        Equal - Channel Angular Pressing : A Novel Tool for Microstructural Control

        The principles of equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing are reviewed. It is demonstrated that this processing procedure is capable of introducing an ultrafine grain size into bulk materials and the precise nature of the microstructure is dependent upon the total strain introduced by the pressing. When the strain is sufficiently high, it is possible to achieve very high tensile ductilities at high strain rates, thereby providing the potential for substantially increasing the viability of superplastic forming in the metal forming industry.

        Development of open source Web-GIS platform for threedimensional geologic modeling and visualization

        An Open Source Web-GIS platform for Geologic Voxel (Geo-Vox) modeling and visualization, has been developed. Geo-Vox provides a comprehensive framework by integrating GIS, relational database, open geospatial standards-compliant web mapping engine, 2-D and 3-D rendering libraries for geologic modeling. Free and Open Source Software for Geoinformatics (FOSS4G) stack comprising of GRASS GIS, PostgreSQL, MapServer, OpenLayers and three.js JavaScript 3-D library have been used to implement the system. Geo-Vox overcomes several limitations of solid modeling by construction of model based on an intuitive logical relation between geologic units and boundary surfaces. Two-dimensional visualization allows rendering of horizontal and vertical sections at user-defined planes. The voxel model can also be exported in a format amenable for rendering as 3-D solid model. Geo-Vox is unique, in that, (a) logics used to create the model are easily comprehensible to geologist (b) offers high degree of interoperability (c) leverages FOSS4G stack to implement a comprehensive geologic modeling tool that is hitherto unavailable. The functionality of Geo-Vox is demonstrated using data derived from published geologic map. The results confirm the potential of Geo-Vox to provide an interoperable and scalable framework for delivery of value-added geological information for a variety technical and societal needs.

      • Partial Migratable Hierarchical File System for Satellite Image Database

        Recent attention on global environmental changes has stimulated the development of large scale global information systems. Satellite images play a very important role for understanding these global changes. We designed and implemented a partially migratable file system based on 8mm tape robotics for satellite image database. The file system migrates only the necessary portion of a file onto the disk. Two real application programs: radiometric/geometric correction and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) generation, were chosen and executed using our experimental file system. Large performance improvements were achieved when compared to the conventional file level migration scheme.

        Sector Governance to Support Transdisciplinary Study in Japan: Focusing on Cases of Government Sector, Profit Sector and Non-Profit Sector

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the sector-by-sector governance of Japan for support of transdisciplinary study, focusing on the cases of government sector, for-profit sector, and non-profit private sector. The research method of case study is applied to an example of the government sector, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s ‘World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI)’, the ‘Beyond AI Institute’ by SoftBank Group Corp. as an example of the for-profit sector, along with the support of a research project by the Foundation for the Fusion of Science and Technology as an example of the non-profit private sector. Then these cases were analyzed particularly in terms of coherence, flexibility, and intensity. Using forms such as consortiums, which are irrespective of the existent university ranks, the advancement of support system for the commercialization of corporate-laboratory links and securing diversity of targets for convergence support and integrated management, it was concluded that the coherence, intensity, and flexibility of governance in support of transdisciplinary study could be increased as a result.

        Tail suspension is useful as a sarcopenia model in rats

        Sarcopenia promotes skeletal muscle atrophy and exhibits a high mortality rate. Its elucidation is of the highest clinical importance, but an animal experimental model remains controversial. In this study, we investigated a simple method for studying sarcopenia in rats.Muscle atrophy was investigated in 24-week-old, male, tail-suspended (TS), Sprague Dawley and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Age-matched SD rats were used as a control group. The skeletal muscle mass weight, muscle contraction, whole body tension (WBT), cross-sectional area (CSA), and Muscle RING finger-1 (MuRF-1) were assessed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to evaluate the MuRF-1 levels. Two muscles, the extensor digitorum longus and soleus muscles, were selected for representing fast and slow muscles, respectively. All data, except CSA, were analyzed by a one-way analysis of variance, whereas CSA was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Muscle mass weight, muscle contraction, WBT, and CSA were significantly lower in the SHR ( n = 7) and TS ( n = 7) groups than in the control group, whereas MuRF-1 expression was dominant. TS and SHR presented sarcopenic phenotypes in terms of muscle mass, muscle contraction and CSA. TS is a useful technique for providing muscle mass atrophy and weakness in an experimental model of sarcopenia in rats.

      • Effectiveness of tape migration for satellite image database

        In this paper, we present a tape migration mechanism for a scalable tape archiver and its performance evaluation using access logs of our satellite image database through networks by WWW (World Wide Web), gopher and FTP. Simulation results show that the tape migration mechanisms can make the average response time of the scalable tape archiver shorter than sufficient cache disks. Especially, the tape migration is very efficient for the simultaneous accesses to the sequential images observed at a period because the tape migration mechanisms make it possible to access the tapes storing the sequential images in parallel even if they are in an element archiver, while the cache mechanisms is not effective. Additionally, the tape migration and the cache disks supplement with each other. Using both of them improves performance of the scalable tape archiver furthermore.

      • Scalable Tape Archiver and its Application to Satellite Image Database

        In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the scalable tape archiver, which we are now constructing for satellite image database. The scalable tape archiver connects as many number of 8mm tape archivers (element archivers) as possible. In the scalable tape archiver, robotics can exchange a cassette tape between two adjacent element archivers mechanically. To use the tape drives efficiently and to locate frequently accessed cassettes in appropriate positions, two load balancing mechanisms, foreground migration and background migration, are introduced to the scalable tape archiver. The foreground migration is to transfer a cassette in an element archives to another element archives whose drives are free when all of the drives in the element archives are busy The background migration is to transfer a cassette to redistribute frequently accessed cassettes when the archives is not busy Both migration strategies can reduce access response time and improve robustness of drive failures. In addition, we explain the user interface of satellite image database using our experimental scalable tape archives. We connect the scalable tape archives and World Wide Web server. Therefore, users can access our satellite image database system through WWW easily.

        재난 발생시 지방자치단체 수준 수원(受援) 체제 구축 방안 ─ 일본 고베(神戶)시 수원계획 사례를 중심으로 ─

        본 연구는 재난 발생시 지원을 받는 주체로서 지자체를 파악하고 지원을 받는 수원(受援) 체제 구축방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 구체적으로 일본 고베 시(神戶市) 수원계획 사례에서 수원계획의 기본 개념, 체제, 업무선정 및 관련 계획간 관계 등에 대해 조사하였다. 선행연구 검토 및 조사 분석을 통해 향후 한국 지자체에 대한 시사점으로 재난 발생시 업무 중에서 지자체 단독으로는 수행이 어려울 업무를 사전에 확인해 둘 필요가 있음을 밝혔다. 또한 장애인, 고령자, 여성, 어린이 등이 무엇을 필요로 하는지 지원을 받는 측 목소리를 사회적 경제조직 등을 통해 평상시부터 파악하고 수원계획에 반영할 필요가 있음을 제시하였다. Plan for receiving outside support should be developed by local government before disaster because local government can become a receiver of outside support. This study researches a plan for receiving outside support in Kobe City, Japan. The plan includes basic concept, system, task selection and consistency with other related plans. For local government in Korea, significant needs of vulnerable people as a receiver is expected to be included in the plan through social economic organization.
