We investigate the influence of nonlinear viscoelastic damping on the response of a cantilever sensor covered by piezoelectric layers in a symmetric or asymmetric configuration. We formulate an initial-boundary-value problem which consistently incorporates both geometric and material nonlinearities including the effect of viscoelastic damping which cannot be ignored for micro- and nano-mechanical sensor operation in a vacuum environment. We employ an asymptotic multiplescales methodology to yield the system nonlinear frequency response near its primary resonance and employ a model-based estimation procedure to deduce the system damping backone curve from controlled experiments in vacuum. We discuss the effect of nonlinear damping on sensor applications for scanning probe microscopy.
An Adverse Social Welfare Effect of Quadruply Gainful Trade
Oded Stark,Grzegorz Kosiorowski 대외경제정책연구원 2020 East Asian Economic Review Vol.24 No.3
Acknowledging that individuals dislike having low relative income renders trade less attractive when seen as a technology that integrates two economies by merging separate social spheres into one. We define a “trembling trade” as a situation in which gains from trade are less than losses in relative income, with the result that global social welfare is reduced. We show that a “trembling trade” can arise even when trade is more gainful in four ways: through trade the absolute income of everyone increases, the income gap in both economies is reduced, as is the income gap between the trading economies. However, trade brings populations, economies, or markets that were not previously connected closer together in social space. As a consequence, separate social spheres merge, and people’s social space and their comparators are altered. Assuming that people like high (absolute) income and dislike low relative income, the aggregate increase in unhappiness caused by the trade-induced escalation in relative deprivation can result in a negative overall impact of trade on (utilitarian-measured) social welfare, if the absolute income gains are not large enough to mitigate the relative income losses.

This paper looks at the integration of regions and nations through the prism of the merger of populations (societies). The paper employs a particular index of social stress. Stylized examples of the merging of two populations suggest that with integration, the social stress index will increase. The examples form the basis for the development of new formulas for calculating the social stress of an integrated population as a function of the levels of social stress of the constituent populations when apart. The formulas reveal that the social stress of an integrated population is higher than the sum of the levels of social stress of the constituent populations when apart. This raises the distinct possibility that the merging of populations may be a social liability: integration may fail to give the populace a sense of improved wellbeing.
Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of Silica-Encapsulated CoZnFe₂O₄ Magnetic Nanoparticles
La Ode Rusman,Amjad Tri Puspitasari,Edi Suharyadi,Takeshi Kato,Satoshi Iwata 한국자기학회 2019 Journal of Magnetics Vol.24 No.1
Zinc-doped cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (CoZnFe₂O₄) with silica encapsulation have been successfully synthesized by using coprecipitation method. The concentration of silica was varied by 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, 30 % and 50 % of weight. The XRD spectra show that all samples have the character of the main spinel diffraction peaks (2θ) attributed to the (220), (311), (400), (422), and (511) planes. The FTIR analysis shows that the intrinsic stretching vibrations of metal-oxygen at the frequency range of 393 ㎝−1 - 401 ㎝−1 and 470 ㎝−1 - 563 ㎝−1 were found at octahedral and tetrahedral sublattices, respectively. The unencapsulated CoZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticle has coercivity (Hc) and maximum magnetization (M) of 251 Oe and 29.0 emu/gram, respectively. The coercivity value of the encapsulated nanoparticles increases up to 853 Oe with the increase of silica concentration, while the maximum magnetization decreases to 24.2 emu/gram.

In this study, the chemical components and termiticidal activities of bamboo vinegar against subterranean termite were evaluated. Bamboo vinegar used in this study were produced from Mayan (Gigantochloa robusta Kurz.), Balcoa (Bambusa balcooa Roxb.), and Taiwan (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro). It was analyzed by gravimetric methods. Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) was soaked for 24 h and tested against Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7207-2014). The bamboo vinegar demonstrated antitermite activities against subterranean termite. Vinegar of 400℃ recorded higher total phenol and acid than that of 300℃. Results from this study suggest that the phenolic and acidic component of the bamboo vinegar contributed to 100% mortality rate of the termite, some wood weight loss, and a decrease in the termite feeding rate. These results strongly recommend that bamboo vinegar from D. latiflorus Munro is a potential environmentally friendly preservative.

Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq.) is a fast-growing species that exhibits a lower natural resistance than that exhibited by the timber sourced from natural forests. Jabon’s resistance to termite attack can be improved by impregnating its wood structure with poisonous organic materials. This study examined jabon’s resistance to termite attack when impregnated with wood vinegar and an animal adhesive. The wood specimens were impregnated using sengon wood vinegar and an animal adhesive (8% and 10%, respectively) using a vacuum pressure machine. The specimens were tested for their resistance to subterranean and dry-wood termites according to Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7207-2014). The results denoted that jabon impregnated with wood vinegar and an animal adhesive concentration of at least 8% with the addition of 4% borate was effective to resist termite attacks. The impregnated jabon exhibited a lower weight loss and higher termite mortality when compared with those exhibited by the control specimens. Thus, the resistance class improved from class IV to class I.
Big Data Performance Evaluation Analysis Using Apache Pig
Gal Engelberg,Oded Koren,Nir Perel 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.10 No.11
While companies' usage of big data products increases, the question of which big data architecture is the most suitable to the company's needs is rising. This study presents an approach of running multiple processes which simulates preliminary data processing of sale transactions input dataset using Apache Pig, in order to find the best performing big data environment in terms of decentralization level over the HDFS. The case study approach can provide companies an additional tool for understanding the required investment on hardware or cloud computing resources. We analyze which decentralization level achieves the best processing time, and explore the behavior of performance's change according to the change in decentralization level and performance change according to the change in the size of the input dataset. The case study's insights are: When processing the same data flow over the same input dataset, processing time performance is better as long as decentralization level increases; As long as decentralization level increases the change between performances decreases significantly; Processing the same Pig data flow under the same scale of decentralization level over large input dataset performs better then processing it over a smaller input dataset - in terms of processing time per volume unit; As blocks-data nodes ratio becomes higher, the processing time becomes longer, and vice versa.
Pig Vs. Hive Use Case Analysis
Danielle Kendal,Oded Koren,Nir Perel 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Database Theory and Appli Vol.9 No.12
Corporations are changing their practices to data-driven big data initiatives, as big data analytics has provided companies with the ability to grow their businesses and increase competition. As the importance of data analytics grew, so accordingly did the size of the data to analyze, thus demanding a more powerful data platform. This paper shows a case study of two High Level Query Languages that are constructed on top of Hadoop MapReduce; Pig and Hive. By creating a query in each query language, both resulting in an identical output, and by running each query 30 times on 2 different sized files (120 runs total), this comparison provides a statistically significant conclusion.
