Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer, has a significant clinical relevance being associated with a shorter median time to relapse and death and does not respond to endocrine therapy or other available targeted agents. For this reason, identifying the molecular pathways associated with increased aggressiveness, for example the presence of stem cell populations within the tumor and alteration of genes associated with cell cycle regulation represents an important objective in the clinical research into this neoplasm. Methods: To investigate the role of cell cycle progression inhibitor Geminin in triple-negative breast cancers and its potential correlation with stem-like phenotype of this neoplasm, we used tissue microarray technology to build a specific triplenegative breast cancer tissue micro-array. Geminin and cancer stem cell marker CD133 expression was further investigated at the mRNA level for selected breast tumor samples through realtime polymerase chain reaction quantification. Results: Our results showed that CD133 expression was significantly associated to high Geminin expression (p=0.017), a strong association between Ki-67 and tumor grade (p=0.020) and an inverse association between Geminin expression and lymphonode metastases (p=0.058), and a trend of statistically significance between Geminin marker expression and survival of triple-negative breast cancer patients (p=0.076). Conclusion: The strong association between the expression of CD133 and Geminin could be useful in molecular stratification of breast tumors and in particular of triple-negative breast cancers.

Econometric analysis established a negative relationship between labor supply and remittances in Jamaica. We incorporate this ex-post evidence in a general equilibrium model to investigate economy-wide effects of increased remittance inflows. In this model, remittances reduce labor force participation by increasing reservation wages of recipients. This exacerbates the real exchange rate appreciation, hurting Jamaica`s export base and small manufacturing importcompeting sector. Within the narrow margins of maneuver of a highly indebted government, we show that a revenue-neutral policy response of a simultaneous reduction in payroll taxes and increase in sales taxes can effectively counteract these potentially worrisome effects of remittances.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic neurobiological condition with onset in childhood. The disorder is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and/or motor hyperactivity, which often affect the development and social integration of affected subjects. Phenylethylamine (PEA), naturally contained in the Klamath Lake microalgae and concentrated in the Klamin® extract, is an endogenous molecule with a general neuromodulatory activity. It functions as an activator for the neurotransmission of dopamine and other catecholamines, and very low concentrations of PEA may be associated with specific psychological disorders such as ADHD. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Klamin extract in treating a group of subjects diagnosed with ADHD. Thirty subjects, aged 6–15, who had been diagnosed with ADHD according to the DSM-IV TR criteria, were enrolled. The supplement was administered to all the subjects, who reported to an ADHD clinic for routine follow-up visits. Observations were made and data collected over a 6-month period. After 6 months of therapy the subjects appeared to show significant improvements based on assessments of their overall functioning, behavioral aspects related to inattention and hyperactivity–impulsivity, attention functions in both the selective and sustained component and executive functions. The study appears to confirm the initial hypothesis that the Klamin extract may positively affect the expression of ADHD symptoms. Additional larger studies on the effects of Klamin on ADHD are needed to further investigate the potential of this extract in ADHD treatment.

Increasing the spatial resolution of Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a challenge in microanalysis of geological samples. Smaller sizes for the laser beam will allow for (1) high resolution determination of trace element compositions, (2) accurate estimation of crystal/melt partition coefficients, (3) detailed characterization of diffusion profiles, and (4) analysis of fine volcanic glasses. Here, we report about the figures of merit for LA-ICP Quadrupole MS down to a spatial resolution of 5 μm. This study highlights the possibility to achieve suitable limits of detection, accuracy and precision for geological samples even at spatial resolutions of the order of 5 μm. At a beam size of 15 μm, precision (measured as one sigma) and accuracy (expressed as relative deviation from the reference value) are of the order of 10%. At a smaller beam size of 8 um, precision decreases to 15% for concentration above 1.7 μg g–1. As the beam size is decreased to ~5 μm, precision declines to about 15% and 20% for concentrations above 10 μg g–1 using 42Ca and 29Si as internal standard, respectively. Accuracy is better or equal to 10% and 13% at beam sizes of 15 and 10 μm, respectively. When the spatial resolution is increased to 8 μm, accuracy remains better than 15% and 20% for 42Ca and 29Si as internal standard, respectively. We employed such high-resolution techniques to volcanic glasses in ash particles of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Our results are well consistent with the previously reported data obtained at lower spatial resolution, supporting the reliability of the method.
How to optimize aesthetic outcomes in implantbased breast reconstruction

The evolution of breast reconstructive surgery keeps pace with the evolution of breast oncologic surgery. The reconstructive choice should always balance the optimal local control of disease and the best cosmetic result, reflecting an informed decision that is shared with the patient, who is always at the center of the decision-making process. Implant-based breast reconstruction following mastectomy represents a complex choice. In order to obtain optimal results, the following considerations are mandatory: thorough preoperative planning, a complete knowledge of the devices that are used, accurately performed surgery, and appropriate follow-up.

Purpose Prominin1/CD133 has become the ideal marker for cancer stem cells (CSCs) detection in human tumors. In this study we examined the expression of this marker in several breast cancer specimens to associate CSCs percentage with risk factor for this neoplasia. Methods We examined specimens from 12 patients using CD133 and CD44 antibodies for CSCs immunohistochemistry detection and for flow cytometry analysis. For each patient, we also performed the immunohistochemical staining to evaluate the expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, c-erbB-2, Ki67, and E-cadherin markers. A Taqman probe for CD133 was used for mRNA quantification by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Prominin-1 expression was heterogeneous in different carcinomas but was strikingly hyperexpressed in a tubulolobular variant of breast cancer. The results were confirmed by all three methods. Conclusion Our data, although produced on a limited number of samples, showed an particularly high expression of stem cell marker CD133 in a breast cancer variant, generally with a good prognosis. Since CSCs detection by CD133 has been described as an important prognostic factor for several human cancers, we suggest the importance of detecting stem cell compartiments in all histotypes of breast carcinomas.
