Allelic Variation of Glutenin, Granule-Bound Starch Synthase I and Puroindoline in Korean Wheat Cultivar

        Chul Soo Park,Roberto J. Peña,Byung-Kee Baik,Chon-Sik Kang,Hwa-Young Heo,Young-keun Cheong,Sun-Hee Woo 韓國作物學會 2009 Korean journal of crop science Vol.54 No.2

To investigate the genetic variation of high-and low-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (BMW-GS and LMW-GS), granule-bound starch synthase I (GBSSI) and puroindoline in 24 Korean wheat cultivars. At the BMW-GS compositions, three Glu-A1 alleles, five Glu-B1 alleles and three Glu-D1 alleles were identified. The high frequency of alleles at each locus was Glu-A1c allele (15 cultivars), Glu-B1b allele (16 cultivars) and Glu-D1f allele (16 cultivars). Four alleles were identified at the Glu-A3 and Glu-B3 loci and three at Glu-D3 locus and Glu-A3d, Glu-B3d and Glu-D3a were mainly found at each Glu-3 locus. Glu-A3d, Glu-B3d, Glu-D3b or c (4 cultivars, respectively) and Glu-A3d, Glu-B3d, Glu-D3a and Glu-A3c, Glu-B3d or h, Glu-D3a (3 cultivar, respectively) were predominantly found in Korean wheats. At the GBSS compositions, 2 waxy wheat cultivars, Shinmichal and Shinmichal1, showed null alleles on the Wx loci and other cultivars were wild type in GBSS compositions. At the puroindoline gene compositions, Korean wheat cultivars carried 3 genotypes, which 10 cultivars (41.7%) were Pina-D1a and Pinb-D1a, 11 cultivars (45.8%) had Pina-D1a and Pinb-D1b and 3 cultivars (12.5%) carried Pina-D1b and Pinb-D1a. These genetic variations could present the information to improve flour and end-use quality in Korean wheat breeding programs.

Bio-structural monitoring of bone mineral alterations through electromechanical impedance measurements of a Piezo-device joined to a tooth

        Tinoco Hector A.,Cardona Carlos I.,Marín-Berrio Maribel L. F.,García-Grisales Juliana,Gomez Juan P.,Roldan Samuel I.,Peña Fabio M.,Brinek Adam,Kalasová Dominika,Kaiser Jozef,Zikmund Tomas 대한의용생체공학회 2020 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.10 No.4

Bone presents different systemic functionalities as calcium phosphate reservoir, organ protection, among others. For that reason, the bone health conditions are essential to keep in equilibrium the metabolism of several body systems. Different technologies exist to diagnose bone conditions with invasive methods based on ionizing radiation. Therefore, there is a challenge to develop new ways to evaluate bone alterations in a noninvasive form. This study shows the assessment of a piezo-actuated device acting on a human tooth for the bio-monitoring of bone alterations. The bone diagnosis is performed by applying the electromechanical impedance technique (EMI), commonly used in structural health monitoring. For the experimental tests, five bone samples were prepared, and one was chosen as the monitoring. All samples were put in a decalcifying substance (TBD1 acid–base) at different times to emulate localized bone mineral alterations. Bone reductions were computed by using X-ray micro-computed tomography analyzing the morphometry. Electrical resistance measurements (piezo-device) were taken for the monitoring specimen meanwhile it was partially decalcified during 8520 seconds. In the frequency spectrum, several observation windows showed that the bone alterations gradually changed the electrical resistance signals which were quantified statistically. Results evidenced that the bone density changes are correlated with the electrical resistance measurements; these changes presented an exponential behavior as much as in the calculated index, and bone mineral reduction. The results demonstrated that bone alterations exhibit linear dependence with the computed statistical indexes. This result confirms that it is possible to observe the bone changes from the teeth as a future application.

Acute toxicity of aqueous extract of Ambrosia arborescens Mill. on biochemical and histopathological parameters in rats

        Silva-Correa Carmen R.,Villarreal-La Torre Víctor E.,González-Siccha Anabel D.,Cruzado-Razco José L.,González-Blas María V.,Sagástegui-Guarniz William Antonio,Calderón-Peña Abhel A.,Aspajo-Villalaz Ci 한국독성학회 2022 Toxicological Research Vol.38 No.2

Medicinal plants play an important role in the management of various diseases, so their use has become widespread. However, in some cases the population uses plant species regardless of the toxicity they may possess. The objective of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of aqueous extract from the leaves of Ambrosia arborescens Mill. on the biochemical and histopathological parameters of albino Holtzman rats. To do this, the leaves of A. arborescens were collected in the province of Julcan, La Libertad Region—Peru. OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) guideline 423 was conducted, forming experimental groups of 10 animals each one (5 males and 5 females): Group I (Control), which received 2 mL physiological saline solution (SSF 0.9%), Groups II and III (A. arborescens-300 and A. arborescens-2000), which were given the aqueous extract leaves of A. arborescens in a single dose of 300 and 2000 mg/kg/day, respectively. On the 14th day of exposure, biochemical (creatinine, ALT and AST) and histopathological parameters were measured. The results show that the aqueous extract of A. arborescens at the dose of 2000 mg/kg produces an increase in biochemical parameters which is related to histopathological analysis of liver and renal tissue with mild congestion. The study concludes that the aqueous extract leaves of A. arborescens has a LD50 greater than 2000 mg/kg and produces mild congestion in kidneys and liver, but showed no significant toxicological changes in the other albino Holtzman rats organs.

