Behind and Beyond the Archaeology of the Silk Road: Laboratory Analyses in Eurasia, Some Results, Discussions, and Interpretations for Protohistory and Antiquity

2023 Acta Via Serica Vol.8 No.2

The paper presents some new results illustrating some developments related to the concept of the Silk Road and subsequent methodological reflections. New laboratory results of scientific analyses of plants, minerals, and human remains in combination with more conventional methods of research contribute to a better understanding of the multidirectionality of exchanges in Pre- and Protohistory. Unsuspected long-distance transfers of items, especially of metals (tin) and biological materials (plants, pathogens, etc.) are discovered. Adding ancient DNA and petroglyphs to the vexed question of the Indo-European migrations across Eurasia complexifies the familiar linguistic, historical, and archaeological research landscape. Recent excavations show the impact of the adoption of artistic elements adapted from the Achaemenid arts, far in the steppe world, and up to China. Multidirectional (including North-South lanes) and multidisciplinary approaches leave space and hope for more rigorous scientific modelizations for the archaeology of Eurasia and the Silk Road.

Consumer and societal credit card tensions and rights: A foundational model of paradoxes and resolutions

Vol.27 No.2

This study explores the theoretical foundations for consumer rights by drawing on broader human rights theories and consumer marketing literature. The study examines credit card debt through this theoretical lens and develops a model of consumer rights. The model is developed through a synthesis of rights literature and document analysis of newspaper articles about credit cards and debt. The study identifi es two primary tensions. The fi rst is a call for individual responsibility versus a call for protection of consumer rights. The second is the perception that credit cards either facilitate or inhibit quality of life and self-fulfi lment. The position in this tension-ridden, arguably paradoxical space depends on beliefs and perceptions about human frailty, institutional precariousness, confl ict, and locus of sympathy. This rights model can be used to understand the conditions where the pressure for consumer rights is either amplifi ed or inhibited.

Deepening how cultural capital structures consumption of the performing arts

Vol.28 No.1

This paper deepens existing research that suggests cultural capital (CC), a status-laden resource linked to social class, associates with differences in consumption values, consumption portfolios (range of products consumed), and emic (consumers’ own) interpretations of performing arts. Our research context comprises attendance at the live and recorded performing arts in a large metropolitan city located in a Western country in which the dominant language is English. The research methods comprise long interviews with, and observations of, a sample of 36 performing arts patrons who had attended a classical music concert at least once: specifically, 18 low CC and 18 high CC. Analysis suggests several advances on previous research. Specific subsets of consumption values linked to CC in the prior literature, associate with LCC or HCC. These consumption values can be viewed as macro-values, which associate with numerous micro-values. Additional consumption values worthy of additional exploration emerged from data analysis. Consumption portfolios identified in prior research, are confirmed as associating with CC.

Campaign Effects on the Level of State Competitiveness in U.S. Presidential Elections

Vol.4 No.1

Over the past decade, the competitive levels across U.S. states have shifted. This means that the level of competitiveness measured by the margin of victory is not always consistent. Competitiveness is generally considered an important variable in election studies because of its dynamics. However, the question of why some states are more competitive than others has been understudied. Long-term conditions such as demographic characteristics partially explain the variation of state competitiveness, but these conditions do not substantially vary from one election to the next. Why are some states becoming more competitive, while others are becoming less competitive? We argue that campaign activities influence the dynamics of the level of competitiveness in states. The level of campaign resource allocations across states affects the level of competitiveness, and the results show a strong influence of campaign activities on state competitiveness in the 2008 and 2012 U.S. presidential elections.

Hypoglycaemic and anti-hyperglycaemic activity of Tabernanthe iboga aqueous extract in fructose-fed streptozotocin type 2 diabetic rats

        Bading-Taïka Bayissi,Souza Alain,Bourobou Bourobou Henri-Paul,Lione Lisa A. 2021 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.21 No.2

