Purpose: To characterize the relationship between serum estradiol levels and the expression of glucose transporter type 4 (Glut4) in the pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles in female rats. Methods: The muscles were excised from virgin rats during the metestrus and proestrus stages of the estrous cycle, and from sham and ovariectomized rats implanted with empty or estradiol benzoate–filled capsules. The expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) was inspected in the muscles at metestrus and proestrus. Relative Glut4 expression, glycogen content, and serum glucose levels were measured. Appropriate statistical tests were done to identify significant differences (P≤0.05). Results: The pubococcygeus and iliococcygeus muscles expressed ERα and ERβ. Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle were higher at proestrus than at metestrus. No significant changes were observed in the iliococcygeus muscle. In ovariectomized rats, the administration of estradiol benzoate increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle alone. Conclusions: High serum estradiol levels increased Glut4 expression and glycogen content in the pubococcygeus muscle, but not in the iliococcygeus muscle.

Bismuth tungstate Bi2W2O9 has been synthesized using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (H5DTPA), an organic chelating agent of metals in an aqueous solution. The formation of the oxide was followed through characterization techniques such as XRD, TGA/DTA, and SEM. The optimum temperature to decompose the organic matrix and to form Bi2W2O9 was determined to be around 720 oC. Below this temperature, Bi2W2O9 was formed with a high content of Bi2WO6. At 720 oC particles of the Bi2W2O9 with a surface area four times higher than that obtained by a solid-state reaction were obtained. The oxide was tested as a photocatalyst on the degradation of aqueous solutions of rhodamine B under VIS radiation. The photodegradation of the dye followed a kinetic first order with an apparent constant, k = 2.8 × 10−3 minute−1and t1/2= 247 minutes for an aqueous solution of 5 mg l−1 of rhodamine B. The presence of Burkholderia, Cupriavidus, and Ralstonia species in northeastern Mexico was investigated. An analysis of the root surrounding soil from different agricultural plants led to the isolation of Burkholderia and Cupriavidus species but no Ralstonia strains. Most Cupriavidus species were unknown and grouped into two clusters according to ARDRA profiles. The 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that the Cupriavidus isolates were highly related among them and with different Cupriavidus species with validated names. However, SDS-PAGE profiles were distinct among the different ARDRA profiles and to other Cupriavidus species examined, suggesting new species in the genus. This shows that Cupriavidus is more widely associated with plants than previously appreciated. The BCC isolate was 99% similar to B. cenocepacia by recA sequence analysis. Additionally, most Cupriavidus strains from the two largest groups grew on media containing up to 0.1 mg/ml of copper, 10.0 mg/ml arsenic and 1.0 mg/ml zinc. Burkholderia strains grew on media containing up to 10.0 mg/ml zinc, 5.0 mg/ml arsenic and 0.1 mg/ml copper.

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia is rarely associated with previous traumatic injury. We present a case of a 28-year-old male with progressive digit ulcers, a weak pulse, cyanosis, and a cold limb. Eight months prior, he had a motorcycle accident resulting in a right clavicle fracture and brachial plexus injury. Computed tomography angiography revealed occlusion of the right subclavian artery near a surgically implanted reduction plate. The patient underwent an open subclavianbrachial bypass with a reversed saphenous vein graft. His postoperative recovery was uneventful. After 3 months, he had a euthermic right hand with a palpable pulse and his ulcers had completely healed. This case reinforces the need for patients with a neurological deficit in the upper extremity caused by blunt trauma to undergo thorough vascular examination to identify potential arterial injury and compromised perfusion.

This paper analyses the performance levels of the leading compa- nies in the fast fashion sector, Inditex, H&M and Gap in the period 2005–2019. Additionally, the isolated analysis of Inditex, as a case study, has been considered, with special emphasis on its interna- tionalization process, in the period 1995–2019. The use of different approaches to obtain efficiency and productivity (DEA, intertem- poral and Windows models), have enriched this work. The results obtained indicate a good performance in the resource manage- ment of the companies analyzed. In the case of Inditex, a curvilinear U-shaped relationship was found between efficiency and its level of internationalization. In addition, average increases in TFP are observed in the case of Gap and Inditex. However, Inditex shows a trend of continuous improvement in most of the sub-periods considered, reaching an improvement of 18%.

