Evaluation of the zoonotic potential of a novel reassortant H1N2 swine influenza virus with gene constellation derived from multiple viral sources

        Lee, J.H.,Pascua, P.N.Q.,Decano, A.G.,Kim, S.M.,Park, S.J.,Kwon, H.I.,Kim, E.H.,Kim, Y.I.,Kim, H.,Kim, S.Y.,Song, M.S.,Jang, H.K.,Park, B.K.,Choi, Y.K. Elsevier Science 2015 INFECTION GENETICS AND EVOLUTION Vol.34 No.-

In 2011-2012, contemporary North American-like H3N2 swine influenza viruses (SIVs) possessing the 2009 pandemic H1N1 matrix gene (H3N2pM-like virus) were detected in domestic pigs of South Korea where H1N2 SIV strains are endemic. More recently, we isolated novel reassortant H1N2 SIVs bearing the Eurasian avian-like swine H1-like hemagglutinin and Korean swine H1N2-like neuraminidase in the internal gene backbone of the H3N2pM-like virus. In the present study, we clearly provide evidence on the genetic origins of the novel H1N2 SIVs virus through genetic and phylogenetic analyses. In vitro studies demonstrated that, in comparison with a pre-existing 2012 Korean H1N2 SIV [A/swine/Korea/CY03-1½012 (CY03-1½012)], the 2013 novel reassortant H1N2 isolate [A/swine/Korea/CY0423/2013 (CY0423-12/2013)] replicated more efficiently in differentiated primary human bronchial epithelial cells. The CY0423-12/2013 virus induced higher viral titers than the CY03-1½012 virus in the lungs and nasal turbinates of infected mice and nasal wash samples of ferrets. Moreover, the 2013 H1N2 reassortant, but not the intact 2012 H1N2 virus, was transmissible to naive contact ferrets via respiratory-droplets. Noting that the viral precursors have the ability to infect humans, our findings highlight the potential threat of a novel reassortant H1N2 SIV to public health and underscore the need to further strengthen influenza surveillance strategies worldwide, including swine populations.

      • Measurement of the top quark mass in the dileptonic tt¯ decay channel using the mass observables Mbℓ , MT2 , and Mbℓν in pp collisions at s=8 TeV

        Sirunyan, A. M.,Tumasyan, A.,Adam, W.,Asilar, E.,Bergauer, T.,Brandstetter, J.,Brondolin, E.,Dragicevic, M.,Erö,, J.,Flechl, M.,Friedl, M.,Frü,hwirth, R.,Ghete, V. M.,Hartl, C.,Hö,rmann, N American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review D Vol.96 No.3

<P>A measurement of the top quark mass (M-t) in the dileptonic t (t) over bar decay channel is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data was recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 +/- 0.5 fb(-1). Events are selected with two oppositely charged leptons (l = e, mu) and two jets identified as originating from b quarks. The analysis is based on three kinematic observables whose distributions are sensitive to the value of Mt. An invariant mass observable, M-bl, and a 'stransverse mass' observable, M-T2, are employed in a simultaneous fit to determine the value of M-t and an overall jet energy scale factor (JSF). A complementary approach is used to construct an invariant mass observable, M-blv, that is combined with M-T2 to measure M-t. The shapes of the observables, along with their evolutions in M-t and JSF, are modeled by a nonparametric Gaussian process regression technique. The sensitivity of the observables to the value of M-t is investigated using a Fisher information density method. The top quark mass is measured to be 172.22 +/- 0.18(stat)(-0.93)(+0.89) (syst) GeV.</P>

Pharmacokinetics and milk distribution characteristics of orbifloxacin following intravenous and intramuscular injection in lactating ewes

        GOUDAH, A.,CHO, H.-J.,SHIN, H.-C.,SHIM, J.-H.,REGMI, N. L.,SHIMODA, M.,ABD EL-ATY, A. M. Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2009 JOURNAL OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTIC Vol.32 No.4

<P>The purpose of the current investigation is to elucidate the pharmacokinetic profiles of orbifloxacin (OBFX) in lactating ewes (<I>n </I>= 6) following intravenous (i.v.) and intramuscular (i.m.) administrations of 2.5 mg/kg W. In a crossover study, frequent blood, milk, and urine samples were drawn for up to 48 h after the end of administration, and were then assayed to determine their respective drug concentrations through microbiological assay using <I>Klebsiella pneumoniae</I> as the test micro-organism. Plasma pharmacokinetic parameters were derived from plasma concentration–time data using a compartmental and noncompartmental analysis, and validated a relatively rapid elimination from the blood compartment, with a slope of the terminal phase of 0.21 ± 0.02 and 0.19 ± 0.06 per hour and a half-life of 3.16 ± 0.43 and 3.84 ± 0.59 h, for i.v. and i.m. dosing, respectively. OBFX was widely distributed with a volume of distribution <I>V</I>(d(ss)) of 1.31 ± 0.12 L/kg, as suggested by the low percentage of protein binding (22.5%). The systemic body clearance (<I>Cl</I>B) was 0.32 ± 0.12 L/h·kg. Following i.m. administration, the maximum plasma concentration (<I>C</I>max) of 1.53 ± 0.34 &mgr;g/mL was reached at <I>t</I>max 1.25 ± 0.21 h. The drug was completely absorbed after i.m. administration, with a bioavailability of 114.63 ± 11.39%. The kinetic milk <I>AUC</I>milk/<I>AUC</I>plasma ratio indicated a wide penetration of orbifloxacin from the bloodstream to the mammary gland. OBFX urine concentrations were higher than the concurrent plasma concentrations, and were detected up to 30 h postinjection by both routes. Taken together, these findings indicate that systemic administration of orbifloxacin could be efficacious against susceptible mammary and urinary pathogens in lactating ewes.</P>

