It is important to suppress fire at the early stage of its occurrence to prevent it from spreading further. In this regard, SOLAS stipulates many regulations. One of these regulations is a requirement that the control equipment for fire fighting system such as a control cabinet for local fire extinguishing system should be located at a position safe from the fire and at a controllable position in case of local fire. However, there is no interpretation on such safe places and consequently, many designers are applying their own set of requirement causing much confusion. This paper suggests the interpretation on the safe position for the fire safety equipment in case of local fire in the engine room.

For tankers carrying liquid cargoes having a flash point below 60℃, additional requirements are stipulated in the SOLAS - i.e., control requirements for oxygen, flammable liquid and ignition sources. The cargo pump room of such tanker is regarded as the most dangerous space because such space is frequented by cargo operators and may contain flammable gas. One of the requirements for cargo pump room is a installation of continuous gas monitoring system. This paper suggest a suitable position for sampling points of continuous gas monitoring system based on the actual test and simulation.
