      • Curriculum as a key concept for coaching

        In recent years, international scholars have drawn increasing linkages between coaching and teaching. Educational theories and more in particular, pedagogical theory, has been a focus of efforts to encourage new thinking about the professional work of coaches and ways in which that work may be further enhanced. This paper seeks to extend contemporary discussions about 'the sports coach as educator (Jones, 2006) by focusing attention on the concept of curriculum. Following (Deng, 2007), it is argued that understanding coaching as an educational act and educational practice requires that far greater attention be paid to coaching as a curricular not merely pedagogical task. The paper therefore critically explores the potential relevance of curriculum as a focus for research and professional development in coach education. Notions of the curriculum as contested, inherently political, an expression of power-relations, as socially and culturally constructed, and as perhaps resistant to change, are explored as tools to inform the critique and advancement of contemporary sports coaching. Questions are posed about the ways in which coaches and athletes currently engage in the design and enactment of curriculum, and the significance of that engagement for pedagogical experiences and performance.

        Key challenges in the development of Sport Education: Primary and Middle school teachers' experiences

        이 연구는 호주의 교사들이 학교에서 스포츠교육을 실행할 때 경험한 세 가지 문제를 다루고 있다. 세 가지 문제들은 스포츠교육의 교수-학습에서 교육과정 통합 운영, 평가, 새로운 교육학 관점의 실행이다. 세 가지 문제를 논평하기 위해 초중등학교에서 처음으로 스포츠교육을 시도한 교사들의 사례를 기술하였다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 스포츠교육을 교수․학습하는데 있어서 ‘폭과 깊이’의 적절한 균형을 이룰 필요가 있음을 인식하고 있었다. 학습은 국어, 음악, 미술, 디자인, 테크놀로지 등 다문화적인 영역으로까지 확장시키는 것을 중요하게 강조하였다. 또한 스포츠교육의 모든 학습에서 실제평가가 이루어져야 함을 강조하여 스포츠교육에서 회자되고 있는 전 영역의 학습을 포괄할 수 있는 평가가 이루어져야 함을 논의하였다. 이를 위해 스포츠교육 실행에서 교사와 연구자는 학습 조력자로써의 역할변화를 위해 필요한 것을 고려해야 하고, 학생 학습을 위해 책임감을 공유하는 것도 생각해 보아야한다. 결론적으로 스포츠교육의 성공적 쇄신을 위해 모든 학교의 구조와 지원은 중요한 근원임을 주목해야 한다. This paper focuses on three issues that have emerged as notable challenges for teachers introducing Sport Education in their schools: developing cross curricular and cross-cultural dimensions of teaching and learning; assessment; and taking on a new pedagogy. Experiences of teachers in primary and middle schools trying Sport Education for the first time are used to illustrate and critique these issues. The need to achieve an appropriate balance between 'breadth and depth' in teaching and learning in Sport Education, opportunities to extend learning in literacy, music, art, design and technology, and to specifically pursue cross-cultural issues are highlighted. Extensions to assessment practices to embrace the full range of learning being addressed in Sport Education are discussed. Teachers and researchers reflect upon what is involved in moving to the role of 'facilitator of learning'and sharing responsibility for learning with students. In conclusion attention is drawn to the significance of whole school structures and support for success in curriculum and pedagogical innovation.

        Sport education in teacher education: The key to successful and sustainable development of sporteducation in schools

        This paper focuses on the arena of Physical Education Teacher Education. It presents this as the key site for developing the skills, knowledge and understanding required for teachers to successfully adopt Sport Education as a curriculum model and new pedagogy. School-based research has highlighted that we lack detailed accounts and understandings of what is involved in developing student centred pedagogy with teachers playing the role of facilitator of learning. This paper explains ways in which teacher education programmes can progressively extend skills and understanding to enable beginning teachers to successfully take up these challenges and how the characteristics of sport education need to be respected in teacher education settings if effective programs are to be implemented and achieve desired goals. 이 연구의 초점은 체육교사교육 분야이다. 이를 위해 교육과정모델이며 새 교육학인 스포츠 교육을 성공적으로 적용하기 위해 교사들이 갖추어야 할 기능과 지식 그리고 이해를 개발시키는 주요 분야로써 체육교사교육을 제시한다. 흔히 학교중심 연구에서 교사는 학습 조력자 역할 수행을 하며 학습자 중심의 교육을 하는데 있어서 무엇이 포함되어져야 하는지에 대한 기능과 이해가 부족하다는 것을 조명하고 있다. 이 연구는 교사교육 프로그램에서 초임교사들이 기능과 이해를 어떻게 성공적으로 발전시켜 나가는지를 기술하였다. 그리고 효과적인 프로그램이 수립되고 만족스런 목표가 달성되기 위해서는 스포츠교육이 교사교육의 여러 분야중 하나로 이해되어져야 할 필요성을 제시하였다.

