Purpose: To characterize the relationship between serum estradiol levels and the expression of glucose transporter type 4 (Glut4) in the pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles in female rats. Methods: The muscles were excised from virgin rats during the metestrus and proestrus stages of the estrous cycle, and from sham and ovariectomized rats implanted with empty or estradiol benzoate–filled capsules. The expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) was inspected in the muscles at metestrus and proestrus. Relative Glut4 expression, glycogen content, and serum glucose levels were measured. Appropriate statistical tests were done to identify significant differences (P≤0.05). Results: The pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles expressed ERα and ERβ. Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle were higher at proestrus than at metestrus. No significant changes were observed in the iliococcygeus muscle. In ovariectomized rats, the administration of estradiol benzoate increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle alone. Conclusions: High serum estradiol levels increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle, but not in the iliococcygeus muscle.

The implementation of imaging methods that enable sensitive and specific observation of anatomical structures has been a constant in the evolution of endodontic therapy. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables 3-dimensional (3D) spatial anatomical navigation in the 3 volumetric planes (sagittal, coronal and axial) which translates into great accuracy for the identification of endodontic pathologies/conditions. CBCT interpretation consists of 2 main components: (i) the generation of specific tasks of the image and (ii) the subsequent interpretation report. A systematic and reproducible method to review CBCT scans can improve the accuracy of the interpretation process, translating into greater precision in terms of diagnosis and planning of endodontic clinical procedures. MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2023. This narrative review addresses the theoretical concepts, elements of interpretation and applications of the CBCT scan in endodontics. In addition, the contents and rationale for reporting 3D endodontic imaging are discussed.

<P>Trivalent erbium (Er3+)-doped K-Sr-Al phosphate glasses were prepared and studied their spectroscopic properties as a function of Er2O3 concentration. Judd-Ofelt analysis has been carried out for 1.0 mol% Er2O3-doped phosphate glass and in turn radiative properties have been evaluated for the excited levels of Er3+ ion. The radiative lifetime for the (4)t(13/2) level was found to be higher for the present glass when compared to other Er3+-doped glasses. The Er3+-doped glasses exhibit intense near infrared emission at 1.53 mu m corresponds to I-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) transition as well as green emission at 546 nm corresponding to S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) under 980 nm and 488 nm excitations, respectively. The emission cross-section spectrum for 1.0 mol% of Er2O3-doped glass has been evaluated using McCumber theory. The gain cross-section has been evaluated as a function of population inversion, which revealed that the lasing action would be achieved at 1.53 mu m for a population inversion about 40%. Decay curves for the I-4(13/2) level were measured and lifetimes have been determined for the studied glasses. The results indicate that the present glasses could be useful for laser as well as optical amplifiers at 1.53 mu m. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.</P>

Purpose: To evaluate the expression of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and its receptor, GDNF family receptor alpha subunit 1 (GFRα-1) in the pelvic (middle third) vagina and, particularly, in the paravaginal ganglia of nulliparous and primiparous rabbits. Methods: Chinchilla-breed female rabbits were used. Primiparas were killed on postpartum day 3 and nulliparas upon reaching a similar age. The vaginal tracts were processed for histological analyses or frozen for Western blot assays. We measured the ganglionic area, the Abercrombie-corrected number of paravaginal neurons, the cross-sectional area of the neuronal somata, and the number of satellite glial cells (SGCs) per neuron. The relative expression of both GDNF and GFRα-1 were assessed by Western blotting, and the immunostaining was semiquantitated. Unpaired two-tailed Student t -test or Wilcoxon test was used to identify statistically significant differences (P≤0.05) between the groups. Results: Our findings demonstrated that the ganglionic area, neuronal soma size, Abercrombie-corrected number of neurons, and number of SGCs per neuron were similar in nulliparas and primiparas. The relative expression of both GDNF and GFRα- 1 was similar. Immunostaining for both GDNF and GFRα-1 was observed in several vaginal layers, and no differences were detected regarding GDNF and GFRα-1 immunostaining between the 2 groups. In the paravaginal ganglia, the expression of GDNF was increased in neurons, while that of GFRα-1 was augmented in the SGCs of primiparous rabbits. Conclusions: The present findings suggest an ongoing regenerative process related to the recovery of neuronal soma size in the paravaginal ganglia, in which GDNF and GFRα-1 could be involved in cross-talk between neurons and SGCs.

