to activities that are not essential to their primary operations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of critical success in international strategic alliance, and to analyze the main factors which are affecting the successful implementation of strategic alliances by Korean firms. Identifying the reliable variables which are introduced by exist literature review; The previous study on determinants of successful in strategic alliance can be classified into 47 variables. Questionnaires were mailed or faxed to the random selected firms in Korea those who have had a strategic alliance relationship with foreign firms. Statistical dat were analyzed to test factor analysis by using SPSS windows package. Eventually, we had 17 items and a stable factor structure. Also the loadings on all items were ≥0.70. The results of empirical study are as follows ; (1) Factor 1 contains 5 items that deal with issues related to partner congruity. (2) Factor 2 contains 3 items that describe the concerns linked with governmental policies. (3) Factor 3 contains 3 items that refer to issues related to partner characteristics. (4) Factor 4 holds 3 items that refer to issues related to relationship characteristics. (5) Factor 5 contains 3 items that deal with issues related to partner evaluation.

This study examines the effect of diversification strategy on the performance of Korean FDI companies and identifies the relationship between diversification strategy and international joint ventures(IJVs). In this study, diversification is categorized by product and geographical diversification and performance is measured by profitability(ROA, ROE, ROS). To accomplish this purpose, this study reviewed various concepts of diversification strategy and relationships between diversification strategy and performance, diversification strategy and IJVs from previous studies. Based on these literature reviews, this study established five hypotheses. The data of profitability was collected in the financial statements. The collected data were statistically analysed by T-test and ANOVA method. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1. With respect to geographical diversification strategy, the profitability of Korean FDI firms with high diversification was greater than the profitability of firms with low diversification. 2. With respect to the degree of product diversification strategy, the profitability of firms with diversification was greater than those firms with low diversification. 3. The effect of geographical diversification strategy on FDI firm performance was greater than that of product diversification strategy on perfermance. 4. With respect to relationship between diversification strategy and IJV, the results showed that, compared with the firms of related diversification strategy, the firms of unrelated diversification strategy preferred IJV mode of entry into foreign country.

Obtaining sales outside their own domestic market is an objective of many small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) and their governments. Despite the purported benefits of internationalization for smaller firms, the extent literature holds a relatively negative view of their prospects. It has been argued that, compared with large firms, SMEs are disadvantaged in entering and expanding sales in international markets because they lack the necessary skills and resources. Moreover, young firms are seen as being disadvantaged further because they lack the experience and credibility that a domestic track record provides. These arguments have recently been challenged. The use of size and age variables as proxies for more meaningful constructs such as knowledge of foreign markets, management skill, technical ability, entrepreneurship has been criticized in favour of measuring these other constructs directly. Furthermore, the emergence of firms that are international from start-up and that enter and exit foreign markets in a flexible manner calls into question the relevance of a domestic track record as a consistent predictor. In newer and smaller firms, compared with large firms, the skills and knowledge of the management team, technical ability, entrepreneurship are likely to be more predictive of, and influential on, patterns of internationalization. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship among management team characteristics, technical capability and the internationalization of SMEs. The empirical research are based on a sample of 32 Korean software products firms. Statistical data are analyzed to test correlation and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS PC+ package. The results of empirical study are as follows ; (1) The results of regression to the use of foreign strategic partnerships in Korean software SMEs show that international experience of management team, entrepreneurship, firm's technical ability give positive effect. (2) The results of regression to selling foreign market after start-up in Korean software SMEs show that international experience of management team, entrepreneurship give positive effect. (3) The results of regression to internationalization Behaviors in Korean software SMEs show that use of foreign strategic partnership and selling to foreign market after start-up give positive effect.

Early-stage technology-based firms are confronted with the complexity of foreign markets and global competition from their earliest stages of development. Not only must technology entrepreneurs keep pace with ever-changing technology-based product offerings, but they must simultaneously stay abreast of competitors and industry trends in multiple countries. We surveyed 76 high technology-based firms in Korea to evaluate their international activities and try to explain the intensity of their foreign sales of the markets in which they operate. Research findings suggest that resources necessary to pursue international sales have an important impact on foreign market intensity and attitudes towards foreign markets. Additionally, firm age was positively associated with international intensity. These findings support the notion of high technology firms being "instant internationals" but suggest that proceeding to the next step requires significantly greater time and resources. In line with prior empirical research, these firms tended to increase their international intensity as they became larger. In contrast with what the literature suggests, however, firms utilizing strategic alliances were no more active internationally than those not using strategic alliances. Finally, government assistance helped to explain the international intensity of these firms.

To choose a proper entry mode for foreign market is a very critical for decision makers of firms. It leads the firm's success and failure on that markets in the future. Because of the importance of choosing the right entry mode, and the burden of resources, time, and efforts the company should have, it is very difficult and painful for decision maker to change one entry mode to another. The objective of this study explored on the macroeconomic level, which encompasses economic, political, cultural and geographic variables, as the determinants on the entry mode choice. To test the hypothesis empirically, correlation analysis was performed to identify the relationship among variables. In addition, the binominal logistic regression analysis was conducted to verify the relative contribution of each variables. SPSS PC+ was used for analysing data from questionnaires and second sources. The results of the analyses are as follows; First, the cultural distance factors affected significantly the entry mode choice. Second, size of the market factors affected the entry mode choice. The results indicated the necessity to acknowledge the cultural difference between the host country and home country, and the size of the market of the host country also is a factor affecting significantly the entry mode choice. On the other hand, this study indicated that country-related risk, government polices and market competitive iintensity are non-significant factors on choosing location.

Questionnaires were mailed or faxed to the random selected firms in Korea in that these firms have had a strategic alliance with foreign firms. Statistical data were analyzed to test factor analysis and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS PC+ package. The results of empirical study are as follows; (1) The results of factor analysis showed that partner selection criteria of Korean companies consist of two factor groups. ① Task-related criteria : asset, technology, marketing, and host country requirement. ② Strategic activity-related criteria : cooperation relationship, firm size, and product reputation. (2) The results of regression analysis to alliance success showed that asset, technology, cooperation relationship, product reputation give positive effect. But, firm size takes a negative effect.