        Design and control of a proof-of-concept active jet engine intake using shape memory alloy actuators

        It has been shown in the literature that active adjustment of the intake area of a jet engine has potential to improve its fuel efficiency. This paper presents the design and control of a novel proof-of-concept active jet engine intake using Nickel-Titanium (Ni-Ti or Nitinol) shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuators. The Nitinol SMA material is used in this research due to its advantages of high power-to-weight ratio and electrical resistive actuation. The Nitinol SMA material can be fabricated into a variety of shapes, such as strips, foils, rods and wires. In this paper, SMA wires are used due to its ability to generate a large strain: up to 6% for repeated operations. The proposed proof-of-concept engine intake employs overlapping leaves in a concentric configuration. Each leaf is mounted on a supporting bar than can rotate. The supporting bars are actuated by an SMA wire actuator in a ring configuration. Electrical resistive heating is used to actuate the SMA wire actuator and rotate the supporting bars. To enable feedback control, a laser range sensor is used to detect the movement of a leaf and therefore the radius of the intake area. Due to the hysteresis, an inherent nonlinear phenomenon associated with SMAs, a nonlinear robust controller is used to control the SMA actuators. The control design uses the sliding-mode approach and can compensate the nonlinearities associated with the SMA actuator. A proof-of-concept model is fabricated and its feedback control experiments show that the intake area can be precisely controlled using the SMA wire actuator and has the ability to reduce the area up to 25%. The experiments demonstrate the feasibility of engine intake area control using an SMA wire actuator under the proposed design.

        체육수업 개선을 위한 스포츠교육 실행: 한국 · 호주 협동 연구

        This paper reports cultural collaborative research in order to practice physical education that is student-centered, using a sport education model in Korea and Australia's primary and secondary schools. We are suggest through the study that one should first practice the cultural collaborative research of the sport education model, to provide the base for an open research culture of sports pedagogy by both countries suggesting and sharing practical methods for developing physical education at school. This cultural study, which will be processed through the action research that discusses the differences between the physical education classes in Korea that is at the moment at the beginning stage, and Australia which has looked at the sport education model to gain many ideas for student-centered physical education classes, will allow one to discover many issues for the development of physical education from various view points. This study introduces the process of the sports education research that is practiced in both countries, and discusses what kind of effects. it has in changes in school physical education classes, and also what kind of features perceptions of teachers and students have. 본 연구는 스포츠교육을 통한 체육수업 운영을 알아보기 위해 한국과 호주에서 수행된 국제 협동연구이다. 이 연구를 위해 양국의 초중등학교에서 1년간 스포츠교육 체육수업을 운영하였다. 연구진은 사회문화적 환경이 다른 양국의 입장을 이해하기 위해 상호방문 수업관찰 및 워크숍, 세미나 발표 등을 공동으로 실행하였다. 자료 수집방법으로 교사-학생 질문지, 인터뷰, 학생 일기, 교사 일지, 모둠 포트폴리오의 다양한 자료를 웹 카페를 통해 수집하였다. 스포츠교육 연구팀의 연구결과는 첫째, 교육과정 운영의 재구성과 통합을 통한 학교중심 스포츠교육 활성화, 둘째, 수업운영과 학생들을 위해 끊임없이 노력하는 기획자와 조력자로서의 교사역할 변화 탐구, 셋째, 스포츠교육 경험을 통해 나타난 학생의 스포츠 인식, 최선의 방법, 책임감, 협력하는 태도를 구체적으로 논의하였다.