A Graphical Probabilistic Representation for the Impact Assessment of Wind Power Plants in Power Systems

        Omar Beltran Valle,Rafael Peña Gallardo,Juan Segundo Ramirez,David Wenzhong,Eduard Muljadi 대한전기학회 2020 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.15 No.5

Traditional methods used for the analysis and design of power systems, like power fl ow studies (PFS), do not consider any uncertainties. For example, when there is a high penetration of wind power plants (WPPs), whose raw material is intermittent. In this paper is proposed a graphical probabilistic representation (GPR) based on multi-objective performance index (MPI) to assess the impact of the WPPs penetration in power systems. This representation is applied to the southeastern network of Mexico, where there is increasing penetration of WPPs. Besides, a comparative study is presented, with and without a static var compensator (SVC) device connected to the mentioned network, to evaluate the eff ects of shunt compensation in the point of common coupling (PCC) with WPPs. The results of this comparison are discussed using the GPR proposed. The results show that GPR can be utilized as a useful tool to represent a considerable amount of information in a clear, compact, and single visual representation

Effect of ultrasonic cleaning on the bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals filled with a premixed bioceramic root canal sealer

Peña Bengoa Fernando,Magasich Arze Maria Consuelo,Macchiavello Noguera Cristobal,Moreira Luiz Felipe Nunes,Kato Augusto Shoji,Bueno Carlos Eduardo Da Silveira 대한치과보존학회 2020 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.45 No.2

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasonic cleaning of the intracanal post space on the bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals filled with a premixed bioceramic (Bio-C Sealer [BIOC]) root canal sealer. Materials and Methods: Fifty premolars were endodontically prepared and divided into 5 groups (n = 10), based on the type of root canal filling material used and the post space cleaning protocol. A1: gutta-percha + AH Plus (AHP) and post space preparation with ultrasonic cleaning, A2: gutta-percha + BIOC and post space preparation with ultrasonic cleaning, B1: gutta-percha + AHP and post space preparation, B2: gutta-percha + BIOC and post space preparation, C: control group. Fiber posts were cemented with a self-adhesive luting material, and 1 mm thick slices were sectioned from the middle and cervical third to evaluate the remaining filling material microscopically. The samples were subjected to a push-out test to analyze the bond strength of the fiber post, and the results were analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk, Bonferroni, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05). Failure modes were evaluated using optical microscopy. Results: The results showed that the fiber posts cemented in canals sealed with BIOC had lower bond strength than those sealed with AHP. The ultrasonic cleaning of the post space improved the bond strength of fiber posts in canals sealed with AHP, but not with BIOC. Conclusions: BIOC decreased the bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals, regardless of ultrasonic cleaning.

Master-Slave Teleoperation of Underactuated Mechanical Systems with Communication Delays

        Ollin Peñaloza-Mejía,Luis A. Márquez-Martínez,Jaime Alvarez-Gallegos,Joaquín Alvarez 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2017 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.15 No.2

This paper addresses the control problem of master-slave teleoperation of a class of underactuated mechanicalsystems with communication delays. The core of the proposed solution introduces a suitable couplingmatrix, so the complete error dynamics is written in a linear part, and a nonlinear one, for which the matchingcondition is satisfied. Then, from this representation, discontinuous causal controllers are designed to achieve bilateralcoordination in force and position. The proposal is valid for underactuated manipulators with second-ordernon-holonomic constraints, and represents, to our best knowledge, a contribution in teleoperation systems wherethese mechanisms have been barely considered. Numerical simulations and real-time experiments developed overthe Internet are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Kinetic modeling of sorption–desorption cycles for phenol removal with a cyclodextrin polymer

        Francisco J. Peñas,Ana Romo,José R. Isasi,María J. San José,Sonia Alvarez 한국공업화학회 2019 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.75 No.-

This paper examines the long-term application of a cyclodextrin hydrogel sorbent in multiple sorption–desorption cycles. Aqueous phenol was the target pollutant, whilst methanol, ethanol and isopropanolwere chosen as eluents. The experimental results were well described by empirical models: thebreakthrough curves by a two-parameter dose–response equation, and the elution curves by a pulsepeakequation with two independent parameters. The differences in polarity of solvents producedsorbent fragmentation, particularly marked for isopropanol and considerably lower for methanol, andtherefore a progressive increase in mass-transfer coefficients. In addition, a dual approach was developedfrom the proposed breakthrough model to address the mass transport of sorbate within the packed beds. Thefirst one defines an average mass-transfer coefficient as representative for each complete sorptioncycle, whereas a time-profile of this coefficient is deduced in the second method. A sorption capacity of29.6 mg-phenol/g-sorbent was found in the working conditions.

