Representation of Princely Power: the Case of the Flemish Comital Dynasty in the 11th Century
Masumi UEYAMA 한국서양중세사학회 2024 西洋中世史硏究 Vol.0 No.53
In French historiography, the 11th and 12th centuries are often portrayed as “the age of princes”. While the Capetian kings controlled only a very narrow territory surrounding Paris, many princes, namely dukes and counts, inheriting vast territories, were essentially independent from royal control. However, due to the scarcity of primary sources, the research of princely powers has not so been in the focus of historical studies. This paper examines the princely power in the 11th Century, zooming into the role of ‘rituals’ or ‘ceremonies’ : specially the dedication ceremony of Hasnon monastery, which was held by the Flemish Comital dynasty in 1070. Baldwin of Mons, Count of Flanders, who organised this dedication ceremony, also inherited the countship of Hainaut through his wife, and the Hasnon monastery was located at the boundary area between the counties of Flanders and Hainaut, that is, his old and new territories. He collected here a total of 26 relics for the dedication, almost half from each of the two counties, and opened this ceremony not only to the clergy and noble, but also to the people. By bringing together so many relics from all over its territories, the Flemish comital dynasty manifested the unification of two counties, and aimed at impressing visually its power to divers attendants.
Mallard Detection using Microphone Array and Delay-and-Sum Beamforming

This paper presents a method of estimating the direction and position of mallards from voice information using arrayed microphones combined with delay-and-sum beamforming. Rice farming using mallards saves labor because mallards work instead of farmers. Nevertheless, the number of mallards declines when they are preyed upon by natural enemies such as crows, kites, and weasels. We consider that efficient management can be achieved from locating and identifying the locations of mallards and natural enemies using voice information that can be widely sensed in a paddy field. For this study, we developed a prototype system with 32 microphones installed as an array installed on our originally designed and assembled mount. We obtained benchmark sound datasets in an outdoor environment that comprises 18 grid points of 40 m width and 30 m depth. For direction estimation, no detection angle error occurred at 9 points. Estimation errors were increased at sharp-angle positions from the microphone array. For position estimation, our method correctly estimated 8 points.

Some fire-retardant woods with no documented fire performance have occasionally been sold in the market. It is important to know whether the required amount of chemical fire retardant is present in all sections of a wood sample. In this study, nondestructive measurement of chemical retention in fire-retardant treated wood was experimentally investigated using air-coupled ultrasonic and micro focus X-ray computed tomography. Wood samples were impregnated with different chemical concentrations. First, the ultrasonic wave velocities of wood samples were measured before and after impregnation. The percent changes in velocity exhibited a positive correlation with the chemical retention. Second, the images of wood sample were captured using X-ray CT before and after impregnation. The changes in integrated brightness values calculated from the captured images also showed a positive correlation with the chemical retention at a 1% significance level. These findings suggest that it is possible to evaluate the distributions of chemical retention in fire-retardant wood.
Study on Forward Collision Warning System Adapted to Driver Characteristics and Road Environment
Masumi Nakaoka,Pongsathorn Raksincharoensak,Masao Nagai 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
Forward collision warning systems target a major crash type: rear-end crashes with a moving or parked vehicle which covers 30% of all accidents in Japan. The development of this system contributes to the reduction of road accidents. Many collision warning algorithms have recently been proposed and developed in automobile markets but they are based on Pre-Crash Safety system concept which activates in critical driving situation. In future, the collision warning device should be designed to be activated earlier than the current pre-crash safety system in order to induce driver’s own braking maneuver to prevent collision as well as near-miss incident. This paper focuses on a forward collision warning algorithm based on road friction coefficient and driver characteristics. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by using driving simulator experiments and experimental car in urban area.
The study on distribution of estrogen and progesteron receptors in the scalp tissue

For the purpose of observing distribution of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the scalp tissue, the authors had biopsy of dermal tissue from each scalp region of 5 men and women individually according to their age, and then extracted estrogen and progesterone receptors in the protoplasm and measured them by the radioisotope method. In consequence, we noticed that a comperatively small amount of these receptors exist in the scalp irrespective of age of them.