Study Design: Prospective case series study. Purpose: Description of the outcome of stand-alone cervical cages for single and multilevel cervical degenerative spine disease. Overview of Literature: The aim of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cervical spine disease is to improve patient symptoms and spine stability and restore lordosis. Locking stand-alone cages were developed with the goal of minimizing soft tissue disruption anterior to the vertebrae and reducing the profile of the construct by avoiding an anterior plate, thereby maximizing ACDF benefits. Methods: This study comprises a case series of patients surgically treated between July 2015 and February 2018 who received single or multilevel ACDF with a zero-profile stand-alone cervical cage. Surgical and clinical preoperative evaluation and surgical outcomes were evaluated using pre- and postoperative Nurick, Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score for myelopathy scales, cervical Cobb angles, postoperative surgical complications, and fusion and subsidence rates. Results: Fifty-three patients underwent ACDF; the mean age of these patients was 58.8 years, and their preoperative VAS, NDI, and JOA scores were 8.1, 31.6, and 15.3, respectively. The preoperative Cobb angle was 30.7°. Forty-five percent of patients had one-level, 54.7% had two-level, and 13.2% had three-level procedures. On preoperative magnetic resonance imaging, foraminal stenosis was present in 94.3% of patients, whereas medullar stenosis was present in 41.5%. The rate of complications was 5.7%: two patients had postoperative dysphagia (3.7%), and one patient had a surgical site hematoma. Mean postoperative follow-up time was 6.7 months; postoperative VAS, NDI, and JOA scores were 2.4, 15.9, and 15.8, respectively. Postoperative Cobb angle was 35.9°, fusion rate was 84.9%, and subsidence rate was 11.3%. Conclusions: ACDF with zero-profile stand-alone cervical devices is an excellent option for cervical degenerative disc disease of one, two, and three levels, with similar results reported when using ACDF with either cage or plate.

The pozzolanic materials have the capacity to modify the performance of Portland cement (PC) mortars. When they are used as supplementary materials, the physical-chemical properties such as compressive-strength and resistance to aggressive environments (chloride, sulphate, acids) are improved. In this article, a study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the addition of two natural pozzolans: volcanic pumice and zeolite. Both used as substitutes for PC in mortars based on cement, considering mechanical strength and the aggressive effect of sulphate ions. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the steel rebar embedded in these mortars was studied during 730 days of exposition to aggressive conditions. The results revealed that the development of the compressive strength of mortars with pozzolans added reached similar values to the reference mortar. It was possible to observe that the addition of the pozzolan suppresses the ettringite formation proportionally to the pozzolan content. The corrosion resistance of the steel improves with the addition of pozzolans after 730 days of exposition at sulphate environment. The results of this study revealed the feasibility to use natural pozzolan as an additive during the preparation of cement up to 25% without significant changes of the physical-chemical properties of the mortars.
Molybdenum release from high burnup spent nuclear fuel at alkaline and hyperalkaline pH
García-Gómez Sonia,Giménez Javier,Casas Ignasi,Llorca Jordi,De Pablo Joan,Martínez-Torrents Albert,Clarens Frederic,Kokinda Jakub,Iglesias Luis,Serrano-Purroy Daniel 한국원자력학회 2024 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.56 No.1
This work presents experimental data and modelling of the release of Mo from high-burnup spent nuclear fuel (63 MWd/kgU) at two different pH values, 8.4 and 13.2 in air. The release of Mo from SF to the solution is around two orders of magnitude higher at pH = 13.2 than at pH = 8.4. The high Mo release at high pH would indicate that Mo would not be congruently released with uranium and would have an important contribution to the Instant Release Fraction, with a value of 5.3%. Parallel experiments with pure non irradiated Mo(s) and XPS determinations indicated that the faster dissolution at pH = 13.2 could be the consequence of the higher releases from metallic Mo in the fuel through a surface complexation mechanism promoted by the OH and the oxidation of the metal to Mo(VI) via the formation of intermediate Mo(IV) and Mo(V) species.
