        Production of pure ethanol from azeotropic solution by pressure swing adsorption

        Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is attractive for final separation in the process of water removal especially for fuel ethanol production. Despite many researches on simulation and experimental works on adsorption of water on 3A zeolite in a fixed bed, none have studied a process with the actual PSA system. The purpose of this research was to study the PSA process with two adsorbers and effects of several parameters. The research also included analysis of kinetic and thermodynamic data of ethanol-water adsorption on commercial 3A zeolites in a single fixed bed. A two-level factorial design experiment was used in this research work to preliminarily screen the influence and interaction among the factors. Effects of important parameters such as initial temperature, feed concentration and feed rate were investigated. It was proven that the Langmuir isotherm could best predict the experimental results. In the PSA pilot test, the principal factors, which had effects on the performance, were feed rate, feed concentration, adsorption pressure and the cycle time. Prediction of the process efficiency in terms of ethanol recovery and enrichment was proposed in the form of regression models. The results of the study in a fixed bed adsorber could help designing a pilotscale PSA unit. The experiments proved to be successful in terms of producing high concentration ethanol with high percentage of ethanol recovery. With further simulation work the process could be scaled up for an industrial use.

        Anti-Gastritis and Anti-Oxidant Effects of Chenopodium album Linne Fractions and Betaine

        Chenopodium album Linne (CAL) is a fast-growing weedy annual plant. The leaves and young shoots may be eaten as a leafy vegetable. In oriental medicine, CAL has been used for treatment of skin disease, fever, stomach ache, toothache, and paralysis. After a preliminary screening of CAL ethanol extract and its fractions obtained from CAL leaves for anti-gastritic and anti-Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) activity, the butanol (BuOH) fraction was found to have the most significant effect. We also examined antioxidative properties of the total CAL extract and its fractions, and also betaine as an ingredient of the BuOH fraction. To investigate the antioxidant effects of CAL on gastritis, the reducing power, free radical scavenging activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and lipid peroxidation effects were determined. Additionally, the BuOH fraction reduced cell viability in a concentration dependent manner in human gastric cancer cell lines. The results of this study revealed that CAL has excellent antioxidant activity, and may be useful in treating gastritis and gastric cancer.

      • Antigastritic Effects of Fruit of Poncirus trifoliata in rats

        We investigated the effects of Poncirus trifoliate (P. trifoliate) (Ponciri Fructus, PF) extract and its constituents on gastritis in rats and human gastric cancer cells The PF 70% ethanol extracts showed the acid-neutralizing capacities and cytotoxicity against human AGS gastric cancer cells. Neohesperidinand poncirin significantly inhibited HCl·ethanol-induced gastric lesions and increased the mucus content. In pylorus ligated rats, neohesperidinsignificantly decreased the volume of gastric secretion and gastric acid output,and increased the pH. From these results, we could suggest that neohesperidin and poncirin isolated from PF may be useful for the treatment and/or protection of gastritis.

      • Unraveling Direct Formation of Hierarchical Zeolite Beta by Dynamic Light Scattering, Small Angle X-ray Scattering, and Liquid and Solid-State NMR: Insights at the Supramolecular Level

        <P>A case study on the understanding of the formation of hierarchical Beta zeolites using gemini-type piperidine based multiammonium surfactant (N<SUB>6</SUB>-diphe) is reported. Complementary techniques were used to investigate N<SUB>6</SUB>-diphe’s structure-directing effect at the molecular level. Combining characterization of the resulting zeolite materials with the toolboxes herein developed for studying clear solutions and dense gels discloses self-assembly processes that govern the growth (and growth inhibition) of nano-Beta zeolite crystals. In clear solution, small-angle X-ray scattering and liquid-state NMR provide insights about the formation of nanoparticles and their degree of order. <SUP>14</SUP>N and <SUP>1</SUP>H-DOSY NMR probe the dynamics and mobility of soluble species. In a dense gel, on the other side, <SUP>27</SUP>Al- and <SUP>29</SUP>Si-(MAS) NMR elucidate the varying local connectivity between initial nano-objects and the final solid products. It has been found that cylindrical micelles control the transformation of solubilized silica and alumina during the formation of zeolite nuclei and guide their crystal growth to nano-Beta rods with bimodal mesoporosity. The predominant smaller mesopores (6 to 8 nm) originate from the template’s hydrophobic alkyl chains, while larger mesopores (10 to 30 nm) are supposed to result from a spinodal decomposition-type segregation of phases consisting of as-formed hydrophobic zeolite rods and an aqueous solution.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Quality of CFD Models for Jet Flow Analysis for the Design of Burners and Boilers

        CFD models are increasingly used for the design and optimisation of boiler combustion chambers. Numerous commercial codes are available, and the user is confronted with making a proper choice for a particular application. In this paper, the accuracy and effectiveness of the popular code FLUENT^TM is investigated in terms of the different turbulence models and numerical schemes that are bundled in the software. The tests are performed for different simple experiments, involving classical hydrodynamic conditions with no combustion. The conclusion of these tests involves also the additional criterion of the computational time required for achieving a reasonable accuracy.

        전내장역위증(Situs Inversus Totalis) 1예 보고

        장결핵으로 인하여 장절제술을 받은 것으로 환인된 35세의 한국인 여성 사체에서 전내장역위증을 1예 관찰하여 그 해부학적 구조를 조사하였다. 모든 흉강 및 복강장기의 위치가 역위되어 있었고 좌하복부에는 장절제술로 인하여 소장의 원위부, 맹장, 충수돌기, 그리고 상행결장의 일부가 절제되어 있었다. 전내장역위증과 더불어 심장은 전형적인 경상우흉심으로서 장경 7㎜의 난원공이 개존되어 있었고 그 외에 좌측 상악동의 부비동염, 앵측성흉관, 췌관 및 총담관 개구위치의 변이 그리고 좌측 부신의 발육부전이 관찰되었다.

      • Oral Extranodal Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma: Series of Forty Two Cases in Malaysia

        Background: Lymphoma is a malignant neoplasm of lymphoid tissue classified into Hodgkin's and non- Hodgkin's types. It mostly affects lymph nodes although a considerable proportion of Non-Hodgkin's cases occur in extranodal sites. Materials and Methods: Selected cases diagnosed as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) during the period of 1980 to 2012 were retrieved from the archives of the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Laboratory, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. The sections from the formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks were stained with H&E as well as with LCA, CD20, and CD3. Results: The mean age was 41.6 years with a male: female ratio of 1.3:1. Out of the forty two cases, nineteen were Malays, eighteen were Chinese, followed by Indians (3) and Indonesians (2). The most common site of involvement was the mandible (22.2%), followed by the maxilla and palate (19.4% each). Most of the lesions presented as a painless progressive swelling. Only thirty six cases were further subdivided into B or T cell types. The majority were B-cell type (26 cases), of these 6 cases were Burkitt's lymphomas. Only ten cases were T-cell lymphoma, with three cases of NK/T-cell lymphoma. Conclusions: In this series of 42 patients diagnosed as extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the lesions appeared as painless swellings, mostly in men with the mandible as the most frequent site of involvement. Majority were B-cell lymphomas with Malays and Chinese being equally affected whereas lymphomas were rare in the Indian ethnicity. T-cell lymphomas were found to be common in the Chinese ethnic group.
