Fosmid Cloning, Nucleotide Sequence, and Characterization of a Beta-Lactamase Gene from Subsurface Isolates

A beta-lactamase gene was isolated for the first time from a terrestrial subsurface environment using a combined cultivation and direct cloning strategy. The gene, discovered from 24 m below land surface in Hawaii, was most similar to the penicillinase from Bacillus licheniformis. The resistance gene was confirmed via subcloning and its minimum inhibitory concentration values were measured against several test betalactam antibiotics. This study extends the knowledge on resistance to antimicrobials, which may help the efforts to minimize their future threat.

Effect of MAP and Vacuum Sealing on Sensory Qualities of Drysalted Olive

The ‘Gemlik’ olive, grown in Turkey, is the main variety used in the production of commercial table olives. The aim of the present work was to determine the effect on sensory qualities of dry-salted olives of the ‘Gemlik’ cultivar packed with vacuum sealing or modified atmosphere packaging and stored at 4 or 20^oC. Storage temperature did not have a significant effect on the sensory profile (p>0.05). However, with the exception of the color attribute, somewhat higher overall scores were given to samples stored at 4^oC. In both vacuum sealing and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) samples stored at 4^oC, the lack of oxygen and dipping the olives in 10 ppm chlorine solution before dry-salting, prevented the growth of yeast and mold and therefore both rancidity and softness attributes scored higher points by panelists.

Comparison of Milk Yield and Animal Health in Turkish Farms with Differing Stall Types and Resting Surfaces

The current study was carried out to determine the influence of different resting surfaces and stall types on milk yield and animal health. Study was carried out in Bursa that is one of the most important cities of Turkey in terms of dairy production. Effects of resting surfaces and stall types on milk yield were found to be important. Also influence of different resting surfaces and stall types on lactation length was examined and found that rubber mats were different from the two other options. Relationships between different resting surfaces or stall types and health problems were examined and connection between stall type and repeat breeding (RB), dystocia, retained placenta and a connection between resting surface types and RB and clinical mastitis were found to be important. Considering their economic reflections, it can be said that results are quite important to the Turkish dairy industry.

Effects of a fentanyl-propofol mixture on propofol injection pain: a randomized clinical trial

Background: Propofol injection pain is a common problem that can be very distressing for patients. We compared the effects of injection with saline followed by injection with a fentanyl-propofol mixture, injection with fentanyl followed by a propofol injection, and injection with saline followed by propofol alone on propofol injection pain. Methods: The patients were assigned randomly to one of three groups. A rubber tourniquet was placed on the forearm to produce venous occlusion for 1 min. Before anesthesia induction, group C (control, n = 50) and group M (fentanylpropofol mixture, n = 50) received 5 ml of isotonic saline, while group F (fentanyl, n = 50) received 2 μg/kg of fentanyl. After the tourniquet was released, groups C and F received 5 ml of propofol and group M received 5 ml of a mixture containing 20 ml of propofol and 4 ml of fentanyl. At 10 s after the study drugs were given, a standard question about the comfort of the injection was asked of the patient. We used a verbal rating scale to evaluate propofol injection pain. Statistical analyses were performed with Student’s t-tests and Fisher’s exact tests; P < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The demographic data were similar among the groups. In group M, the number of patients reporting propofol injection pain was significantly lower than in groups F and C (both P < 0.001). No patient in group F or M experienced severe pain, whereas 24 patients (48%) had severe pain in group C (both P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study shows that a fentanyl-propofol mixture was more effective than fentanyl pretreatment or a placebo in preventing propofol injection pain.

The Effect of Abraxane on Cell Kinetic Parameters of HeLa Cells

Abraxane (nab-paclitaxel) is a member of the group of nano chemotherapeutics. It is approved for metastatic breast cancer and non small cell lung cancer. Trials for several cancer types including gynecological cancers, head and neck, and prostatic cancer are being studied. In this study, the antiproliferative and apoptotic effect of abraxane was evaluated on HeLa cell line originated from human cervix carcinoma. Three different doses ($D_1$=10 nM, $D_2$=50 nM, $D_3$=100 nM) were administered to HeLa cells for 24, 48 and 72 h. The 50 nM dose of abraxane decreased DNA synthesis from 4.62-0.08%, mitosis from 3.36-1.89% and increased apoptosis from 10.6-30% at 72 h. Additionally, tripolar metaphase plates were seen in mitosis preparations. In this study, abraxane effected cell kinetic parameters significantly. This results are consistent with other studies in the literature.

Design and Analysis of A Modular Learning Based Cross-Coupled Control Algorithm for Multi-Axis Precision Positioning Systems

Increasing demand for micro/nano-technology related equipment resulted in growing interest for precisionpositioning systems. In this paper a modular controller combining cross-coupled control and iterative learningcontrol approaches to improve contour and tracking accuracy at the same time is presented. Instead of using thestandard error estimation technique, a computationally efficient and modular contour error estimation techniqueis used. The new controller is more suitable for tracking arbitrary nonlinear contours and easier to implement tomulti-axis systems. Stability and convergence analysis for the proposed controller is presented with the necessaryconditions. Effectiveness of the control design is verified with simulations and experiments on a two-axis positioningsystem. The resulting positioning system achieves nanometer level contouring and tracking performance.
