Objective: The term “weekend effect” refers to an increase in the mortality rate for hospitalizations occurring on weekends versus weekdays. In this study, we investigated whether such an effect exists in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (currently the standard treatment for this condition) at a single center in Japan. Methods: We surveyed 151 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (75 and 76 patients were treated during daytime and nighttime, respectively) from January 2019 to June 2021. The items evaluated in this analysis were the rate of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale, mortality, and procedural treatment time. Results: The rates of modified Rankin Scale ≤2 or prestroke scale and mortality at 90 days after treatment did not differ significantly between daytime and nighttime (41.3% vs. 29.0%, p=0.11; 14.7% vs. 11.8%, p=0.61, respectively). The door-to-groin time tended to be shorter during daytime versus nighttime (57 [IQR: 42.5–70] min vs. 70 [IQR: 55–82]) min, p=0.0507). Conclusions: This study did not reveal differences in treatment outcome between daytime and nighttime in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Therefore, the “weekend effect” was not observed in our institution.
n-Doping of Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Pyridine-boryl Radicals
Naoki Tanaka,Aoi Hamasuna,Tsuyohiko Fujigaya 한국고분자학회 2021 한국고분자학회 학술대회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.46 No.2
The chemical doping of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using electron donor and acceptor molecules is a crucial step for controlling the frontier orbital energy gap of SWCNTs. This means that SWCNTs are a promising material for electronics applications such as thermoelectric conversion and thin-film transistors, due to their flexibility, stability and light weight. Among all chemical dopants, 2 organic dopants containing hetero atoms are important materials as they permit fine controllability of the doping level; they also provide stability due to the flexibility of their structural design. In this study, we found that pyridine-boryl (py-boryl) radicals serve as efficient electron-doping reagents for SWCNTs, in which the doping mechanism comprises electron transfer from the py-boryl radical to the SWCNT. The formation of a stable py-boryl cation is essential for efficient doping; the captodative effect of the py-boryl cation is important to this process.
Colon Capsule Endoscopy for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Naoki Hosoe,Yukie Hayashi,Haruhiko Ogata 대한소화기내시경학회 2020 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.53 No.5
Colon capsule endoscopy was initially introduced in 2006. Since the results of a prospective study to evaluate first-generation coloncapsule endoscopy efficacy for the detection of colonic neoplasia were unsatisfactory, second-generation colon capsule endoscopywas developed and reported in 2009. In this review article, we provide an overview of the current state of colon capsule endoscopyfor evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease in a clinical setting and describe our clinical experience with this technology and itsapplication. Among the various types of inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis is the primary target for application of coloncapsule endoscopy. Nevertheless, the initial results of studies using first-generation colon capsule endoscopy to evaluate inflammationwere unclear. More recently, second-generation colon capsule endoscopy has provided higher accuracy for assessment of inflammationin patients with ulcerative colitis. Colon capsule endoscopy enables noninvasive observation (with reduced volume preparation) ofmucosal inflammation severity in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Clinical philosophy that means “philosophy on the spot of suffering,” is a challenge of innovation in the academic philosophy. It seeks philosophical thinking as activity situated in our actual life. This paper shows the outline of clinical philosophy and its educational program provided in Osaka University that consists of theoretical studies, training course for the practice and service learning. Furthermore, it tries to present some key notions for the philosophical practice such as co-inquiry, care of the self, self-transformation and emancipation.
A Propaganda Film Subverting Ethnic Hierarchy?: "Suicide Squad at the Watchtower" and Colonial Korea
Naoki Mizuno 고려대학교 민족문화연구원 2012 Cross-Currents Vol.- No.5
In the film Suicide Squad at the Watchtower (1943), the appearance of a Korean female physician carries with it the potential to subvert the film’s representation of the colonial ethnic hierarchy. The film’s director, Ch’oe In-gyu, had in his earlier film Homeless Angels presented the edifying message that a Korean female orphan could aspire to become a physician. This message was also incorporated into Suicide Squad at the Watchtower. In these two films the story of a Korean woman who studies to become a physician (or at least desires to become one) unfolds through the same actress, Kim Sin-jae. The suggestion that a Korean could achieve a social position equal to or even higher than a Japanese introduced the possibility of subverting the colonial ethnic hierarchy. But while the screenplay for the film had explicitly portrayed the female physician, the film version suppressed the representation, making it less evident. Nevertheless, it is possible to see Suicide Squad at the Watchtower’s enlightened message as an element with the potential to upset the ruling colonial order.