Prognostic Factors and Decision Tree for Long-Term Survival in Metastatic Uveal Melanoma

        Daniel Lorenzo,María Ochoa,Josep Maria Piulats,Cristina Gutiérrez,Luis Arias,Jaume Català,María Grau,Judith Peñafiel,Estefanía Cobos,Pere Garcia-Bru,Marcos Javier Rubio,Noel Padrón-Pérez,Bruno Dias,Jo 대한암학회 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.4

Purpose The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the existence of a bimodal survival pattern in metastatic uveal melanoma. Secondary aims were to identify the characteristics and prognostic factors associated with long-term survival and to develop a clinical decision tree. Materials and Methods The medical records of 99 metastatic uveal melanoma patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were classified as either short ( 12 months) or long-term survivors (> 12 months) based on a graphical interpretation of the survival curve after diagnosis of the first metastatic lesion. Ophthalmic and oncological characteristics were assessed in both groups. Results Of the 99 patients, 62 (62.6%) were classified as short-term survivors, and 37 (37.4%) as long-term survivors. The multivariate analysis identified the following predictors of long-term survival: age  65 years (p=0.012) and unaltered serum lactate dehydrogenase levels (p=0.018); additionally, the size (smaller vs. larger) of the largest liver metastasis showed a trend towards significance (p=0.063). Based on the variables significantly associated with long-term survival, we developed a decision tree to facilitate clinical decision-making. Conclusion The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of a bimodal survival pattern in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. The presence of certain clinical characteristics at diagnosis of distant disease is associated with long-term survival. A decision tree was developed to facilitate clinical decision-making and to counsel patients about the expected course of disease.

Protection Against Electroshock- and Pentylenetetrazol-induced Seizures by the Water Extract of Rehmannia glutinous can be Mediated through GABA Receptor-chloride Channel Complexes

        김미경,김희진,김성목,June Bryan de la Peña,Irene Joy dela Peña,Chrislean Jun Botanas,우태선,이용수,류종훈,정재훈 한국생약학회 2017 Natural Product Sciences Vol.23 No.1

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by recurrent and unpredictable seizures that are usually controlled with antiepileptic/anticonvulsive drugs. However, most antiepileptic drugs produce various side effects such as tolerance and sedation. Thus, there is a growing interest for alternative anticonvulsive drugs, preferably from natural or herbal sources. In this study, we evaluated the anticonvulsive effects of Rehmannia glutinosa (RG). The anticonvulsive effect of RG extract was evaluated using electroshock- and chemical-induced seizure tests in mice. To identify its probable mechanism of action, the effects of RG extract on Cl- influx was measured in vitro. We found that RG extract has anticonvulsive effects against electroshock-induced seizures, as indicated by an increased seizure threshold in mice. The RG extract also decreased the percentage of seizure responses induced by the GABAergic antagonist, pentylenetetrazole. These results suggest that the anticonvulsive effects of RG extract are mediated through a GABAergic mechanism. In support of this mechanism, our in vitro test showed that RG extract increases intracellular Cl- influx. Furthermore, RG extract did not show sedative and/or muscle relaxant effects in the open-field and rota-rod tests. Altogether, these results confirm that RG extract could be a herbal anticonvulsant and a potential alternative for clinical use.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a phytochemical with various bioactive properties. It has recently been proposed that due to its phytogenic action it can be used as an alternative growth promoter additive to synthetic compounds. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth performance, carcass traits, fiber characterization and skeletal muscle gene expression on hair-lambs supplemented with two doses of FA. Thirty-two male lambs (n = 8 per treatment) were individually housed during a 32 d feeding trial to evaluate the effect of FA (300 and 600 mg d-1) or zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH; 6 mg d-1) on growth performance, and then slaughtered to evaluate the effects on carcass traits, and muscle fibers morphometry from Longissimus thoracis (LT) and mRNA abundance of β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR), MHC-I, MHC-IIX and IGF-I genes. FA increased final weight and average daily gain with respect to non-supplemented animals (p < 0.05). The ZH supplementation increased LT muscle area, with respect to FA doses and control (p < 0.05). Cross-sectional area (CSA) of oxidative fibers was larger with FA doses and ZH (p < 0.05). Feeding ZH increased mRNA abundance for β2-AR compared to FA and control (p < 0.05), and expression of MHC-I was affected by FA doses and ZH (p < 0.05). Overall, FA supplementation of male hair lambs enhanced productive variables due to skeletal muscle hypertrophy caused by MHC-I up-regulation. Results suggest that FA has the potential like a growth promoter in lambs.