Measurement of the higher-order anisotropic flow coefficients for identified hadrons in Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

        Adare, A.,Afanasiev, S.,Aidala, C.,Ajitanand, N. N.,Akiba, Y.,Al-Bataineh, H.,Alexander, J.,Aoki, K.,Aramaki, Y.,Atomssa, E. T.,Averbeck, R.,Awes, T. C.,Azmoun, B.,Babintsev, V.,Bai, M.,Baksay, G.,Bak American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review C Vol.93 No.5

<P>Measurements of the anisotropic flow coefficients v(2){Psi(2)}, v(3){Psi(3)}, v(4){Psi(4)}, and v(4){Psi(2)} for identified particles (pi(+/-), K-+/-, and p + (p) over bar) at midrapidity, obtained relative to the event planes Psi(m) at forward rapidities in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV, are presented as a function of collision centrality and particle transverse momenta p(T). The v(n) coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic n, a modified valence quark-number N-q scaling [plotting v(n){Psi(m)}/(N-q)(n/2) versus transverse kinetic energies (KET)/N-q] is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of KET. A simultaneous blast-wave model fit to the observed v(n){Psi(m)}(p(T)) coefficients and published particle spectra identifies radial flow anisotropies rho(n){Psi(m)} and spatial eccentricities s(n){Psi(m)} at freeze-out. These are generally smaller than the initial-state participant-plane geometric eccentricities epsilon(n){Psi(PP)(m)} as also observed in the final eccentricity from quantum interferometry measurements with respect to the event plane.</P>

A C1 inhibitor ortholog from rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus): Molecular perspectives of a central regulator in terms of its genomic arrangement, transcriptional profiles and anti-protease activities of recombinant peptide

        Umasuthan, N.,Bathige, S.D.N.K.,Revathy, K.S.,Wickramaarachchi, W.D.N.,Wan, Q.,Whang, I.,Kim, E.,Park, M.A.,Park, H.C.,Lee, J. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science 2014 DEVELOPMENTAL AND COMPARATIVE IMMUNOLOGY Vol.42 No.2

C1 inhibitor (C1Inh), a member of serpin superfamily, is a crucial regulator of the activation of various plasmatic cascades associated with immunity and inflammation. This study describes the identification and characterization of a C1Inh gene from rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus (OfC1Inh) at structural, expressional and functional levels. The cDNA-(2245bp) and corresponding gDNA-sequences (5.2kbp) of OfC1Inh were isolated from rock bream transcriptome- and BAC-libraries, respectively. Predicted amino acid sequence of OfC1Inh revealed a two-domain architecture composed of an N-terminal region with two Ig-like domains and a C-terminal region with a serpin domain. Tertiary model of OfC1Inh disclosed its active site topology. In the multi-exonic genomic arrangement of OfC1Inh, it consisted of eleven exons disjoined by ten introns as observed in few other fish homologs. Our comparative analysis indicated that the teleostean C1Inhs were distinct from their non-teleostean vertebrate counterparts in terms of their (1) extended N-terminal domains, (2) evolutionary divergence and (3) exon-intron distribution. The OfC1Inh had a TATA-deficient promoter with a putative initiator element, and two tandemly arranged downstream promoter elements. Several components associated with the immune and inflammatory transcriptional activation were also predicted to exist in 5' flanking region of OfC1Inh. The exclusive mRNA levels in liver and moderate levels in extra-hepatic tissues intimated the diversified importance of OfC1Inh in rock bream physiology. We also provide an evidence for the involvement of OfC1Inh in immune balance, based on its modulated transcription upon different PAMP (lipopolysaccharide and poly I:C)- or pathogen (Streptococcus iniae and rock bream irido virus)-challenges. A recombinantly expressed fusion protein [(r)OfC1Inh] was employed in demonstrating the anti-protease function of OfC1Inh. The (r)OfC1Inh exhibited detectable inhibitory activity against C1 esterase and thrombin, where the anti-C1 esterase role was shown to be potentiated by heparin. Taken together, the results of this study provide the first line of evidence for the possible involvement of a teleostean C1Inh in fish immunity, based on its expressional response(s) and inhibitory properties against two enzymes involved in biological cascades.