Aguamiel is a beverage produced by some Agave species that is consumed in its fresh or fermented form. Despite its uses and popularity, seasonal effects on its microbial and chemical profiles are unknown. In this study, using aguamiel collected from A. salmiana and A. atrovirens during different seasons, we identified microorganisms by sequencing the 16S and 18S rDNA genes and determined their chemical profiles. In total, 49 microbial strains were identified (38 bacteria and 11 yeasts). The highest richness and biodiversity were observed during winter and summer. Different lactic acid bacteria and yeast genera with potential industrial applications were identified, such as Acetobacter, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, and Clavispora. The analysis of the chemical profiles indicated the presence of maltooligosaccharides and fructooligosaccharides, which are associated with human health improvements, during spring in Agave aguamiel. Aguamiel can be used in the food industry due to its microbiological and chemical profiles.

One of the proposed mechanisms for the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the increase of end products of advanced glycosylation (AGEs), which bind to its receptor (RAGE), favoring nephron cellular damage. An isoform of this receptor is soluble RAGE (sRAGE), which can antagonize AGE-altered intracellular signaling. It has known that green tea extract (GTE) increases the expression of sRAGE, but it is unknown whether this could improve kidney function. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the administration of GTE on the concentrations of sRAGE, renal function, and metabolic profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and DN. A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out in 39 patients who received GTE (400 mg every 12 h) or placebo for 3 months. sRAGE levels, renal function, and metabolic parameters were determined before and after the intervention. In the GTE group, there were statistically significant increase on sRAGE (320.55 ± 157.63 pg/mL vs. 357.59 ± 144.99 pg/mL; P = .04) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR; 66.44 ± 15.17 mL/min/1.73 m2 vs. 71.70 ± 19.33 mL/min/1.73 m2; P = .04), and a statistically significant decrease in fasting serum glucose (7.62 ± 3.00 mmol/L vs. 5.86 ± 1.36 mmol/L; P ≤ .01) and triacylglycerols (1.91 ± 0.76 mmol/L vs. 1.58 ± 0.69; P = .02). Administration of GTE increases the serum concentration of sRAGE and the GFR and decreases the concentration of fasting serum glucose and triacylglycerols. The study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov with the identifier NCT03622762.

Cloud computing is a technology which completely shifts the data to unaware Datacenter (DC) where the cloud service provider (CSP) is responsible for the subscribers’ data and its protection. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a kind of overload threat aims to subvert DC and their resources which leads to resource unavailable to legitimate requestors. In this paper we proposed an effective layered load balancing mechanism which scrutinizes the incoming requestors’ traffic at various layers and each layer outwits some kind of attack traffic. The early network traffic condition prediction paves the way to detect the threats earlier which in turn improves the availability. The significance of the proposed mechanism is detecting the higher rate of overload threats at earlier layers. Constant monitoring and stringent protocol setup for incoming traffic strengthens the proposed mechanism against several kinds of overload threats. Based on the traffic pattern of incoming requestors, the vulnerability is observed and outwitted at various layers. The simulation proved that the mechanism proposed is deployable at an attack-prone DC for resource protection, which would eventually benefit the DC economically as well.

Cloud computing is an advantageous technology, which allows any enterprises to shift their data towards Cloud Service Provider (CSP) end. This shift poses an essential necessity for data being available all the time with a considerable level of security. Availability is an important concern for any subscribers as their sensitive data are prone to attack threats. Resource and data availability are most important security measure. So, blocking the attack traffic towards Data Center (DC) improves availability, but passive outwitting leads to high false positive and negative rate. This affects the legitimate requestors being outwitted. So, the proposed chaotic theory based defense mechanism considers the stability state of traffic and detects the anomaly traffic condition. The anomaly traffic condition is just the passive way of diminishing the effect of overload, but classifying them appropriately and allowing the non-attack case of overload improves the availability and utilization and reduces the false case rates. Considering several cases of overload threats and allowing the legitimate overload case improves efficiency. The simulation results proved that the mechanism proposed is deployable at an attack-prone DC for resource protection, which would eventually benefit the DC economically as well.
