      • Malware detection: program run length against detection rate

        <P>N-gram analysis is an approach that investigates the structure of a program using bytes, characters or text strings. This research uses dynamic analysis to investigate malware detection using a classification approach based on N-gram analysis. A key issue with dynamic analysis is the length of time a program has to be run to ensure a correct classification. The motivation for this research is to find the optimum subset of operational codes (opcodes) that make the best indicators of malware and to determine how long a program has to be monitored to ensure an accurate support vector machine (SVM) classification of benign and malicious software. The experiments within this study represent programs as opcode density histograms gained through dynamic analysis for different program run periods. A SVM is used as the program classifier to determine the ability of different program run lengths to correctly determine the presence of malicious software. The findings show that malware can be detected with different program run lengths using a small number of opcodes.</P>

        Effects of Milled Cut Steel Fibers on the Properties of Concrete

        This study presents the mechanical and transport properties of milled cut steel fiber reinforced concretes (MCSFRC). Properties studied include unit weight, workability, compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, bond strength, water absorption, water porosity, water sorptivity, rapid chloride ion permeability and drying shrinkage of concrete. Mixtures with a waterbinder ratio of 0.40, total binder content of 500 kg/m3 and milled cut steel fiber content of 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00% by concrete volume were produced and tested. The laboratory results showed a slight reduction in compressive strength with the use of milled cut steel fiber. On the other hand milled cut steel fibers significantly improved the tensile strength and decreased the drying shrinkage. Although no significant increase was observed in the absorption, porosity and sorptivity, chloride ion permeability increased drastically with the increase of milled cut steel fiber content.

        Bivariate Long Term Fuzzy Time Series Forecasting of Dry Cargo Freight Rates

        This paper proposes a bivariate long term fuzzy inference system for time series forecasting task in the eld of freight market. Fuzzy time series methods are applied by many scholars and it is broadly accepted pattern recognition and forecasting tool. Previous studies mainly establish algorithms for high requency time series data such as daily and monthly intervals. The proposed model performs similar techniques for long term annual base data and also extends the conventional method with multi-variate heuristic algorithm. Empirical work is accomplished on shipping freight rate data and life expectancy is used as a leading indicator in the bivariate fuzzy time series model.

      • Irrationality in Politics and Governance of Maritime Affairs: The Collapse of Sovereign Maritime Governance

        This paper investigates maritime policies from the perspective of behavioural law and economics by questioning the role of political instruments, levels of development, groupthink bias, moral hazards and practical examples. Through the emergence of deregulation and procedural simplification, the reasons behind overregulation need to be revisited. The future of maritime governance is expected to hollow out several functions for alternative institutions and keep the governance simple for performing other roles such as advisory services, mainstreaming, amongst others. Therefore, the concept of maritime governance without a government can be thought as a driving force for the future. Based on the deregulation and the hollow-out framework, maritime governance (particularly in developing and developed countries) should focus on the softpower of maritime administration and the role of expert power; as well as referent power to mainstream the maritime industry.

        Temperament and Character in Euthymic Major Depressive Disorder Patients: The Effect of Previous Suicide Attempts and Psychotic Mood Episodes

        Objective The purpose of this study was to examine personality traits of patients with major depressive disorder and explore the possible connections between personality and clinical and sociodemographic variables. Methods The sociodemographic and clinical properties of 80 patients with major depression, who were euthymic according to Hamilton Depression Scale scores, were recorded. Their personality was evaluated by using Temperament and Character Inventory and results were compared with 80 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We used general linear model analysis to evaluate the manner in which the variables contributed to TCI scores. ResultsaaRemitted depressive patients scored significantly lower on on self-directedness and higher on harm avoidance than HC. Previous suicide attempts had a main effect only on harm avoidance while previous psychotic mood episodes were significantly associated with novelty seeking, self-directedness and cooperativeness. With respect to numeric clinical variables, only duration of illness was significantly and negatively correlated with NS and RD scores. ConclusionaaPatients with euthymic major depressive disorder may have significantly different personality traits than the normal population, and patients with different clinical and sociodemographic characteristics may show different personality patterns. In addition, assessment of major depressed patients by means of the Temperament and Character Inventory may be helpful to get a deeper insight into those personality traits underlying suicidality and the emergence of psychotic mood episode.         Judgemental Forecasting in the Dry Bulk Shipping Business: Statistical vs. Judgemental Approach

