Weekly versus 3-weekly paclitaxel in combination with carboplatin in advanced ovarian cancer: which is the optimal adjuvant chemotherapy regimen?

Matilda X. Lee,David SP Tan 대한부인종양학회 2018 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.29 No.6

The 3-weekly regimen of carboplatin and paclitaxel is the backbone of first line adjuvant chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer. The landmark Japanese Gynaecologic Oncology Group (JGOG) 3016 study demonstrated significant improvements in progression-free survival and overall survival with dose dense weekly administration of paclitaxel in combination with 3-weekly carboplatin. However, efforts to replicate these benefits have failed in subsequent phase III trials. Weekly paclitaxel is purported to have enhanced antitumor activity, with stronger anti-angiogenic effects, and yet is better tolerated. In this review, we explore the rationale for dose dense weekly paclitaxel, and compare the relevant trials as well as quality of life considerations. Possible reasons for the difference in outcomes between the JGOG 3016 and other studies are reviewed, with a focus on how the addition of bevacizumab, the variations between histological and molecular subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancers, and ethnic pharmacogenetic differences may potentially affect the efficacy of dose dense paclitaxel.

        Maria Maximova,Kim Sang-mi,Matilda A. Kruse,Kim Young-hwan,Vasily Maximov 부산대학교 교육연구소 2014 교육혁신연구 Vol.24 No.2

The purpose of this study is to assess the need for APEC Edutainment Exchange Program(AEEP) and current status of educational environment of Sakha in Russia in order to design AEEP with Korea. To this end, based on literature review, this study conducted a field research in Sakha visiting universities, schools, camp sites and various sits for experiential learning for students and did a survey and interviews targeting the local teaches and education experts. The results are as follows. First, having high demand for international educational cooperation activities for students, Sakha, located in the far east of Russia, has attractive and divergent educational resources in the aspect of culture, history, and natural environments. Second, it needs to consider participation costs, matters of interpretation due to language barriers between Korea and Russia, and involvement and support from local Korean residents and related institutions. Third, there should be enough attention and orientation to Korean students so that they can understand and respect the cultural difference of speaking attitude and food in Sakha. These results could provide preliminary data to develop Sakha-Korea AEEP utilizing divergent cultural resources and rich natural environments of Sakha with systemic support for participants.

Neuroimaging Findings in Racemose Neurocysticercosis: Case Description and Literature Review

        Nikoletta Kollia,Aikaterini Theodorou,Paschalis Zervas,Lina Palaiodimou,Matilda Papathanasiou,Panagiotis Toulas,Maria Theodorakopoulou,Georgios Dimopoulos,Drosos Karageorgopoulos,Elisabeth Andreadou,A 대한신경초음파학회 2021 대한신경초음파학회지 (JNN) Vol.13 No.2

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), the most common central nervous system (CNS) parasitic infection among the immunocompetent population can imitate every clinical feature of brain-diseases accurately, drawing attention away from the real culprit and delaying the proper treatment. There are two types of NCC, the parenchymal and the extraparenchymal form. The extraparenchymal NCC include the ventricular cysticercosis, the subarachnoid cysts including giant cysts or racemose cysticercosis with chronic meningitis, the spinal (intra- or extramedullary) cysticercosis and the ophthalmic cysticercosis. It is estimated that about 30% of epilepsy cases in endemic countries are due to NCC and especially the racemose NCC is more aggressive and associated with higher mortality rates. There is a significant heterogeneity in clinical phenotypes, regarding the racemose NCC, which depends on the parasite load and evolutionary stage in association with its location in CNS and the host’s immune response. Crucial for the management of the racemose NCC is the early recognition of the symptoms and the swift initiation of antiparasitic therapy with anti-inflammatory agents in combination with the shunt-insertion in cases of obstructive hydrocephalus. In view of the former considerations we conducted a narrative literature review on racemose NCC and described the diagnostic challenges of a relevant case that we had evaluated in our Department of Neurology.

Comparison of digital and traditional skin wound closure assessment methods in mice

        Coco X. Huang,Elisha Siwan,Sarah L. Fox,Matilda Longfield,Stephen M. Twigg,Danqing Min 한국실험동물학회 2023 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.39 No.4

Background: Chronic skin wounds are a common complication of many diseases such as diabetes. Various traditional methods for assessing skin wound closure are used in animal studies, including wound tracing, calliper measurements and histological analysis. However, these methods have poorly defined wound closure or practical limitations. Digital image analysis of wounds is an increasingly popular, accessible alternative, but it is unclear whether digital assessment is consistent with traditional methods. This study aimed to optimise and compare digital wound closure assessment with traditional methods, using a diabetic mouse model. Diabetes was induced in male C57BL/6J mice by high-fat diet feeding combined with low dose (65 mg/kg of body weight) streptozotocin injections. Mice fed normal chow were included as controls. After 18 weeks, four circular full-thickness dorsal skin wounds of 4 mm diameter were created per mouse. The wounds were photographed and measured by callipers. Wound closure rate (WCR) was digitally assessed by two reporters using two methods: wound outline (WCR-O) and re-epithelialisation (WCR-E). Wounded skin tissues were collected at 10-days post-wounding and wound width was measured from haematoxylin and eosin-stained skin tissue. Results: Between reporters, WCR-O was more consistent than WCR-E, and WCR-O correlated with calliper measurements. Histological analysis supported digital assessments, especially WCR-E, when wounds were histologically closed. Conclusions: WCR-O could replace calliper measurements to measure skin wound closure, but WCR-E assessment requires further refinement. Small animal studies of skin wound healing can greatly benefit from standardised definitions of wound closure and more consistent digital assessment protocols.

      • Non-invasive estimation of relative pressure in turbulent flow using virtual work-energy

        Marlevi, David,Ha, Hojin,Dillon-Murphy, Desmond,Fernandes, Joao F.,Fovargue, Daniel,Colarieti-Tosti, Massimiliano,Larsson, Matilda,Lamata, Pablo,Figueroa, C. Alberto,Ebbers, Tino,Nordsletten, David A. Elsevier 2020 Medical image analysis Vol.60 No.-

Abstract

Vascular pressure differences are established risk markers for a number of cardiovascular diseases. Relative pressures are, however, often driven by turbulence-induced flow fluctuations, where conventional non-invasive methods may yield inaccurate results. Recently, we proposed a novel method for non-turbulent flows, νWERP, utilizing the concept of virtual work-energy to accurately probe relative pressure through complex branching vasculature. Here, we present an extension of this approach for turbulent flows: νWERP-t. We present a theoretical method derivation based on flow covariance, quantifying the impact of flow fluctuations on relative pressure. νWERP-t is tested on a set of in-vitro stenotic flow phantoms with data acquired by 4D flow MRI with six-directional flow encoding, as well as on a patient-specific in-silico model of an acute aortic dissection. Over all tests νWERP-t shows improved accuracy over alternative energy-based approaches, with excellent recovery of estimated relative pressures. In particular, the use of a guaranteed divergence-free virtual field improves accuracy in cases where turbulent flows skew the apparent divergence of the acquired field. With the original νWERP allowing for assessment of relative pressure into previously inaccessible vasculatures, the extended νWERP-t further enlarges the method's clinical scope, underlining its potential as a novel tool for assessing relative pressure in-vivo.

Highlights

vWERP-t uses virtual work-energy to accurately assess turbulent relative pressure.

In-vitro, vWERP-t shows 1:1 agreement with invasive measurements of relative pressure.

In transient flow, vWERP-t shows significant improvement compared to other approaches.

vWERP-t guarantees divergence free flow even in turbulent fields, improving accuracy.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
