Paweł Rutkowski,Sylwia Łozińska 세종대학교 언어연구소 2016 Journal of Universal Language Vol.17 No.1
The aim of this paper is to analyze the underlying order of major sentential constituents (the verb and its arguments) in Polish Sign Language (polski język migowy, PJM). Although the issue of sign language sentence structure has been present in the literature for more than 30 years now, no satisfactory account thereof has yet been proposed in the case of PJM. Since visual-spatial communication is not fully linear, the importance (or even presence) of basic word order has gone unnoticed in most early accounts of the linguistic properties of PJM. We analyze the issue of argument linearization on the basis of empirical material extracted from a corpus of PJM which is being compiled at the University of Warsaw, Poland. Although a thorough description has yet to be produced, our data show that PJM does have its own rules of ordering sentential constituents. We conclude that PJM should be classified as an SVO language.

Fast classification of fibres for concrete based on multivariate statistics
Paweł K. Zarzycki,Jacek Katzer,Jacek Domski 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.20 No.1
In this study engineered steel fibres used as reinforcement for concrete were characterized by number of key mechanical and spatial parameters, which are easy to measure and quantify. Such commonly used parameters as length, diameter, fibre intrinsic efficiency ratio (FIER), hook geometry, tensile strength and ductility were considered. Effective classification of various fibres was demonstrated using simple multivariate computations involving principal component analysis (PCA). Contrary to univariate data mining approach, the proposed analysis can be efficiently adapted for fast, robust and direct classification of engineered steel fibres. The results have revealed that in case of particular spatial/geometrical conditions of steel fibres investigated the FIER parameter can be efficiently replaced by a simple aspect ratio. There is also a need of finding new parameters describing properties of steel fibre more precisely.
Is nP Part of Universal Grammar?
Paweł Rutkowski 세종대학교 언어연구소 2012 Journal of Universal Language Vol.13 No.2
Rutkowski & Progovac (2005) propose to analyze the postnominal placement of classifying adjectives in Polish as resulting from N-movement. Rutkowski (2007a) modifies this account by arguing for a special structural layer (nP) projected immediately above NP, whose head (n°―‘little’ or ‘light’ N) attracts the noun in classifying structures. The goal of the present paper is to discuss the status of nP in more detail and to extend the nP analysis to other nominal constructions―both in Polish and crosslinguistically.
Cephennomicrus Reitter of New Caledonia (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae)
Paweł Jałoszyński 한국응용곤충학회 2017 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.20 No.2
Cephennomicrus Reitter is a large genus of the cephenniine ant-like stone beetles (Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae) distributed in the Afrotropical, Oriental, Australia and South Pacific. Adults of most species do not reach 1mmof body length; they are rarely collected, and typically only male characters are useful for species diagnoses; for those reasons systematics of this genus is a challenging task. Only one species was previously known to occur in NewCaledonia, an unusually pigmented, bicolored C. caledonicus (Franz). Based on newly collected specimens, C. caledonicus is redescribed and C. wanati sp.n. is described. The NewCaledonian species have unusually uniform and long vestiture of setae, and the newly described species is the third (and first outside Africa) known Cephennomicrus showing male dimorphic characters not on the head, as in many other congeners, but on the elytra.
The Internet as a Source of Information for Patients Prior to Rhinoplasty
Paweł Szychta,Tomasz Zielinski,Jan Rykała,Julia Kruk-Jeromin 대한이비인후과학회 2011 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.4 No.3
Objectives. To determine the prevalence of Internet use by patients considering rhinoplasty and to identify the impact of such information on their decisions. Methods. Prospective analysis of the impact of information received via the Internet by patients considering rhinoplasty on their decision-making prior to surgery. Eighty six patients, scheduled for post-traumatic or aesthetic rhinoplasty, received a questionnaire, consisting of 19 questions, which sought to evaluate their perception of the importance of the Internet information to them and also collected relevant demographic and sociological data. Results. Respondents searched online for descriptions of medical procedures, information about how to contact other patients,pre- and post-operative pictures and making contact with a doctor. Patients considering aesthetic rhinoplasty received medical information from a third party or via the Internet. Individuals requiring post-traumatic surgical treatment were usually referred by family doctor. Conclusion. Patients planning nasal aesthetic surgery form their opinions after consulting friends and searching the Internet, which can act as an important medical assistance.

