Neural network based model for seismic assessment of existing RC buildings
Naci Caglar,Zehra Sule Garip 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2013 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.12 No.2
The objective of this study is to reveal the sufficiency of neural networks (NN) as a securer, quicker, more robust and reliable method to be used in seismic assessment of existing reinforced concrete buildings. The NN based approach is applied as an alternative method to determine the seismic performance of each existing RC buildings, in terms of damage level. In the application of the NN, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) with a back-propagation (BP) algorithm is employed using a scaled conjugate gradient. NN based model wasd eveloped, trained and tested through a based MATLAB program. The database of this model was developed by using a statistical procedure called P25 method. The NN based model was also proved by verification set constituting of real existing RC buildings exposed to 2003 Bingol earthquake. It is demonstrated that the NN based approach is highly successful and can be used as an alternative method to determine the seismic performance of each existing RC buildings.
Failure analysis of reinforced concrete frames with short column effect
Naci Caglar,Mahir Mutlu 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2009 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.6 No.5
Short column effect is cause to failure of columns which may result in severe damages or even collapse during earthquakes. The scope of the study is mainly to reveal the effect of short column on the holistic behaviour of the buildings. The nonlinear analysis of 31 different frame buildings containing short column problem are carried out using finite element method. The finite element models were selected by 2 bays and 3 stories. Since the short columns are generally seen in the first storey of the buildings, in the study, they are only constructed in the same storey. The adverse effect of the short column on the response of buildings was shown in terms of the total load factor and displacement capacity of building. The response of buildings in terms of ground storey displacements is presented in figures and discussed. It is revealed that if the window openings are constructed along the bays, the total load capacity is decreased 85% compared with reference model in which all of bays are filled with infill walls.

To be able to understand the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members, cross sectional behavior should be known well. Cross sectional behavior can be best evaluated by moment-curvature relationship. On a reinforced concrete cross section moment-curvature relationship can be best determined by both experimentally or numerically with some complicated iteration methods. Making these experiments or iterations manually is very difficult and not practical. The aim of this study is to research the efficiency of Neural Networks (NN) as a more secure and robust method to obtain the moment-curvature relationship of circular RC columns. It is demonstrated that the NN based model is highly successful to determine the moment-curvature relationship of circular reinforced concrete columns.
Students` Visual Representation of Mathematics
( Naci John C Trance ),( Roger B Manapo ),( Jonny B Pormei ) 한국과학교육학회 2012 한국과학교육학회지 Vol.32 No.8
This paper takes another approach in assessing students`` perception of mathematics. Instead of asking for verbal description of the students`` perception of mathematics, we asked the respondents who were all college students to draw their perception of mathematics. This relatively new approach enabled students to take a second look of how they perceived math and, at the same time, explored students`` creativity and provided a less austere appearance to mathematics which was taken usually in a more formal and severe manner. This approach of assessing students`` perception of mathematics generated new information that could not be normally gleaned from other approaches like Likert Scale. Some drawings of mathematics of the respondents reinforced their math affect towards mathematics. For those who hated math, their drawings revealed so the same is true with those who loved mathematics. Examining the visual representations of mathematics and looking for commonalities, the researcher found a number of interesting themes that may shed some light to educators`` understanding of students`` math affect.
The isomorphism between two fundamental groups by Cayley graphs
˙I. Naci Cang¨ul,A. Sinan C¸ evik,¨Ozden Koruo˘glu 장전수학회 2008 Advanced Studies in Contemporary Mathematics Vol.17 No.1
LetG1 and G2 be two nite groups and letCay(G1,S1) and Cay(G2,S2) be the corresponding Cayley graphs of these groups, respectively. By [2] and [8], one can dene the fundamental groupπ1(Γ,v) by using any connected graph Γ with a fixed vertex v. In this paper we give sufficient conditions for any two fundamental groups which are obtained by Cayley graphs Cay(G1,S1) and Cay(G2,S2) to be isomorphic. At the final part of the paper, we present some examples of this result.

Objective : It is well known that changes in cerebral hemodynamics occur after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Osmo-regulation in the brain is important for maintaining a constant milieu in the central nervous system. Nevertheless, to our knowledge, early osmolarity changes after minor head injury have not been studied until now. Methods : In this study, serum osmolarity was measured in 99 patients with minor head trauma. As a control group, blood samples were drawn from 99 patients who had a minor trauma in an extremity. Serum osmolarity was estimated using a fully automatic biochemical autoanalyzer within the first 3 hours after the trauma. Results : The mean serum osmolarity levels were $286.08{\pm}10.1\;mOsm/L$ in the study group and $290.94{\pm}5.65\;mOsm/L$ in the control group (p<0.001). However, after age adjustment between the study and control groups, this statistical significance was found to be valid only for patients over 30 years of age. Conclusion : It was noted that serum osmolarity levels decrease in the first 3 hours following minor head trauma in patients over 30 years of age. Further studies into this area could provide guidance for the management/treatment of elderly patients.

Purpose: To test whether Crowe type is related to femoral alignment and leg length discrepancy by evaluating the preoperative lengths and coronal alignment of femurs, pelvic parameters and hip morphology of patients who underwent primary hip arthroplasty due to coxarthrosis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Materials and Methods: Medical records of patients with coxarthrosis secondary to DDH who were treated with total hip arthroplasty at Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine between 2008 and 2017 were reviewed. The mechanical axis of lower limbs was analyzed; pelvic height and femoral and tibial lengths were measured. All femurs were classified according to the Dorr classification. Results: A total of 97 patients were eligible for analysis and were diagnosed with unilateral DDH (n=51) or bilateral DDH (n=46). In those diagnosed with unilateral DDH, the affected pelvis, femur, and tibia were often shorter than the unaffected side. In those diagnosed with bilateral DDH, femoral and pelvic lengths were unpredictable. In the femoral coronal alignment test, data varied widely but were within normal limits. The difference in the Dorr types of femurs was significant between dysplastic and normal sides of patients with unilateral DDH (P=0.001) but not those with bilateral DDH. Conclusion: Especially in patients with unilateral DDH, pelvic heights and femoral and tibial lengths on the affected side may be shorter compared with unaffected side regardless of the Crowe type. Femoral coronal alignment is unpredictable for both groups. Careful preoperative analyses of femoral coronal alignment and pelvic length are advised.
Changing relationship between sets using convolution sums of restricted divisor functions
Ismail Naci Cangul,Daeyeoul Kim 한국전산응용수학회 2023 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.41 No.3
There are real life situations in our lives where the things are changing continuously or from time to time. It is a very important problem for one whether to continue the existing relationship or to form a new one after some occasions. That is, people, companies, cities, countries, etc. may change their opinion or position rapidly. In this work, we think of the problem of changing relationships from a mathematical point of view and think of an answer. In some sense, we comment these changes as power changes. Our number theoretical model will be based on this idea. Using the convolution sum of the restricted divisor function $E$, we obtain the answer to this problem.
