Leading for Safety: A Question of Leadership Focus

Molnar, Malin Mattson,Schwarz, Ulrica Von Thiele,Hellgren, Johnny,Hasson, Henna,Tafvelin, Susanne Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2019 Safety and health at work Vol.10 No.2

Background: There is considerable evidence that leadership influences workplace safety, but less is known about the relative importance of different leadership styles for safety. In addition, a leadership style characterized by an emphasis and a focus on promoting safety has rarely been investigated alongside other more general leadership styles. Methods: Data were collected through a survey to which 269 employees in a paper mill company responded. A regression analysis was conducted to examine the relative roles of transformational, transactional (management-by-exception active; MBEA), and safety-specific leadership for different safety behavioral outcomes (compliance behavior and safety initiative behaviors) and for minor and major injuries. Results: A safety-specific leadership contributed the most to the enhanced safety of the three different kinds of leadership. Transformational leadership did not contribute to any safety outcome over and above that of a safety-specific leadership, whereas a transactional leadership (MBEA) was associated with negative safety outcomes (fewer safety initiatives and increased minor injuries). Conclusion: The most important thing for leaders aiming at improving workplace safety is to continuously emphasize safety, both in their communication and by acting as role models. This highlights the importance for leadership training programs aiming to improve safety to actually focus on safety-promoting communication and behaviors rather than general leadership. Furthermore, an overly monitoring and controlling leadership style can be detrimental to attempts at achieving improved workplace safety.

      • 종교개념의 형성

        Molnar, Attila K . 서울대학교종교학연구회 2001 宗敎學硏究 Vol.20 No.-

Conscientia originated from the Hellenistic idea of syneidesis, or shared feelings of shame and fear of having done wrong. Through the Roman stoics and Aquinas consciemia took a more legalistic and rational nature. However, Luther interprets Conscientia to be no different from faith and as resulting from God's grace rejecting previous notions. It follows that even goodness was not a natural human inclination but a gift from God. One had to follow the dictates of one's conscientia and failing to follow it was sin. It was a radical interpretation that rejected rationality and polemics and it became personal rather than shared. Other than this, the Reformation spread the idea of conscientia as a profane idea of religion and it was during the 17th century that the word religion begins to be used by theologians. Initially, as instigated by Cicero, religion was used as a source of social order and harmony rather than For the attainment of salvation. The profane nature of religion was made more poignant by Machiavelli when he joined the notion of religion with the idea of a republican ideal. Thus, a Ciceronian notion of religion that is stripped of its relevance to truth and salvation is connected to civility and social order. However the envisioned society was not based on conscientia as a dogmatic rule but based on religion as a controlling tool from within. This republican and highly sceptic meaning of religion can be found in Bodin's works also. He assert the importance of religion to social order when he insists that changes in religion can be more calamitous than natural disasters. Like Luther, Bodin too saw that religion was out of the command of the rulers and namely a form of internal control. Yet, as a source of social stability, religion was seen as a social tool without any connection to the other-worldly by secular rulers whose main concern was political. In following this tradition, the Latitudinarians invoked religion to counter the social disorder caused by dogmatic conflicts. Their goal, however, was a theological one not political. This seems ironic but the Latitudinarian conception of religion did not involve the question of truth and salvation but included the idea of being a shared but internalized moral rule. It also was seen as being out of the control of the clerics or any institution. Religion meant control from within which was thought necessary for obedience to moral leaders, loyalty to oaths, and a peaceful society. Tracing its history from the Greek era to after the Reformation, it seems the notion of religion stole the matter of divinity from the clerics and gave it to the populace. There, religion has come to resolve the problem of peaceful living for the ordinary person and not for the secular rulers nor clerics. Through religion, other-worldly force came to be mediated not through external social agents, such as the church, but through internal personal channels.

Felled Forests and Fallowed Fields: Establishing a Narrative of Ecological and Climate Change in Mongol-Era Goryeo

( Aaron Molnar ) 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2023 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.36 No.1

Goryeo (918–1392) was a politically and commercially integrated part of the wider Mongol Empire (1206–1368), while also temporally situated in the difficult transition from the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) to the Little Ice Age (LIA). Yet narratives of Goryeo’s incorporation into the Mongol world remain overwhelmingly focused on politics, economics, and culture. Since Alfred Crosby’s Ecological Imperialism, scholars have increasingly been sensitive to the ecological impacts of imperialism and colonialism, while Geoffrey Parker has highlighted the integral role of climate in human history. This study seeks to combine these two approaches and argues that the confluence of Mongol imperialism and climate change was profoundly impactful on Goryeo’s environment and ecologies. Invasion and incorporation into the Mongol Empire spurred processes of deforestation and agro-ecological transformation, as armies traversed the peninsula, populations were displaced, and capitals were (re)built. Therein, an arguably drier, cooler, and less stable climate compounded anthropocentric agro-ecological dislocation and sylvan ecological disruption. Consequently, political transitions, as in the 1258 fall of the Choe dictatorship and the end of Goryeo itself in 1392, cannot be separated from the climate destabilization of the MWP-LIA transition.

SOME HYPERBOLIC SPACE FORMS WITH FEW GENERATED FUNDAMENTAL GROUPS

        Cavicchioli, Alberto,Molnar, Emil,Telloni, Agnese I. Korean Mathematical Society 2013 대한수학회지 Vol.50 No.2

We construct some hyperbolic hyperelliptic space forms whose fundamental groups are generated by only two or three isometries. Each occurring group is obtained from a supergroup, which is an extended Coxeter group generated by plane re ections and half-turns. Then we describe covering properties and determine the isometry groups of the constructed manifolds. Furthermore, we give an explicit construction of space form of the second smallest volume nonorientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with one cusp.

      • Cost-effective structural health monitoring of FRPC parts for automotive applications

        Mitschang, P.,Molnar, P.,Ogale, A.,Ishii, M. The Korean Society for Composite Materials 2007 Advanced composite materials Vol.16 No.2

In the automobile industry, structural health monitoring of fiber reinforced polymer composite parts is a widespread need for maintenance before breakdown of the functional elements or a complete vehicle. High performance sensors are generally used in many of the structural health monitoring operations. Within this study, a carbon fiber sewing thread has been used as a low cost laminate failure sensing element. The experimentation plan was set up according to the electrical conductance and flexibility of carbon fiber threads, advantages of preforming operations, and sewing mechanisms. The influence of the single thread damages by changing the electrical resistance and monitoring the impact location by using carbon thread sensors has been performed. Innovative utilization of relatively cost-effective carbon threads for monitoring the delamination of metallic inserts from the basic composite laminate structure is a highlighting feature of this study.