Edge intelligence is one of the key paradigms relatedto the efficient implementation of future wireless networks. Inthis context, the surrounding telecommunication infrastructureis intended to support the functioning of the wireless system. Thus, it is necessary to offload some computational efforts tothe system edge, allowing the infrastructure to learn and makeprospective decisions. However, for the reliable realization of theedge intelligence concept, the wireless system architecture shouldbe designed properly to minimize both storage cost and inducedlatency. In this paper, we compare three architecture proposals(centralized, distributed, and hybrid) tailored to the autonomousdriving use case, being one of the key vertical scenarios incontemporary and future wireless networks. We evaluate theperformance of an autonomous platooning system, where theoperating frequency is selected dynamically with the support ofinfrastructure to minimize the overall interference level in thewhole band. Extensive computer simulations have been carriedout to analyze the impact of the induced delay in signal processingand storage efficiency.
From Demonstratives to Copulas:A Cross-Linguistic Perspective and the Case of Polish
Paweł Rutkowski 세종대학교 언어연구소 2006 Journal of Universal Language Vol.7 No.2
This paper aims to clarify the syntactic status of the element to which appears in Polish copular expressions. The word to has recently been analyzed as a verb, see Linde-Usiekniewicz (2006); however, from the historical point of view, it clearly derives from a demonstrative pronoun. In the present article, I attempt to set the discussion of Polish to-constructions against a broader, cross-linguistic perspective. I provide an overview of a number of syntactic properties that characterize copulas derived from pronouns in other languages. I follow Li & Thompson (1977) in assuming that a demonstrative may be (diachronically) reanalyzed as a copula if the nominal structure that precedes it changes its status from a left-dislocated topic to the subject of the whole copular expression. I conclude that this reanalysis has not yet taken place in Polish; therefore, I argue that the element to should not be interpreted as a copula.

Armillaria root disease affects forests around the world. It occurs in many habitats and causes losses in the infested stands. Weather conditions are important factors for growth and development of Armillaria species. Yet, the relation between occurrence of damage caused by Armillaria disease and weather variables are still poorly understood. Thus, we used generalized linear mixed models to determine the relationship between weather conditions of current and previous year (temperature, precipitation and their deviation from long-term averages, air humidity and soil temperature) and the incidence of Armillaria-induced damage in young (up to 20 years old) and older (over 20 years old) coniferous stands in selected forest districts across Poland. We used unique data, gathered over the course of 23 years (1987-2009) on tree damage incidence from Armillaria root disease and meteorological parameters from the 24-year period (1986-2009) to reflect the dynamics of damage occurrence and weather conditions. Weather parameters were better predictors of damage caused by Armillaria disease in younger stands than in older ones. The strongest predictor was soil temperature, especially that of the previous year growing season and the current year spring. We found that temperature and precipitation of different seasons in previous year had more pronounced effect on the young stand area affected by Armillaria. Each stand’s age class was characterized by a different set of meteorological parameters that explained the area of disease occurrence. Moreover, forest district was included in all models and thus, was an important variable in explaining the stand area affected by Armillaria.
SOLVING OF THERMOPLASTIC-CARBON BONDING ISSUE USING NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS
Paweł Paździor,Mirosław Szczepanik 한국자동차공학회 2021 International journal of automotive technology Vol.22 No.2
The aim of this study was to elaborate on the methods of constructing combined components of a car mirror. The components were made of materials with different thermal expansion coefficient. The basis for the research were numerical simulations prepared in Moldex 3D software. The external cover of a mirror would be made of carbon composite based on epoxy resin (hereafter referred to as carbon), and the internal insert would be made of ABS. The adhesive bonding applied did not provide appropriate properties and led to breaks during usage. After carrying out moldflows it was found that the areas of breaks were determined by the places where fronts of flowing material met during the injection. The cause of breaking was diametrically different thermal expansion of both materials. This induced significant stresses in the adhesive layer. Finally, the effective solution was to change the geometry of the mirror insert made of thermoplastic ABS.
