Westerdykella reniformis: A New Record from Field Soils in Korea

During a survey of fungal diversity in different provinces of South Korea in 2017, a new fungal isolate was discovered. This fungal isolate was identified as Westerdykella reniformis, based on its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S ribosomal DNA (28S rDNA) sequence data. To our knowledge, W. reniformis has not previously been reported in South Korea. Thus, in this study, we report a new record of a species from the Dothideomycetes class in Korea, and provide a detailed description with morphological illustrations.

Ubiquinone-10 (CoQ10), a vitamin-like lipophilic component of the membrane-bound electron transport system, has a wide range of therapeutic, neutraceutical, and cosmeceutical applications. The objective of this study was to optimize nutritional requirements for production of CoQ10by Paracoccus dinitrificans NRRL B-3785 fermentation. Effect of type and concentration of carbon and nitrogen source on fermentation kinetic parameters were analyzed using logistic and Luedeking-Piret equations. In submerged batch fermentation, yield of CoQ10 was 12.22 mg/L when 40 g/L glycerol was used and specific growth rate (0.056/h) as well as growth associated constant (α=0.680 mg/g)were higher as compared to other concentrations. Ammonium nitrate and proteose peptone at 5 (α=0.677 mg/g; β=0.0072 mg/g·h) and 20 g/L (α=0.806 mg/g; β=0.0074 mg/g·h), respectively, were optimal for CoQ10 production. CoQ10 formation observed to be both growth and nongrowth associated. In optimized medium CoQ10 formation increased considerably from 1.91 to 14.12 mg/L.
Two New Records of Ascomycetes from Crop Field Soils in Korea

In the ongoing survey of fungal diversity in Korea, two Ascomycetes species, namely Rhinocladiella similis and Toxicocladosporium irritans, were isolated in 2016. These species were identified based on the internal transcribed spacer region and morphological characteristics. This is the first report of these species in Korea, and the morphological characteristics and images of the fungi are presented.

Background and Purpose Thrombolysis >4.5 hours after ischemic stroke onset is unproven. We assessed the feasibility of tenecteplase (TNK) treatment in patients with evidence of an ischemic penumbra 4.5 to 24 hours after onset. Methods Acute ischemic stroke patients underwent perfusion computed tomography (CT)/ magnetic resonance imaging. Patients with cerebral blood volume (CBV) or diffusion weighted imaging Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Scores (ASPECTS) >6 and mismatch score >2 (defined as >2 ASPECTS regions with delay on mean transit time maps and normal CBV) were eligible for treatment with TNK (0.25 mg/kg). Patients with mismatch patterns enrolled in non-endovascular/ non-thrombolysis trials and those without mismatch patterns served as comparators. Results The median (interquartile range) baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) in TNK treated patients (n=16) was 12 (range, 8 to 15). In the untreated mismatch (n=18) and nonmismatch (n=23) groups, the baseline NIHSS was 12 (range, 7 to 12) and 16 (range, 8 to 20; P=0.09) respectively. There was one symptomatic hemorrhage each in the TNK group (parenchymal hematoma [PH] 2) and non-mismatch group (PH 2). Penumbral salvage volumes were higher in TNK treated patients (48.3 mL [range, 24.9 to 80.4]) than the non-mismatch (–90.8 mL [range, –197 to –20]; P<0.0001) patients. Conclusions This prospective, non-randomized study supports the feasibility of TNK therapy in patients with evidence of ischemic penumbra 4 to 24 hours after onset.
A New Record of Nannizziopsis mirabilis from Field Soil in Korea

Nannizziopsis mirabilis (KNU17-67) was isolated from a field soil sample collected from Jejudo in 2017. This fungal isolate was identified and described by its morphological characters and the internal transcribed spacer rDNA gene sequencing. Potato dextrose agar medium was used to study its macro and micromorphology. In addition, a molecular phylogenetic tree was constructed for its precise confirmation as N. mirabilis . This fungal isolate has not officially been reported previously in Korea.

Thermoelectric generator (TEG) is a promising option in waste heat recovery with various advantages including nonmoving components, very low operating noise and overall high stability. However, low power generation efficiency of TEGs is still concerned for application in wider fields. The objective of the present study is to investigate the parameters affecting the performance and efficiency of segmented TEG. The physical parameters including length ratio, length-to-area ratio and thickness of conducting plate were considered. In addition, the effect of varying hot side temperature was analyzed. Performance of segmented TEG was compared based on the power generation and conversion efficiency. The results of the investigation showed that increasing Bi2Te3 length in the segmented TEG made up of Bi2Te3 and SiGe increased the maximum power generation and efficiency. As length-to-area ratio increased, the power generation decreased, however, efficiency increased slightly. In addition, as the hot side temperature increased from 150 ∘ ∘C to 650 ∘ ∘C, the power generation and efficiency both increased. Power generation and efficiency of segmented TEG increased when the conducting plate thickness was increased. The power generation and efficiency were 39.2% and 51.9% higher for TEG with asymmetrical element than TEG with symmetrical element showing that asymmetrical element would be better option for same thermoelectric element volume.
M5 Model Tree for Pier Scour Prediction Using Field Dataset

This paper investigates the potential of M5 model tree, a tree based regression approach to predict the local scour around bridge piers using field dataset. The dataset consisting of 232 pier scour measurements were used. Out of the total dataset, 154measurements were used to train M5 model tree and the remaining 78 to test the trained model. Comparison of results with four predictive equations suggests an improved performance by M5 model tree in predicting the pier scour depth with dimensioned data and found it performing equally well to a back propagation neural network. A sensitivity analysis with field dataset indicates that the pier width, depth and flow velocity are important factors in predicting the scour depth with M5 model tree. Furthermore, M5 model tree based regression approach provides a linear regression function that can be used by field engineers to predict the pier scour.
Role of Intestinal Microbiota in Metabolism of Voglibose In Vitro and In Vivo

Background Voglibose, an α-glucosidase inhibitor, inhibits breakdown of complex carbohydrates into simple sugar units in intestine. Studies showed that voglibose metabolism in the liver might be negligible due to its poor intestinal absorption. Numerous microorganisms live in intestine and have several roles in metabolism and detoxification of various xenobiotics. Due to the limited information, the possible metabolism of voglibose by intestinal microbiota was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Methods For the in vitro study, different concentrations of voglibose were incubated with intestinal contents, prepared from both vehicle- and antibiotics-treated mice, to determine the decreased amount of voglibose over time by using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Similarly, in vivo pharmacodynamic effect of voglibose was determined following the administration of voglibose and starch in vehicle- and antibiotic-pretreated non-diabetic and diabetic mice, by measuring the modulatory effects of voglibose on blood glucose levels. Results The in vitro results indicated that the remaining voglibose could be significantly decreased when incubated with the intestinal contents from normal mice compared to those from antibiotic-treated mice, which had less enzyme activities. The in vivo results showed that the antibiotic pretreatment resulted in reduced metabolism of voglibose. This significantly lowered blood glucose levels in antibiotic-pretreated mice compared to the control animals. Conclusion The present results indicate that voglibose would be metabolized by the intestinal microbiota, and that this metabolism might be pharmacodynamically critical in lowering blood glucose levels in mice.