Measurement of the triple-differential dijet cross section in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=8\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 8 TeV and constraints on parton distribution functions

        Sirunyan, A. M.,Tumasyan, A.,Adam, W.,Asilar, E.,Bergauer, T.,Brandstetter, J.,Brondolin, E.,Dragicevic, M.,Erö,, J.,Flechl, M.,Friedl, M.,Frü,hwirth, R.,Ghete, V. M.,Hartl, C.,Hö,rmann, N Springer 2017 European Physical Journal C Vol.77 No.11

<P>A measurement is presented of the triple-differential dijet cross section at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV using 19.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of the average transverse momentum, half the rapidity separation, and the boost of the two leading jets in the event. The cross section is corrected for detector effects and compared to calculations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order accuracy, complemented with electroweak and nonperturbative corrections. New constraints on parton distribution functions are obtained and the inferred value of the strong coupling constant is alpha(S)(M-Z) = 0.1199 +/- 0.0015 (exp)(-0.0020)(+0.0031) (theo), where M-Z is the mass of the Z boson.</P>

Vol.- No.49

Purpose: This study identifies the factors in nursing undergraduate curriculum related to improved information literacy, and the degree of relationship between information literacy and self-leadership among nursing undergraduate students. Method: Participants were 338 nursing undergraduates selected by convenience sampling at 19 Korean universities. Instruments were the self-leadership tool by Manz(1983), modified by Cho(2003) and the information literacy tool developed by Rhee(2008). The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchial multiple regression analysis with SPSS 22.0 Windows software. Results: Participants’ age(F=2.962, p<.001), grade(F=5.757, p=.001), experience in clinical nursing-practice(t=3.792, p<.001), GPA(F=3.373, p=.019) and experience in informatics education (t=3.291, p<.001) were statistically significant differences in the information literacy. Age(F=4.995, p=.007), Religion (t=3.593, p<.001), GPA (F=8.878, p<.001), satisfaction with the major subject (t=-4.399, p<.001) and the degree of information education necessity(t=1.993, p=.047) showed statistically significant differences in the self-leadership. Also there was a strong correlation between information literacy and self-leadership (Pearson’s r=.578, p<.001). Hierarchical-regression analysis revealed that the better self-leadership was associated with the higher information literacy(Adjusted R²=.355, R²=.382, p<.001). However, age, time using a computer, grade, religion, GPA, satisfaction with nursing as a major, and experience in informatics education were not significantly associated with information literacy. Conclusion: These findings implied the importance of educating information literacy which is a foundation for evidence-based-practice for nursing students. Considering the importance of self-leadership on information literacy, it is also essential to develop the current nursing undergraduate curriculum for maximizing the effectiveness of information literacy education reflecting the relationship between self-leadership and information literacy.

      • Search for third-generation scalar leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos in final states with two tau leptons and two jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV

        Sirunyan, A. M.,Tumasyan, A.,Adam, W.,Asilar, E.,Bergauer, T.,Brandstetter, J.,Brondolin, E.,Dragicevic, M.,Erö,, J.,Flechl, M.,Friedl, M.,Frü,hwirth, R.,Ghete, V. M.,Hartl, C.,Hö,rmann, N Springer-Verlag 2017 Journal of high energy physics Vol.2017 No.7

<P>A search is performed for third-generation scalar leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos in events containing one electron or muon, one hadronically decaying tau lepton, and at least two jets, using a root s = 13 TeV pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12: 9 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016. The number of observed events is found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. A limit is set at 95% confidence level on the product of the leptoquark pair production cross section and beta(2), where beta is the branching fraction of leptoquark decay to a tau lepton and a bottom quark. Assuming beta = 1, third-generation leptoquarks with masses below 850 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. An additional search based on the same event topology involves heavy right-handed neutrinos, N-R, and right-handed W bosons, W-R, arising in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. In this search, W-R bosons are assumed to decay to a tau lepton and N-R followed by the decay of the N-R to a tau lepton and an off-shell W-R boson. Assuming the mass of the right-handed neutrino to be half of the mass of the right-handed W boson, W-R boson masses below 2.9 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. These results improve on the limits from previous searches for third-generation leptoquarks and heavy right-handed neutrinos with tau leptons in the final state.</P>

      • Search for a standard-model-like Higgs boson with a mass in the range 145 to 1000 GeV at the LHC

<P>A search for a standard-model-like Higgs boson in the H→WW and H→ZZ decay channels is reported, for Higgs boson masses in the range 145<<I>m</I>H<1000 GeV. The search is based upon proton–proton collision data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 fb−1 at [FORMULA OMISSION] and up to 5.3 fb−1 at [FORMULA OMISSION], recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The combined upper limits at 95 % confidence level on products of the cross section and branching fractions exclude a standard-model-like Higgs boson in the range 145<<I>m</I>H<710 GeV, thus extending the mass region excluded by CMS from 127–600 GeV up to 710 GeV.</P>