Root bark preparations of the Gabonese plant Tabernanthe iboga (T. iboga) has long been used in traditional medicine in Central and West African regions for the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study is the first investigation of in vivo hypoglycaemic activity in healthy rats and anti-hyperglycaemic activity of T. iboga in a 10% fructose-fed (40 mg/kg i.p.) streptozotocin (STZ) injected type 2 diabetic rat model. T. iboga at 50 to 200 mg/kg induced hypoglycaemia activ-ity over 3 h fasted glucose tolerance in healthy Wistar rats and anti-hyperglycaemic effects on non-fasted and fasted blood glucose in fructose-fed STZ T2D rats with no toxicity. Fructose-fed STZ T2D rats developed characteristic type 2 diabetic complications over 6 weeks exhibiting significantly elevated fasting and non-fasting blood glucose, polydipsia, reduced body weight gain and glucose and insulin tolerance compared with STZ alone and normal control rats. T. iboga (50 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg bw) administered p.o. once daily for 4 weeks significantly improved diabetic symptoms of polydipsia, reduced body weight, hyperglycaemia, glucose and insulin tolerance (as AUC) compared with fructose-fed STZ T2D rats. T. ibogaaqueous extract (50 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) also significantly reversed altered actions of marker enzymes of liver including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine, HbA1c and elevated triglycerides in fructose-fed STZ type 2 diabetic rats. Our outcomes show that daily oral provision of T. iboga improves type 2 diabetes complications, superior to glibenclamide, in rat fructose-fed STZ model and offers the potential for safe clinical management of T2D in Gabon.

Middle East Consensus Statement on the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management of Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy

        Yvan Vandenplas,Ahmed Abuabat,Suleiman Al-Hammadi,Gamal Samy Aly,Mohamad S Miqdady,Sanaa Youssef Shaaban,Paul-Henri Torbey 대한소아소화기영양학회 2014 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.17 No.2

Presented are guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) which is the most common food allergy in infants. It manifests through a variety of symptoms that place a burden on both the infant and their caregivers. The guidelines were formulated by evaluation of existing evidence-based guidelines, literature evidence and expert clinical experience. The guidelines set out practical recommendations and include algorithms for the prevention and treatment of CMPA. For infants at risk of allergy, appropriate prevention diets are suggested. Breastfeeding is the best method for prevention; however, a partially hydrolyzed formula should be used in infants unable to be breastfed. In infants with suspected CMPA, guidelines are presented for the appropriate diag-nostic workup and subsequent appropriate elimination diet for treatment. Exclusive breastfeeding and maternal diet-ary allergen avoidance are the best treatment. In infants not exclusively breastfed, an extensively hydrolyzed formula should be used with amino acid formula recommended if the symptoms are life-threatening or do not resolve after extensively hydrolyzed formula. Adherence to these guidelines should assist healthcare practitioners in optimizing their approach to the management of CMPA and decrease the burden on infants and their caregivers.

      • Enhanced charge carrier transport properties in colloidal quantum dot solar cells via organic and inorganic hybrid surface passivation

        Hong, John,Hou, Bo,Lim, Jongchul,Pak, Sangyeon,Kim, Byung-Sung,Cho, Yuljae,Lee, Juwon,Lee, Young-Woo,Giraud, Paul,Lee, Sanghyo,Park, Jong Bae,Morris, Stephen M.,Snaith, Henry J.,Sohn, Jung Inn,Cha, Se Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Journal of materials chemistry. <▼1>
We report a PbS QD hybrid passivation structure to eliminate trap sites while increasing charge extraction in QD solar cells.
</▼1><▼2>
Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are extremely promising as photovoltaic materials. In particular, the tunability of their electronic band gap and cost effective synthetic procedures allow for the versatile fabrication of solar energy harvesting cells, resulting in optimal device performance. However, one of the main challenges in developing high performance quantum dot solar cells (QDSCs) is the improvement of the photo-generated charge transport and collection, which is mainly hindered by imperfect surface functionalization, such as the presence of surface electronic trap sites and the initial bulky surface ligands. Therefore, for these reasons, finding effective methods to efficiently decorate the surface of the as-prepared CQDs with new short molecular length chemical structures so as to enhance the performance of QDSCs is highly desirable. Here, we suggest employing hybrid halide ions along with the shortest heterocyclic molecule as a robust passivation structure to eliminate surface trap sites while decreasing the charge trapping dynamics and increasing the charge extraction efficiency in CQD active layers. This hybrid ligand treatment shows a better coordination with Pb atoms within the crystal, resulting in low trap sites and a near perfect removal of the pristine initial bulky ligands, thereby achieving better conductivity and film structure. Compared to halide ion-only treated cells, solar cells fabricated through this hybrid passivation method show an increase in the power conversion efficiency from 5.3% for the halide ion-treated cells to 6.8% for the hybrid-treated solar cells.
</▼2>
