<P>TiO2nanoparticle (NP)/ITO nanowire (NW) nanocomposites for use as photoelectrode materials were fabricated to improve the charge collection efficiency in solid state dye sensitized solar cells (ss-DSSCs). The average current density for ss-DSSCs containing TiO2NP/ITO NW arrays was 7.2 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>that was 98% higher than that for the conventional TiO2NP ss-DSSCs. The intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS) studies exhibited that the electron diffusion length of TiO2NP/ITO-NW nanocomposite ss-DSSCs was in the range of 4.3-5.6 μm, longer than that of TiO2NP solar cells (2.6-4.1 μm). The longer diffusion length was responsible for the boosted current densities of TiO2NP/ITO NW nanocomposite ss-DSSCs. We also employed the TiO2NP/ITO NW nanocomposite photoelectrode to inorganic-organic perovskite solar cells whose energy conversion efficiency was 7.5%.</P>

<P>Hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles with various morphologies such as sphere, rod, whisker, and platelet have attracted a great deal of scientific and technological interest for their broad utilization as reinforcing agents in bone cement, bone fillers, drug carriers, and adsorbents for chromatography. In this Article, a simple method to control the morphology of HAp particles by adjusting the initial pH of precursors and the amount of gelatin and urea additions is introduced. Initially formed calcium phosphate products such as octacalcium phosphate (OCP), hydroxyapatite (HAp), and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) are found to be altered by changing the pH of solutions, which induces variation of HAp morphology as well as phase transformation route to HAp. From the observation of HAp formation behavior, the addition of gelatin is revealed to retard HAp formation as well as to change the aspect ratio of HAp particles, which is ascribed to strong adsorption of gelatin on the surface of calcium phosphate. Also, urea is observed to boost HAp formation rate by enhancing hydrolysis reaction. Developmental Characteristics and Life History of the Korean Native Fire-fly, Luciola Lateralis

To study the ecological characteristics of the Korean native firefly, Luciola lateralis, development and life history of L. lateralis were investigated throughout the indoor rearing. Average size of egg with an oval shape was 0.51×0.56 mm and an egg period of L. lateralis was approximately 25.8 days. The larvae were pupated at the 5th instar and the body length of the matured larvae was 15.8 mm. The total periods of larval stage to the end of the 5th instar were approximately 271.7 days. Pupae formed soil cocoon and average pupal period was approximately 28.7 days. Average number of eggs oviposited by a female was approximately 97. The body size of female in the pupa and adult were larger that that of male.

Chorion(egg-shell) morphology of the F1 hybrid between Bombyx mori and Bombyx mandarina has been observed by scanning electron microscope and chorion protein was analyzed by electrophoresis. The chorion surface structure of F1, hybrids in the lateral (flat) region was similar to that of maternal line. The F1, hybrids chorion was found to have basically a three layer structure. The middle and inner layer were very much like those of the Bombyx mandarina and Bombyx mori. There were many conic pillar structures in the outer layer of the F1, hybrid, which was similar to Bombyx mandarina. This conic pillar structure had a thin cover layer was more clear in the dorsal and ventral side of the F1, hybrid chorion. The conic pillar structure of Bombyx mandarina was found to be dominant in F1 hybrid chorion irrespective of their maternal line. Major components of chorion protein were analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis and found to have isoelectric points in the range of pH 4.0-6.5 and molecular weight 10 to 50 kd. F1 hybrid chorion protein components related directly to those of the maternal line. The conic pillar structure was dominat characteristic and it was present in all F1 hybrid.

A crude crystal of phytoecdysone was obstainde 355 mg per Kg dry radix of A. japonica, and it was identified to ß-ecdysone by TLC. Feeding silkworm on mulberry leaves sprayed with the extract, mounting time shortened and pupation ration improved. The feeding effects of the extract was differed according to the rearing seasons, spring and summer. In spring season, only mounting time shortened without any difference in pupation ration from the control. In summer season, not only mounting time shortened, but also pupation ration remarkably advanced.

Background: The rapid urease test (RUT) is a major diagnostic tool for detecting Helicobacter pylori infection. This study aimed to establish an objective method for measuring the color changes in the RUT kit to improve the test’s diagnostic accuracy. Methods: A UV-visible spectrophotometer was selected as the colorimeter; experiments were conducted in three stages to objectively identify the color changes in the RUT kit. Results: First, the urea broth solution showed an identifiable color change from yellow to red as the pH increased by 0.2. The largest transmittance difference detected using the UV-visible spectrophotometer was observed at a 590-nm wavelength. Second, the commercialized RUT kit also showed a gradual color change according to the pH change detected using the UV-visible spectrophotometer. Third, 13 cases of negative RUT results with a biopsy specimen and 16 of positive RUT results were collected. The transmittance detected using the UV-visible spectrophotometer showed a clear division between the positive and negative RUT groups; the largest difference was observed at a 559-nm wavelength. The lowest transmittance in the negative RUT group was 64, while the highest in the positive RUT group was 56, at the 559-nm wavelength. The UV-visible spectrophotometry reading showed a consistency of 92.7% compared with that of manual reading. Conclusion: A transmittance of 60 at a 559-nm wavelength detected using UV-visible spectrophotometer can be used as a cutoff value for interpreting RUT results; this will help develop an automatic RUT kit reader with a high accuracy.

N/A Purpose: Atopic dermatitis is characterized by immunologic abnormalities including evidence for reduced IFN-γ production with increased IL-4 production. Previous open trials have suggested efficacy for recombinant IFN-γ in treatment of severe atopic dermatitis. Here we report the results of treatment with IFN-γ in 5 patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Methods: Atopic dermatitis was diagnosed according to typical clinical symptoms. Patients were treated with IFN- r for 6 weeks. Patients received 2×10(6) units/m IFN-γ by subcutaneous injection. Serum IgE levels, total eosinophil counts with hemoglobin(Hb) concentrations, hematocrit(Hct)s, white blood cell counts(WBC), lymphocyte fractions, eosinophil fractions and platelet counts were examined before treatment and 1 week and 6 week after treatment. Results: The skin lesions of all patients begun to be improved after 3 times of injection. As estimated by patients, responses showed significant improvement. Three of five patients were resolved completely who showed complete clearance of skin manifestation. And remained two patients show dramatic improvement with mild some skin lesions. WBC counts, Hemoglobins, Hematocrits, lymphocyte fractions, eosinophil fractions and platelet counts was not significantly changed before and after IFN-γ treatment. Serum IgE levels were not markedly elevated and not reduced after IFN-γ treatment. But total eosinophil counts were decreased 1 week after treatment and reduced to normal range 6 weeks after treatment. Conclusions: Five severe atopic dermatitis patients who did not respond to previous treatment, who had showed complication to loeal steroid treatment and who had severe skin lesions were treated with IFN-γ. They showed marked improvement in skin lesions after IFN-γ treatment and three of them showed complete clearance of skin lesions. Total eosinophil count was regarded as an excellent indicator for diagnosis, evaluation of therapeutic effects of IFN-γ. IFN-γ may be a suitable immunotherapy modality in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and futher studies for the action mechanism of IFN-γ in atopic dermatitis might be needed.
