        Contrast in Life Histories of Exploited Fishes and Ecosystem Structures in Coastal Waters off West Canada and East Korea

        By reviewing the history of fishery exploitation in the coastal waters of west Canada and east Korea, related with contrasting life history strategies of the dominant species, the fishery management challenges that each country would face in the upcoming decades were outlined. In the ecosystem of the Canadian western coastal waters, the dominant oceanographic feature is the coastal upwelling domain off the west coast of Vancouver Island, the northernmost extent of the California Current System in the eastern North Pacific. In the marine ecosystem of the eastern coasts of Korea (the Japan/East Sea), a major oceanographic feature is the Tsushima Warm Current, a branch of the Kuroshio Current in the western North Pacific. Fishes in the Canadian ecosystem are dominated by demersal, long-lived species such as flatfish, rockfish, sablefish, and halibut. During summer, migratory pelagic species such as Pacific hake, Pacific salmon, and recently Pacific sardine, move into this area to feed. In the late 1970s, Canada declared jurisdiction for 200 miles from their coastline, and major fisheries species in Canadian waters have been managed with a quota system. The overall fishing intensity off the west coast of Vancouver Island has been relatively moderate compared to Korean waters. Fishes in the ecosystem of the eastern Korean waters are dominated by shortlived pelagic and demersal fish. Historically, Korea has shared marine resources in this area with neighbouring countries, but stock assessments and quotas have only recently (since the late-1990s) been implemented for some major species. In the Korean ecosystem, fisheries can be described as intensive, and many stocks have been rated as overfished. The two ecosystems responded differently to climate impacts such as regime shifts under different exploitation histories. In the future, both countries will face the challenge of global warming and subsequent impacts on ecosystems, necessitating developing adaptive fisheries management plans. The challenges will be contrasting for the two countries: Canada will need to conserve fish populations, while Korea will need to focus on rebuilding depleted fish populations.

        Rheology of flocculated kaolinite dispersions

        Rheological characterisation of flocculated kaolinite pulps has been undertaken to elucidate particle interactions underpinning the dewatering behaviour induced by flocculation with polyethylene oxide (PEO), anionic polyacrylamide (PAM A) and their blends. Shear yield stress $(\tau_y)$ analysis indicated that polymer mediated particle interactions were markedly amplified upon shear of PEG based pulps. In contrast, PAM A based pulps showed a significant decrease in yield values upon shear. Steady stress measurements analysed using a modified Ellis model indicated subtle differences between the respective linear viscoelastic plateaus of the pulps. Furthermore, modified shear thinning behaviour was evident in PEG based pulps. Estimation of elastic and viscous moduli (G', G') was made using dynamic stress analysis for comparison with values determined from vane measurements. Despite a noticeable difference in the magnitude of G' between the two methods, similar trends indicating sheared PEG-based pulps to be more elastic than PAM based pulps, were observed. Floc microstructural observations obtained in support of rheological properties indicate that PEG flocculant induces significantly more compact particle aggregation within the clay pulps under shear consistent with the yield stress data, in contrast to PAM A, or indeed unsheared PEG based pulps. Consequentially, sheared PEG based pulps show significantly improved dewatering behaviour. The implications of the results, potential benefits and drawbacks of flocculation with PEG and PAM A are discussed with respect to improvements in current dewatering processes used in the minerals industry.

        Blue bottle light: lecture demonstrations of homogeneous and heterogeneous photo-induced electron transfer reactions

        The classic, non-photochemical blue bottle experiment involves the reaction of methylene blue (MB) with deprotonated glucose, to form a bleached form of the dye, leuco-methylene blue (LMB), and subsequent colour recovery by shaking with air. This reaction is a popular demonstrator of key principles in kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Here it is modified so as to highlight features of homogenous and heterogeneous photoinduced electron transfer (PET) (Pure Appl. Chem., 2007, 79, 293-465) reactions, i.e. blue bottle light experiments. The homogeneous blue bottle light experiment uses methylene blue, MB, as the photo-sensitizer and triethanolamine as the sacrificial electron donor. Visible light irradiation of this system leads to its rapid bleaching, followed by the ready restoration of its original colour upon shaking away from the light source. The heterogeneous blue bottle light experiment uses titania as the photo-sensitizer, MB as a redox indicator and glucose as the sacrificial electron donor. UVA light irradiation of this system leads to the rapid bleaching of the MB and the gradual restoration of its original colour with shaking and standing. The latter 'dark' step can be made facile and more demonstrator-friendly by using platinised titania particles. These two photochemical versions of the blue bottle experiment are used to explore the factors which underpin homogeneous and heterogeneous PET reactions and provide useful demonstrations of homogeneous and heterogeneous photochemistry.

        Remittances and GDP in Jamaica: An ARDL Bounds Testing Approach to Cointegration

        Similar to other developing nations, Jamaica’s remittances, specifically inflows, are an important source of income support and foreign exchange earnings. Anecdotally, much has been said about the relationship between remittances and GDP in this country. Yet, less has been established using rigorous statistical inference. We test for unit roots with structural breaks and use the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration to help fill this lacuna in the literature on Jamaica. Using annual data for the 1976–2014 period, we examine the relationship between GDP and remittances, both measured in constant 2010 US dollar terms, aswecontrol for thecommon determinants of economic growth. The main finding is that GDP and remittances are cointegrated relationship wherein they both reinforce each other positively. This finding is statistically robust as the ARDL models have well-behaved errors and parameters that are generally stable over the period. We discuss policy implications of this finding.

        Conformation Studies by Circular Dichroism and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Myelin P2 Protein and Two of its Peptides

        The conformation studies of myelin P2 protein and two of its major peptides were carried out using circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy in water and in lipid environments. Significant conformational changes occur when the protein or peptides were bound to gangliosides. Similar effects were also found in trifluoroethanol solutions. The conformational features of P2 protein and its major peptides were discussed in relation to the environmental changes and the disease-inducing effects.

        Spatiotemporal Distribution of Pacific Anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) Eggs in the West Sea of Korea

        Pacific anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) eggs were collected during the spawning season (2000-2003) using a revised ring net in the coastal waters adjacent to the Geum River Estuary in the West Sea of Korea (Yellow Sea). Anchovy eggs were present from May to September, showing a peak in spawning from June to July when the water temperature and salinity were $17-27^{\circ}C$ and above 30.00 psu, respectively. During the main spawning season, no clear diel cycle (regarding the 24-h sampling period of dusk, night, dawn, and daytime) was detected in the vertical distribution of anchovy eggs near Eocheong Island (50-60m depth). Judging from the developmental stages of the collected eggs, it appeared that anchovies spawned mostly at night and that the eggs hatched at dusk and during the night. The density of anchovy eggs was high in the southwest-northeast direction in June, and spawners appeared to move offshore in July. Mean egg density was higher in June 2002 than in June 2003 when water temperatures and salinities were lower. This study on the spatiotemporal distribution of eggs will contribute to developing management plans for the Pacific anchovy in Korea.

        Economic Misery and Remittances in Jamaica

        Jamaica is noted for having high remittance inflows (remittances) and economic misery, the latter often measured as a function of inflation and unemployment. We examine the relationship between economic misery and remittances in Jamaica from 1985 to 2019. To measure economic misery, we use the Okun and Hanke misery indices. We arrive at two key findings after applying vector error correction modelling, Granger causality testing, and controlling for potentially confounding factors. First, we find cointegration between remittances and our measures of economic misery. Second, there is bidirectional Granger causality between remittances and economic misery. One implication of our finding is that Jamaican policymakers could reduce economic misery through policies to increase remittance flows, such as providing more incentives for migrants to remit.