        This paper investigates the accuracy of judgmental forecasting methods for dry bulk freight market. Judgmental forecasting is a method that implements the purely judgmental aspects of a system. The research investigates judgmental forecasting for the Baltic Dry Index, and compares it with statistical extrapolation methods. Post-sample forecasting accuracy indicates the superiority of the proposed approach over the conventional statistical methods. Empirical studies are performed with an expert group and the accuracy of judgmental point estimates is compared with exponential smoothing, the X12 ARIMA, and the TRAMO/SEATS algorithms. The results of expert predictions outperformed traditional time-series methods.

        Quantification of void shape in cemented materials

        A color based segmentation procedure and a modified signature technique have been applied to the detection and analyses of complicated void shapes in cemented materials. The gray-scale segmentation and available signature methods were found to be inefficient especially for the analyses of complicated void shapes. The applicability of the developed methodology has been demonstrated on artificially prepared cemented materials made of self compacted concrete material. In order to characterize the void shapes in the investigated sample images, two new shape parameters called as coefficients of inclusion and exclusion have been proposed. When compared with the traditional use of the signature method, it was found that the methodology followed herein would better characterize complicated void shapes. The methodology followed in this study may be applied to the analysis of complicated void shapes that are often encountered in other cementitious materials such as clays and rocks.

        The Preparation of Transparent Organic Field Effect Transistor Using a Novel EDOT Functional Styrene Copolymer Insulator With a PEDOT:PSS Gate Electrode

        In this study, we have purposed to combine both polystyrene (PS) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) groups as a gate dielectric and to fabricate a transparent organic field effect transistor (OFET) device with polymeric gate electrode using this novel organic dielectric material. The focus point of this work is to obtain a transparent OFET and to minimize the interface states between gate insulator and gate electrode. Firstly, we have synthesized EDOT functional polystyrene (PS-EDOT) copolymer as gate insulator via “click” chemistry between azide-functional styrene copolymer and propargyl-functionalized EDOT. We used the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) conductive polymer mixture as a suitable alternative gate electrode instead of inorganic contacts, which is a new topic in the organic electronics. The contact resistance value was measured as 1/600 (S/cm)-1. At the end of the process transparent OFETs with different channel length were fabricated using spin coating method by which poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), novel PS-EDOT copolymer insulator and PEDOT:PSS were coated on prepatterned OFET substrate. Electrical characterizations of OFET devices were held in total darkness and in air ambient in order to achieve output and transfer current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The main parameters such as the threshold voltage (VTh), field effect mobility (μFET) and current on/off ratio (Ion/off) of the devices were extracted from capacitance-frequency (C-f) plot. It was found that fabricated PS-EDOT OFETs exhibit good device performances such as low VTh, remarkable mobility, and Ion/off values.

        Developing a comprehensive approach to port performance assessment

        This paper investigates the port performance assessment and proposes a comprehensive framework with various perspectives as well as priority distributions of stakeholders* expectations in port business and operations. One fundamental questions in port performance studies is how to evaluate and quantify intangible indicators on performance. There are definitely inputs and outputs, which may be measured and evaluated through conventional instruments. However, each instrument deals with a particular aspect of whole performance problem (e.g. port efficiency, port productivity,), and many of these instruments are limited to ‘measurable’ data on port management and operations. In this paper, these two common problems are put under the scope, and a comprehensive port performance assessment scheme is established by gathering various perspectives. Quality function deployment (QFD) approach is preferred to formulize the problem and define priority ratings of expectations by each stakeholder in the port domain. The framework can contribute to a broader understanding of ports as business units, its development drivers and interaction with community neighbors, and to shed light to port performance assessment considering both public and private entities.
